As someone who loves the art of game making the truth is just that it's an arms race, so you just get fucked if you don't adapt. For example, if Capcom adopts AI and as a result can release 7 AAA games next year, you'll simply die by adhering to some principles and continuing to develop games the old way, only releasing 1 big one per year.

Of course the end result will be that it'll all come crashing down, because eventually the market will be so fucking flooded that there simply won't be enough customers to buy your games anymore. The average person buys maybe 3 full price games per year.

Well, 3D modeling and AI audio isn't there yet at least. Audio might get there soon because it should be easy to make simple sound designs that last like 5-10 seconds and sound consistent throughout your game. But for example AI music can sound really good but it's very obviously AI, and when playing a game anything that "pulls you away" can really be detrimental. 3D models just aren't consistent in regard to actual usage, like expecting it to design multiple armor designs that interact nicely with rigged models.

I think that having to put effort into making art is more compatible with how humans generally work. It's not exactly a new idea that if you give a human everything they've ever wanted in a short timeframe, they'll get bored and dissatisfied and look for a new high to work towards. Rich men often don't stop when they never have to work again. Most games are about pursuing some kind of peak. There was tedious dev work that people didn't really like doing, but the curve of "I work hard->I put out something really cool that a lot of people enjoyed through my hard work" is like the archetypal path to human satisfaction. If you reach the point where you skip to "I have the idea, claude makes it"

A lot of the legitimately pro-genAI people feel like they just refuse to comprehend the potential consequences. It's a borderline foundational idea of game design that a player will have more fun if you provide pushback. Even gambling, an almost explicitly self-destructive hobby finds appeal because the risk/reward provides pushback. The kind of person who abuses drugs tends to get worse over time because that endless feedback loop of pleasure starts to feel dull and they start going deeper. I noticed completely on my own that I was more satisfied with results when I had to personally work for them.

People aren't a monolith so there's probably someone who truly does just WANT to rot and feel as good as they're allowed, but I don't know how often I've met the person that neither wants pushback or the deeply convincing illusion of pushback.

AAA games were already AI slop. The only thing AI will do is just amplify it even more. I'm sticking to retro shit and the occasional modern game that isn't slop.

As a game dev I'm both thrilled and a little concerned
On one hand, it makes workflow easy as fuck and you don't have to pay retards or wait months
I can also draw a sketch and let diffusion models finish the shading and coloring for me
on the other hand, any retard can say "X but Y" and if it's good it will sell gangbusters
but if there's too many games, no one's gonna play my game

we are potentially looking at people just... making and playing their own games, like some people cook their own food
overall? this is both an impending renaissance and increase in competition, but it ALSO simplifies things drastically for existing gamedevs

devs have been buying asset slop from stores and just assetflipping entire games, so creation is great, you can make voicelines, art, music (here is where I draw the line a a musiican - I don't know, I like to make music myself - I would only use AI when extremely uninspired but only to see if it can give me an idea or a leitmotif but I'd still do it by hand - more fun and AI can't really make music that doesn't sound generic yet), text - however the creative issue is people just.... letting AI do EVERYTHING - like even call the shots - that is the generic trap
