"Video games" as a descriptor badly needs to be reevaluated. The medium now is not the same as the medium that existed in the 80s and 90s. To consider modern games the same class of thing as something like Castlevania on NES is just intuitively wrong. I'm not saying that all modern games aren't video games, but that the technological progression of the hardware itself has made possible a new form of entertainment that isn't video game and isn't movie and isn't book. You could call it an "immersive experience" or "interactive experience" or some other name. But a lot of what we now call games aren't games.
