THE REVOLUTION HAS BEGUN
this game was a mostly comedic parody and it was still the most affectionate and heartfelt tribute to classic sci-fi we've ever gotten in video games
>>749133245>>749133294
garbage mass effect wannabe
>>749133350It's mostly comedic in how the different races are characterized but the story itself is a serious scifi plot
>>749133493>>749133350I think the silliness of the races accentuates some of their darker qualities, like the Orz for example are scarier because they speak funny. You think they're just these goofballs but then it turns out they're the *fingers* of cosmic evil.
>>749133180*Dissolve* yourself you fucking *camper*.
>>749133350It's comedic with secondary races but the Ur-Quan are legit one of the best alien races in fiction.
>>749133584who told the ur quan to wear the silly hat
>>749133874>"No. Really. It looks good on you."
>>749133554Yeah and a lot of the sillier races end up being wiped out by the not so silly Kohr-ah if you don't know what you're doing.
So which Ur-Quan was the correctly insane race and which one's insanity was incorrect? "It's worse because I don't want to die" is not an argument, I mean from Ur-Quan perspective.
>>749134482Both were wrong, but they couldn't help it because they were instinctively hostile and paranoid. They were happiest when they were just solo scouts, Talking Pets mindfucked them permanently.
>>749133990What if I take out my cock and cockslap it? What will the kohr-ha do then?
I really like the Kzer-Za theme, that feeling of "OH SHIT", it hit me really hard because i played SC1 for the Genesis a lot and i learned to fear them. https://youtu.be/3VNul2QETPE
>>749134482According to the Ultron, the green ones are better. There. Argument over.
>>749134482Kohr-Ah were logically correct: the path with absolutely no chance they get enslaved again is to literally remove everyone else. But they forget that Ur-Quan as a race are people with souls and consciences. Becoming raging animals is already death in its own way. Kzer-Za balanced a small acceptable risk with actually being real people that stand for something other than nature eating itself.
>>749133435>the suicidal kill ourselves raceThey have to be trolling.
This sounds shitposty but a lot of it lines up: were the Ur-Quan and their dilemma an allegory for Israel following WW2?
>>749135128No. I think more specifically they're the logical conclusion of a sentient species that evolved from solitary predators. That's what they are, first and foremost.
>>749135128no, they're specifically based on how victims of abuse in childhood end up when they grow up>The always jovial head of TFB, Paul Reiche III, kindly took time out from his Christmas holidays to talk. "We intended for the alien races to exemplify human personal and cultural foibles in a focused and exaggerated manner," humbly understating that he did what we think all good science fiction should do. He also revealed a human side to the ominous Ur-Quan: "My own take on [them] came from my relationships with people who had experienced significant childhood abuse and how those traumas produced distinctly odd behaviors in adults. [Their] doctrines were the overtly crazy but internally reasonable responses to their treatment by the Dynarri, and the pain they had to endure to win their freedom from slavery." Further running themes examined cultural intolerances (racial, religious, gay etc.), as seen in the Androsynth's oppression by "normal" humans. Thankfully, the burden of proof lies with the game, now freely available.
>>749135274That's pretty neat actually
>>749135128I can definitely see that interpretation, but I highly doubt it was the writers' intentions. It's interesting to consider.
>>749135128To me it is. Fuck them demons.
>>749132884>WE COME IN PEACENice, she hot?
>>749135467PRIORITY OVERRIDE
>>749135128No because the Ur-Quan weren't lying about what happened to them.
>>749135128>the compromise between the two was to exterminate the neighbors but enslave everyone elsegrim alternate future for the Ur-Quan in the making
>>749132884My name is peace...
at some point the ur quan are going to evolve into butterflies
>plot of SC2 is some humans come back from lunch and have to fix everything>no sequel where the plot is some original-species Ur-Quans come back from lunch and have to redeem their race
>>749133584I still replay some of their speeches from time to time. I love how impassioned they could make a loud and harsh voice sound through delivery and word emphasis alone. The entire bit about them being your enemies now but in time coming to appreciate and love them when you really see what's out there is one of the better conqueror alien speeches out there.

>>749137985>pretends not to hear you, rambles about ancestral bullshit>perks up when you talk about something potentially ediblethey're just pricks.

>>749133294Looks fun. Thank you anon.
>>749138224Hell we barely get sci-fi these days.
You did get Fwiffo safely to the end of the game, right /v/?
>>749134482Neither, the Kzer Za wanted to preserve other species but instead of fixing the problem (killing or enslaving the Kohr ar) they decided to let them walk without any restrictions free to rebuild their strenght in less than a human life span so they could continue their kinetic doctrinal king of the hill forever.
>>749138323They don't pretend, they are malfunctioning terraforming bio machines that have been misinterpreting their orders into a pseudo religion.
>>749138790He didn't even make it halfway to their home planet

>>749139090you're thinking of touhou. common mistake.
>>749134832They were the least dangerous ones but it was still a time bomb waiting to happen if they won>part of your thralls are obsessed with their deity, which can be used to throw them at anything or anyone, defying any alliance or subservience >another part just wants to fuck shit up, if you win the peace of containment isn't going to keep them happy for long enough before they need to fuck shit up again>another part are a race of shitposters that would genocide other races if it was funny, and they can manipulate the previously mentioned ones>another part is on the brink of a civil war>another part is on it to consume everything>and the last part of your thralls are either too fucking scared to go out or too focused on themselvesEven if they won without the Sa-Matra they would have been done by internal conflict
>>749138224Some games come close visually but nobody is willing to write really weird sci-fi except the Slavs.
>>749132884SHOOT TO KILL
>>749139193No anon, I'm not talking about that Touhou. I remember anon posted a GIF about pixel style + an alien was talking on the screen or something.

Do we consider StarSector a modern equivalent to SC2?
>Ur-Quan: "Uh, why do I hear DOOM music?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlUe07YsV6E
>>749139090You mean this one?Far as I'm aware it's just a mockup
>>749139249I don't think they can possibly achieve complete victory, the Arilou could evade them forever while slipping through dimensions while fomenting resistance.
>>749134482in warfare aren't the usual results of the losers death or slavery?
>>749139648Not unless it became plot-driven and changed the gameplay entirely. Top-down ship battles makes them look comparable but they're not really alike any more than any other 2D games.
>>749133350What should I check out if I actually want to read classic sci-fi that feels like SC2?
>>749139693I wonder what their ultimate form would have been if they didn't get woken up from sleepy time. Their ship is already really powerful.
>>749134482honestly? neither, traveling the entire universe to enslave/massacre every other sentient species only increases the chances of you running into another species that can instantly mindcontrol you, this time one that doesn't have a countermeasure
ok but where are the god damned androsynth?
>>749139863There's no plot in StarSector?
>>749139964In hell.
>>749139873Well, do you want HFY stories about mankind going out and learning about the galaxy before becoming benevolent members of galactic civilization, or more just humanity existing in a milieu of strange alien species that have their own motivations and may or may not be hostile for a time?
>>749139972I only played a very very long time ago, don't take my word for anything
>>749140009well both really I haven't read any of this stuff (mostly a fantasy / real history guy) so I'll give anything a shot if it feels like SC2
>>749139972there's a setting, but it's like Mount and Blade, there's no narrative beyond what you make
>>749140068The two Uplift Trilogies do this pretty well. The first one isn't really a "trilogy" so much as it is an intro novel and a connected duology that aren't deeply tied. It's very much a >Humanity is not alone and this changes culture and science dramatically>Aliens have their own motivations and reasons for hating or helping humanity and humans feel like small fish in the galactic pond as war spreads>Humanity & Co. outwit the greater powersThe second trilogy is more of an exploration of alien cultures and biologies tied together with a meta-story that ties into the major reason why war breaks out across the galaxies. It's not as classically sci-fi and feels much more like science fantasy, but it's still close to what SC2's writing does. I would stay away from David Brin's bluesky though.
>>749140068Lensman is probably not a bad choice. It's really old but at least the first few books I've read carry that classic sci-fi flavor and mood.
>>749139873Lensman / Galactic Patrol, there's several elements lifted from it in the game and it's also the forefather of space opera
Why do /v/tards always post interesting pictures and never drop the name of the game in a 200 reply thread like you're expecting everyone to know your obscure game? Is it an advanced form of vague posting?

>>749139648Not in a million years.
>>749133294what kind of gameu is this?
>>749133180*Frumple*
>>749134482Well, the Ur-Quan were defeated mainly by humans and the chmmr, who were both races slave-shielded by the Kzer-Za. So the slave shield did not actually accomplish what it was intended to accomplish. If it had been the Kohr-Ah, and they had just wiped out all the Alliance races after winning the first war, then the Ur-Quan would not have been defeated.
>>749137985Juffo-Wup flows through me and I grow turgid. Violent action ensues.

Posting as instructed.
>>749133242Why are there so many species in Star Control that have wildly different anatomy among themselves? The Slylandro here have three completely different body plans, and so do the Zok Pik and Fot. At least they explain that those ones are actually three different species which have resolved their difference so thoroughly that they've forgotten which is which.

>>749141441So is the big white ship supposed to be the fully built-up Precursor Starship?
>>749140750Wasn't the slave shield of earth still not deployed? IIRC they gave everyone the choice of thralldom or isolation, and the only reason they didn't care much for earth was because until you found a ship of the precursors humans didn't have much of a chance at fighting back, that and the fact they got very distracted with the doctrine wars
>>749140713Sci-fi RPG with Asteroids style 1v1 ship combat

>>749141176I wasn't asking for an in-universe justification for it, they didn't need one. I was wondering why they made that design choice multiple times. I feel like it just serves to make the Zok-Pik-Fot and Ur-Quan less interesting. If I had to guess, I'd assume they did it just so they could have more variety in the animation.
>>749138224We don't get truly weird anything anymore. People too busy asking "What's so-and-so's tax policy?" and other dumb shit you're not supposed to care about because it's not relevant to the story.
