This one panel format is actually common in the West too, the Japanese call them "American Jokes". However, it is often used for absurdism and gags and not to tell much of a story like you can if you are clever with a panel. It is important when making a comic to consider the pacing, and just like every artform, use what you need and give everything value. This is a bit long but the topic interests me. Probably part of why comics didn't take off in the West like they did in Japan even in countries that are less dismissive of them like France.

Japan was on topic because it was comparing western comics to the factually much bigger manga industry. I too hate when people unecessary Japanese terms for things we have words for when they aren't talking about a Japanese perspective on something, it is why I actually deliberately used the term comics throughout instead of acting like manga is anything other than Japanese comics. I can see your point about how it could be longer as an audience can easily get distracted. This is probably the reason why one panel comics aren't actually too common outside gags that don't require understanding to enjoy.
