there are, they're just all shovelware shit because it still takes ~hundreds of hours of human work to make an actually good game. Think of it like having infinite junior devs and interns, the part of gamedev where you actually type code is basically entirely automated but that was only ever ~50% of the job at most anyway and generally not the part of the project that determines whether a game is good or not.

>>748996794
2 years ago people were saying "In 2 years AI will be good enough to make simple games entirely on its own" and there were jokes about "just 2 more weeks, 2 more weks", now 2 years later it is and there's a tidal wave of slop and those same people won't stop crying about it, but in the same breath still make the same "2 more weeks, just 2 more weeks" jokes when people say "In 2 years AI will be good enough to make big complex games entirely on its own"

It already can and always could. The issue is that it needs to have a source code of already made games. If you want to create something unique it won't be able to. The same way Suno AI can't make new genres of music or AI art needs you to list artists. It's all derivative.

The best indie devs are the ones that are fucked in the head and have weird ass ideas, they don't benefit much from that.

>>
>>748996682
because game development is actually about sitting down and deciding how 10,000 little parts should work.
even with AI wiriting the code most people are too lazy to do this.
I use AI for development but most of my time is spent talking through with colleagues how things should work and what mechanics should be while the AI sits there.

Even if AI was perfect at making games it can't read your mind, so if you say "Hey Claude make me a game" it will make a bunch of decisions that you wouldn't have made.
to actually make a good game someone has to spend a lot of time in a text file and spreadsheet planning.

the only reason this is a problem at all is because games journalism is a smoking crater of identity politics and fag pandering socialists try to min/max their bachelors in general studies. if there were gamers out there sorting through the shitpile to give us the goods we want it would be a lot easier; this is not the case and any independent games journalist just becomes a politically motivated grifter serving up slop for ad revenue, a corporation plant and in some cases both.

>>
>>748997519
yeah, I can say something like "we need to add support for this new mechanic"
and AI will go "oh we can just stick yet another field on this class to hold that state"
but I, a developer, know that repeatedly adding arbitrary state to this class is retarded and will make everything harder forever, so I say "no we need to think about this in regards to hundreds of new mechanics we're gonna eventually add" and I basically have to spell out to it we need a more robust solution.

I was talking to someone on HN about this who works in some AI company, but it's something to do with the training in that it's a preference for changing less code, they were trained to make surgical changes because people were getting mad they were re-writing whole sections of codebase for no reason.
>>
>>748997820
okay but if you can make anything why would you make a generic golf videogame and not something more interesting to showcase what the AI can actually do?
>>
>>748997763
tbf speedrunning is just a really monotonous tedious task of repetition in a closed environment, AI should excel at this. A custom RL model could probably process game states fast enough that it wouldn't even have to go frame by frame
Speedrunning is exactly the kind of soul sucking monotonous labor that AI ought to be freeing mankind from.

The only "jaw dropping" stuff that AI helped me for was when I had made a lot of shaders and VFX in AE and I wanted AI to remake them in Unity as shaders. It did it not perfectly but 80-90% fidelity, took 3 tries, cost like 15 bucks.

You're asking the wrong questions anon. Humans can also make anything, yet we also tend to make generic video games. See: sonyslop, rogue-likeslop, friendslop etc and every now and then something interesting will come along.
AI is just a tool in that process and is now just capable of making games that humans can make. Most of it is going to be generic slop, like humans would make, and its just a matter of time until someone with an interesting idea comes along and can then make it, like a human would.
>>
>>748998064
you're telling me this like I don't know exactly how these things work.
they're inconsistent (by design) sometimes it writes too little, sometimes too much, sometimes it sees a high level method that just does order of operations for a bunch of mechanics and it dumps a new mechanic in the middle of it.
you cant fix all this with AGENTS.md because you'd have to know every way in which is could fuck up.
or you could just go full vibe code and not care that it's a mess underneath, which is where things are headed so maybe im just wrong.
>>

I imagine trying to make anything with real story or interactable is going to be horrendously painful and not something you can easily overcome if at all because of the intricacy, placement, and actual story/text/etc involved. Compared to just slopping together general gameplay itself.

effort has always been the problem, if an ideas guy has the right flavor of ADHD and can sit there for months tweaking every detail then something of at least acceptable quality will come out the other end.

>>
>>748997189
technically yes but there's still a pretty long way to go before they're good enough to just make all the content for a game, especially a complex 3D game and have it be any good. My info might be outdated since they do improve ridiculously fast, but even for the stuff it can do if you don't want just slop you still have to do a lot of manual guidance, like if you're working with a particularly unimaginative freelance artist.

>>748997285
it definitely could not "always," only the latest couple SotA model generations are capable enough to actually put together a functioning 3D game with any significant complexity, and they're still pretty crap and badly designed and put together at least as far as I've ever seen. But this time last year they weren't even close to being able to just be told a rough concept description and then do everything on their own and come back a couple hours later with a functioning if slop as fuck game that matches it.
As models improve they do seem to get better at fuzzy hard to define and measure stuff like "creativity" and "clarity of understanding," you're right about the idea being important but I do think those people that just get the weird idea and want to make something can benefit a lot from AIs, especially if they continue to improve at those fuzzy capabilities. They aren't just copying shit from their training data, they can program novel shit as long as you can define it well enough, just like a human programmer would. Again think of it like having an infinite amount of interns you can throw at the problem. They're probably not going to make any particularly interesting decisions about what the game should be or how stuff should work on its own, but if you can give a clear mechanical description and then maybe go back and forth a few times tuning shit I think "Insane guy with a weird ass idea" is the person that stands to benefit most from this shit. 95% of those guys can't code and never make it past the prototype.

I agree, it's a weak argument. But a real argument is that people that actually cared put work into things. The 'good' AI games aren't going to be 1 shot equivalents of asset flips, they'll be actually good and have time put into them (just not as much time as it would take without AI), and they'll be few and far between.
The downside is that you will get an ungodly amount of slop from people who don't care at all.

last night I asked it to get me the Ashley Graham sliders for dragons dogma 2, it didn't because the best ones aren't public but I was pretty impressed at what it did.
it found all the popular posts/videos across like 30 (international) websites/forums and then chased up the players on twitter and bilibili and everything else, it ran a bunch of scripts I guess comparing all the sliders it could find to see what was common or not.
all in all it was doing shit for a full ~7 minutes before it came back with "here's the best I can do"

I'm so confused. You promised me normies would love endless and infinite slop. You said video games would all go away because of AI and that everyone who said they weren't interested would be left behind. And you said that just like with Stadia thanks to Google's might there would be no stopping them.
What happened? Is it really not a viable business model to force something customers aren't interested in upon them?
