Certain vast segments of the world population can't solve mazes, so maze dungeons were done away with.

In the old days a huge multi-level maze game was just what White people wanted. But now the rest of the world is buying games so they have to have glowing dots on the compass rose, automapping, and even yellow paint to guide you to your destination.

I'm playing Shiren 6, but that game is way too frustrating. When the RNG starts stacking up against you, you need superhuman emotional control to keep from smashing everything.
Today I played for 2 hours to upgrade a shield, and in one turn a guy used a move that knocks the shield backward, and while it was flying through the air, the shield hit one of the item-stealing enemies, who immediately teleported away with it, so I'd never be able to get it back...
1 turn ruined 2 hours of preparation.
>>
>>749832002
I think that might be the joke.

This is one of those genres that people tend to like in theory more than reality. You get this idealized image of what the game is going to be and then it is just a grindfest you get bored with.
>>
>>749833026

>then it is just a grindfest you get bored with.
It depends on the game, actually.
Modern "roguelites" don't do justice to what well-polished RPGs can truly offer. The idea is to have several solid mechanics and let the total randomness of the dungeons (without worrying about creating "fair" situations for the player) cause them to collide unpredictably, forcing the player to come up with unconventional solutions.
In fact, this is missing from practically every modern game, not just roguelites or roguelikes. Sometimes the game needs to put the player in a ridiculously unfavorable situation and force them to find the best possible solution using the resources at their disposal. But who does that these days?

It's the "Mystery Dungeon" series. I don't consider it a dungeon crawler RPG, it's more like a dungeon crawler board game.
The game is extremely addictive (on the level of "Vampire Survivors" of addiction, but with depth), but it can also be extremely frustrating.
They've made five games before this (plus a whole bunch of spin-offs), so Shiren 6 is kind of the result of taking the formula and polishing it to perfection.
It has its limitations because the RPG mechanics are too simplistic (as I said, it's more like a board game), but even so, I've already put 120 hours into the game and still feel like I'm far from exhausting all its possibilities.

Hunted - The Demon's Forge
A single player Bethesda game people seem to know very little about.
It's a 3rd person action game where you go down deeper and deeper in a long dungeon for most of the game.
You play as two characters: an female ranger elf and a human male warrior. You can switch between them at certain spots, or just play as one all game.

WHY DID THEY STOP MAKING GAMES LIKE THIS?
>>
>>749830853
They didn't but I absolutely hate this setup. I didn't originally, but it's so goddamn sterile as a setting. I need more adventure on a broader scale. I'm somewhat more tolerant of ones with distinct constructed floors(Summon Night 1/2). You can just about flip a coin over whether I think one with randomly generated floors is shit or not(Diablo? Good times. That "Tales of" one on the PSP? Go fuck yourself.). Yet, one of my favorite games ever is of the dungeon crawler variety: Dungeons of the Unforgiven. I'll be the first to say it's barebones, but damn if it isn't still fun. Gotta watch your ass around elementals, they can permanently drain your stats when they hit you, but killing them usually drops a random potion that increases one of your stats by two and drops another by one.

Depends on what your goal is. Many people have 1000s of hours in just Diablo 2 or Stardew. If your goal is just play it til the end credits roll? Sure, but that's not what video games are about. That's what shitty movie games are about. There are multiple builds to try, multiple paths to take, challenges, achievements, etc... That you can't do with 1 or 2 playthroughs in a lot of these games.

It would be cool for a game to have several dungeons, but one is incredibly deep like this. Make it not so obvious that there's more beyond a few layers deep. Put a bare layer or two for people to get lost and develop that sense where people want to keep going and see where it leads. There could be mole people, some sort of weird creatures, or Hell at the bottom.
>>
>>749831682
not even diablo 2 is like that
>>
any infinite tower/crypt action games? Brandish and Diablo are cool but I want action, like 3D or top down 2D real time like a Zelda.
A Monster Hunter-like game in a giant tower would be sick, where each floor has a boss monster guarding it and there's also more of a focus on resource management. You have to plan and then delve into the dungeon and bosses respawn every time you leave.
>>
>>749833802
How is this AT ALL like D2?
>>
>>749841268
nta but I can kind of see it, each act has a town and anything outside of the town can be considered a dungeon, sort of. D1 obviously fits the mold to a T but the structure is similar even in the later diablo games except instead of descending though one dungeon, you're progressing horizontally across a region.

funny, this isn't even the case in a lot of these game where different floors have wildly different themes/biomes. MMOs and RPGs in general if we're being honest.
When's the last time you went back to one of the early towns in an RPG?

A lot of traditional roguelikes are like that, modern versions of Angband or Tome for example, generally its japanese RPG games that still do it that way because they are more rooted in classic TTRPG tradition

No reasons to limit your game to just a dungeon with distinct level anymore.
Open-World are a legit design and no amount of contrarian bait will change that.

All the time. It's not unusual for level cap players to chill at Goldshire and watch n00b antics.

Most RPGs these days reward backtracking after you unlock some mcguffin later in the story or just outright have side-quests that scale the zone accordingly.

No, it was imitation. Do you know why D&D uses the term "dungeon master"? It's because the original intention was that each DM would have one giant dungeon that all their playgroups would be thrown at, and that'd be the whole game.
