Laptops are responsible for the fall of CRT screens. Laptops require LCD/LED screens due to physical constraints, so when consumers started moving from Desktops to Laptops, the economies of scale factor for lcd/led screens made them cheaper to produce vs. crts.Because of their small sizes, Laptops & handheld devices are the only devices where lcd/led screens actually look good due to sufficient pixel density.
CRTs were shit mate
No the fall of CRTs is directly attributed to the fact that they're shit. Low res, bulky, and inconvenient to move or store. No idea why zoomers keep coming here to pretend they love CRTs when people my age remember when you had to fucking pay to get rid of them.
why do zoomies fetishize CRTs so much? we threw all of ours away, anybody who actually grew up with them would be glad they're gone
retarded beyond belief
>zoomers Before /vr/ was created this board used to have daily CRT threads. There was even lots of PVM discussion back in 2016.
Not trying to be rude, but pretty much every sentence of your post is incorrect
>>749822185yeah among cringe nerds
LCD tv displays, nothing else. The consumer is retarded and values practical over quality or ownership. It's dead, Jim>>749821531Weakling cope
>>749822185anon those were bait threads
>>749821771They saw people with tastes talking about them and triggered their denied need to belong to any form of cultural phenomenon >we all threw>weWuz? I have 3 crts

>>749822216explain
>>749822531What's there to explain? Laptops killing crts is probably the most idiotic thing I've heard about why crts went away.
>>749821464Ops dream crt laptop
>>749822739Laptops & handheld devices caused a surge in lcd/led screen production, which helped lower prices for lcd/led screens in general, which gave crts a competitive disadvantage, that point is correct.
>>749821464>crt TV is better than a 4k oled TV
>>749822826Which AI model did you use to make that graphic?
>Posting an actual discussion thread>On /v/ndiaUnsure what OP was expecting...
>>749821464Crts were phased out because LCDs were easier to manufacture and had massive cost savings in logistics. Crt was also mature tech that had no gains left to make, it was a good as it could ever get and came with serious limitations. Meanwhile LCD/plasma was improving fast and had alot of potential.
>>749822969Gemini
>>749822917But if CRTs were so desired they would still get produced.
>>749823182It’s called logistics anon. CRT’s weigh more and take up more space so you would need more shipments that cost more individually than you do bundling together a gorillian flatscreens. Demand be damned if the customer is willing to settle for what nets you the higher margins.
>>749821464>so when consumers started moving from Desktops to Laptopslol underagedThe second flat screens became wide spread in the late 90s normies gobbled them upIt was a new modern form factor for the new century, that replaced something bulky and literally 80 years old design, no shit everyone wanted one and adapted as soon as they could afford it or it got cheaperonly now we are realizing that CRTs had some good points, everyone in the yearly 2000s treated them as outdated junk to be replaced asap
A 60 inch crt would literally be impossible to function properly at that size and weigh like 700 pounds. Crt fags are idiots
>>749823845remember richfag friend having big ass rear projection tv. seemed insane that display can be that big. now it's pretty normal to have even bigger displays. crts couldn't have gone that big.
>>749823845You're supposed to use a regular 15-30 inch CRT TV in a regular room & then you can have a giant crt projector in a larger room.
>>749821771They never had a great childhood and never experienced golden age of gaming. They are orphaned generation.
>>749822928Yes; 4k took decades of e waste trying to get true blacks and still barely manage to beat the power of a glass screen
>>749825043and people are still dumping crts to ditches trying to get rid of them after like 100 years
>>749821771They saw shit like this and thought it applied to all games.
I really don't care and yet want you to know that I do replay, or play for first time, games on whatever screen I have. Metroid Zero Mission on TV? Nice. Rondo of Blood on chinkheld. Was fun because the game is good and not the screen it's displayed.
I've played on my CRT almost every day for the past two months while my 4k OLED has sat idle. I don't think that's about to change as I still have a fuckton of 4th and 5th gen games to play.
>>749821464Maybe if CRT monitors are actually long lasting and don't turn yellow after 7 years or so like early TN monitors. I might vastly prefer it.
>>749821531>>749821531You never used an early LCD.Displays regressed hard and only recently caught back up
Laptops cost $200. I can play games.Fuck your "NEED HI-GRADE TECH" mindset of>Well!>$6000 plays better!!!!!!!!!!!>"What does it play?">SHUT UP AND GIVE YOUR MONEY
>>749825215>dumping crts to ditches trying to get rid of them because people is dumb, we know this already
>>749826304How do you feel about the new ps6/xbox helix not having optical drives & being $1000+? also, how do you feel about the high end rtx cards?
>>749826516>How do you feel about the new ps6/xbox helix not having optical drives & being $1000+?I find its requirement as a platform to play video games too unfulfilling to be worth that cost. It most "unfulfilling" factor is a sheer lack of any fun games to play... let alone a "new" game requirement such performance.>also, how do you feel about the high end rtx cards?I have no investment in the idea of owning it as a personal home device. I am sated with the performance of PCs since the year 2000.I can argue their value on a professional-level, assuming what's being paired with has efficiency.
>>749821614>inconvenient to moveNo joke; this is the #1 reason people migrated to "flatscreen."Merely because a woman can now move it.That's it.No.Really.That's the reason CRTs stopped being used.
>>749826304I can afford to give games hardware they deserve. If you play shitty games I can see there being no drive to invest in the experience.
>>749823845I had one since the late 90s.
Have you ever tried to move a CRT you dumb zoomer? If you did you'd knew everyone fucking hated them.
>>749821464CRT died because of inferior visual quality, audible hum when on, high rate of electrical failure, and contributions to lead contamination.
ok
>>749825917Yes I did.I also used plasma
>>749828326what was plasma like?
>>749829178plasma back then is like the OLED of today, similar problems too. Make of that what you will.
>>749829178NTA, but hot and as heavy as a CRT, but the contrast was comparable to OLEDHad picrel back in the days, fucker needed a heavy-duty wallmount bcause it weighed 55kg
>>749821464the consumer chose resolution over latency, so that's why the industry is what it is today. style won over substance.
>>749821771Scanlines. That's it, really.
I'm a boomer and never had a PC. I've only ever had laptops even back in the day in the 90s.
>>749829565What were 90s laptops like? Were they worth the price? Why didn't you have a pc in the 80s?
>>749829695They were bulky and fairly shit and expensive but they were ok for web browsing and emails which is all I really did desu. I'm not really sure why I never had a PC. I think I just liked the fact I could pick up my Laptop and carry it around the house and whatnot to different rooms and take it outside the house to different places rather than having a PC just in 1 room all the time. If you want to have a look at what they were like at the time I recommend checking out old episodes of this show https://youtu.be/2i0cEO2UeBg
>>749829695Just like PC in the 90s but with being bulkier due the state of tech not being compact as today.
>>749829931are you using amd integrated graphics or an nvidia card for your current laptop that you use for games? You went with nintendo instead of a gaming console/pc hybrid system like a commodore in the 80s?
>>749826971I had thisStill have it around somewhereIt was awesomeAnd could play Doom
>>749830237I had most of the major consoles along the way so I generally only played video games on consoles. I only really got into playing games on PC towards the end of the PS3/360 generation. My current laptop has an amd processor and an Nvidia gpu but I don't really play much games anymore. All I played this year was Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, Star Wars Zero Company and Blood of the Dawnwalker.

>>749830780He might be a bong.
>>749821614This. Big screen CRTs were hard to produce and impossible to move alone. The biggest CRT produced was only 43 inches and weighed 200 fucking kg.
>>749830780Yeah because my roof is like fifty years old and solar panels + a new roof would take a million years to break even on cost.>>749830979No I'm amerishart.
>>749829413>the consumer chose resolution over latencyWell yeah. Nobody's gonna care while watching a 24-30fps broadcast and video games weren't big enough yet to influence public opinion.
>>749831203This.I like solar in concept, but when you look at the cost/savings it's obviously a scam for retards.
>>749827210What game deserves $6000 hardware and can actually put it to use? Honest question.
>>749821464The Zoomer Revisionism around CRTs is fucking stupid, if you grew up with them you'd know how shit they were.
>>749831203>>749831568It's the same as LCDs; costs are small compared to the savings. Also; you can put them on walls too. You're not going to add 500kg worth of solar panels, just enough to charge your batteries and basic energy usage
I remember early lcds having a sweet spot that you had to view the screen from or else it would be very dark.
>>749831816they were the best unless you had noodle arms
>>749821464CRTs died out because>heavy as shit>took up a lot of space>took up a lot of energy>took a lot of money to manufacture and transport>can only scale so large until everything above becomes an issueThe only thing I miss about them is how easy they are to repair.>>749822185I browsed those threads for a while. >>749832128>Guess I can't complain though because I've made bank recently on selling those same units I got for free 10 years ago.Perhaps this is the real reason for the modern CRT hype: People are trying to sell them to dumb zoomers.

What's the best linux to put on one of my old laptops for my mother in her late 60s? She has never used a computer not even with windows.
