Etrian is really great because it balances being approachable (mechanically and story wise) by anyone with the desire to try out dungeon crawlers, but even after playing many different dungeon crawlers it remains fantastic because in a sea of games either doing too little or too much to shake up the formula making it difficult to tell them apart Etrian carves its own identity, thanks to Atlus-isms like the way the de/buff system works and limit/force giving the game more strategy in battle instead of customization before you head to the tree being the only engaging part
What other crawlers are you playan etriams? For me, it’s Kowloon High. Not a fan of how tight some recruit flags are but bomber gothic lolita was worth the resets

UPDATE #5
Just about finished mapping Floor 7. It has been annoying with rooms strung together that have entranceways that become walls after you pass through them. Also, the entire floor has wrap-around 'walls'. Like in Pac-Man, if you're all the way to the West, and then go another tile, you're all the way on the East of the map. If I wasn't mapping it at all, I imagine it would be very confusing. (it still kind of is)
Etriams lent by /eog/ are all alive and well.
And and Teach have swapped out their swords for Calvary Spears. The difference, going from dealing 7-14 damage a round to 45-60 per round.
The party recruited an NPC named Laurence for a bit. I stripped him of his stuff (some good armor, and one of the aforementioned spears), as well as all of his gold and deleted him...
From the guild registry, I'm sure! It sounded like he was a noble, so I'm sure he's fine. But this is an adventure of /eog/ adventurers. Not Wizardry NPCs.
Callie of Guild Clover is still Evil. I'm not exactly sure how to fix that. Fortunately, this entry doesn't force the Good party members to ostracize her like in other entries.
Wulfric and Fluff have magic slings now, allowing them to attack (for not much damage) from the back row. It's better than burning spell slots on weaker enemies, or just defending that round.
Arashi of Ishinomori has a spiffy new mini-crossbow. And he seems to be more reliably identifying and disarming traps at his level. Which is good, as chest traps start to do some cruel stuff at lower floors. (Like de-level your characters, or reduce stats permanently.)
Pictured enemy looks like he's palming two FOEs.

I've had that in my library forever, I need to play it some day.
I picked up class of heroes 2 and started it the other day, its light but I enjoy it aside from how random the hp rolls are on level up, it practically crippled one of my front liners.
Also really enjoyed Starcrawlers and will shill that all day to anyone who wants a sci-fi crawler with some neat visual designs.

Despite liking the design they went with, I liked their early designs of shield-guantleted pugilists more. Even in IV, they had something like Dragoons in mind.

Fatlus like easy money. And ports are easier than developing games from scratch. I assume.
But I imagine market research would suggest that the demographic interested probably already own the games on 3DS. Like, I own IV, V, Nexus, and both Untolds. So, I'm not paying for a 'graphical upgrade', considering I think they look and play fine.
...Which means, even if it is relatively easy to port them over, it's still to close to their original releases, and not enough people would buy the ports/remasters to justify doing it.
The fact that Nexus wasn't cross-gen when games like Alliance Alive were is pretty telling.
So, I'd say not particularly likely.

Classic mode is unchanged, but in story mode after you finish the 4th stratum she spends the rest of the game chilling at your guild house which is admittedly is nice. However they also completely whitewash the salad genocide which is fucking lame and is one of the main reasons people hate Untold story mode so much.

Well like I said they whitewash the salad genocide pretty hard, but even then she's still cold with you. She only chooses to live at your guildhouse because she has nowhere else to go, and she only warms up to you because of Stockholm syndrome.

Following this would it be better to upgrade my Runemaster's passives like Runic Flare and Runic Guidance rather than upgrading the Rune Spells themselves?
The damage number on the spells doesn't seem to go up very much per level on something like Glacier Rune and upgrading the passives would strengthen all of my elements rather than just one besides.

Considering Rampage is ranged all 5 can be attackers.
All with level 10 Loyalty
Since Loyalty takes into account defense and buffs of the ally the Beast is covering, every Beast will have a 22% damage reduction. And since it takes into account buffs of the defended ally I can give all Beasts Level 1 Bristle. Maybe I could even give the back Beasts Level 5 Bristle for extra defense when they're being defended with Loyalty.
I wonder if Preen works with Loyalty though. Eg: Have one of the back Beasts use Preen so the enemy hits them 100% of the time, so whenever Loyalty kicks in it will defend the Beast using Preen who will also have Brittle Level 5 activated.

Just started EO2 with my Petshop guild and I'm looking forward to start the second stratum with a team of 5 Beasts because I'm not modding the game on my first playthrough.

I always rest the whole party at 22 and 42 because there's always someone who wants to rest at each point and I like to keep my exp bars even.

But if you don't care about keeping the exp bars even (in which case you're playing the game wrong but whatever) then it depends on your build plan. The big question for landy is are you doing links or not? If not, then you 100% want to rest at 22 so you can get your attack skills. If you are doing links and haven't put any points into the shield break skills (or anything else that you want to rest out of) then there isn't much value to be gained by resting at 22.

I think most classes should specialize... but then you have a unique class that's called a 'Squire' or something, and part of their uniqueness is that they're the only class that can subclass.
So, some adventurers already have a way of doing things, and hone their skills as you take them through the labyrinth, whereas the 'rookie' class is still learning things, and picks up different skills as they go along.

Ok Roninbros, once I hit level 22 I plan on resetting my skill tree to better optimize it for veteran skills. Until now, I've been experimenting with the stances, but now that I am familiar with the class, I think it's for thr best to invest in only one stance.

Yeah, for the sake of SP efficiency you want to specialize in just one stance. Put 1 point into the other 2 stances now and eventually raise them to 7 late game for the sake of the force boost though.

Drawing and clear stance specializations are good, don't get me wrong, but upper stance is just better. The main reason to pick drawing or clear is for the sake of not being meta. Also, you have gunner, survivalist, and ninja on your team, which is a LOT of Helm splitter support.

I've only explored the first floor so far, but it already shows an out-of-bounds zone, map wraparound, invisible walls, hidden passages that you can't see shit in, teleport tiles, and a fucking elevator to floor 4. I haven't even used the floor 2 stairs and I already found a floor 4 skip after accidentally walking into an invisible wall. I had to use one of my mages as a dedicated mapper spending magic charges using Dumapic every couple steps after I accidentally activated the hidden teleport and got stuck walking around in rooms that were seemingly closed off, or wrapped around, and I couldn't see shit in, or to figure out that the "A-D Buttons" tile was actually an elevator
Having enemies be groups, instead of individuals is also very strange, limiting the max damage you can do to one enemy at a time, and making it so you can actually cast spells that target single enemies, a group of enemies, or all enemies.
My previous thief fucking died, and then his revive failed and he turned to ash, and then his revive failed again he fucking disappeared into nothingness. Straight up GONE.
Every enemy so far has 5-10 health, but then I got into a fight with Murphy's Ghost after touching some statue and the motherfucker had like 100 hp or something. And my fucking mage turned evil after we killed him so I had to dump him off and get a new mage to replace him because all my other good characters didn't want him in the fucking party.
And then my Fighter levels up and LOSES STRENGTH. My characters LEVEL UP and their fucking STATS go DOWN. WHY???
Honestly compared to today's standards of difficulty, Wizardry has some massive balls to come up with this kind of crazy shit, while also being older than my dad.

But, yeah. Wizardry was a game that made you want to beat it just out of spite towards the devs.
A lot of the mechanics are taken right from AD&D, which is armor class, or AC is sort of more important than HP.
Also, in later wizardry games, you can re-roll stats. So the 'stats going down' with a level up was MEANT to prevent someone from giving themselves amazing stats and then reclassing to one of the best classes in the game at level 2-4. ...At least I think that was the reasoning behind it.

Gaiden IV or Standard V on the SNES are decent starting points.
I'm playing through Wizardy Empire at the moment. And it's relatively tame compared to the first game.
Also, it's costly for low level parties, but you can actually buy a scroll in Empire that casts Dumapic, without expending a spell slot, at the risk that there's a set percentage chance that the scroll will be destroyed upon use.
Wizardry always has floors that I call the 'Do you know where you are, no really, like, are you where you think you are?'-floors. Plenty of warp tiles and repeating hallways will have you mapping yourself in circles if you don't pause to check your coordinates every now and then.

Thats more of an ambush problem than a petrify problem. I think its a bit unfair to say that its your fault for getting ambushed. Instead of getting petrify resistance accessories (well maybe get one for your botanist), get the killing shot bow for your botanist and then fully upgrade it. The game doesn't tell you (which is fucking bullshit) but the wary eye skill is risk perception, at level 5 its a 75% chance to negate ambushes.

Also if you really need it, Barrage Brawler does have Fault blocker which is really good. That again, Barrage brawler is so fucking SP hungry that I'm not sure if I'd actually recommend it lol. IDK, Ive never actually used that skill because the only time I ever used Barrage brawler was on a team with a shaman with exorcism prayer.

Part of Wizardry's fuckery comes from Gygax's fuckery in older D&D. Dude would make dungeons where the floor gently slopes down to a lower level, so if you didn't have a dwarf (to sense the subterranean features), or your players kept bad maps (one player was a dedicated Mapper), they would accidentally walk into a level they were too weak for.

I mean the whole game steals from that era of D&D, but the dungeon shenanigans are definitely of the time.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, if your party dies in the maze, you don't get a game over screen or anything, you just keep playing. Your party is left on the tile they died at, and if you want them and all their equipment back, you need to go back into the dungeon to pick them up. But you can't just pick up infinite dead bodies, no, you need space in your party to pick up the dead characters. So you've gotta create fresh level 1 characters, then go into the maze with an incomplete party, pick up your dead soldiers, walk all the way back to the castle, heal them up, then take ANOTHER incomplete party trip to pick up the rest of your dead party members (and potentially more repeats if you go with a party of 4 or 5 characters instead of 3). I figured this all out the hard way
You also have to remember spell names, and then you have to TYPE IN THE SPELL NAME to actually use it. No you can't look up the spell list while you're in combat, idiot
And chests are sometimes trapped, and you have to type in the trap name to disarm it, but at least your thief can identify the trap for you (sometimes (occasionally (rarely)))
and then you get poison needled when your thief said crossbow trap, and you also stay poisoned until you go back to town, it doesn't just go away over time like in Final Fantasy, or disappear at the end of combat like Etrian. You're stuck with it.

UPDATE #6
An ambush by a demon, whose master was a mad alchemist that had made a portion of the 9th Floor his lab, sent the party of /eog/ members tumbling below. The room was filled with ankle-deep acid, but the party floated over it with magic, taking no damage from the tiles.
Stepping out into an anti-magic room dispelled all of the party's active spells, which I hadn't noticed at first, until I had to fight with 'unidentified enemies' in the next hallway.
In wizardry, enemies are only vaguely described to you, until you fight them long enough to identify them... or you cast a spell allowing automatic identification for the duration of that delve. This spell had been canceled in the previous room.
Gorgons and 'Winged Creatures' had bites that both petrified and poisoned.
Callie, Arashi, and Wulfric were all turned to stone, and poisoned. Medicines and magic scrolls were used to mitigate the damage, but the party had to return to the level above, fight the mad alchemist, AND make it back to the surface while down two party members.
All are alive, but Callie of Clover guild is being temporarily swapped out for Aurora of guild Triad.
Callie is my only Bishop, and Bishops are needed to identify items, but having advanced too early, she didn't learn a lot of crucial Priest spells. The plan is to level Aurora until she can be a bishop, swap back to Callie, demote to Priest, learn the spells, and become a bishop again... all before delving deeper.

tl;dr - At:Floor 9/10, all donated etriams are alive, temporary changes to party before some grinding for exp.

Answering the graphics question, is that, yes. They're visually better than an Apple II.
Interestingly, though. Most Wizardry games have an option to turn the graphics off. Or rather, to choose to play in black and white in a wireframe maze. Not sure why... But even the Wizardry I remake getting ported to Switch this month allows you to switch back and forth between 'modern' graphics, and Apple II graphics.
Pretty sure that game has been out on Steam for a year or two.

A DM isn't going to tell players too much about a monster. The reason is they don't want players to metagame encounters. But players aren't gonna turn their brains off, so after a few rounds, if they know rolling a 10 misses, and rolling an 11 misses, but rolling a 13 hits, they have a good guess what the AC is. And after you kill a few, you have a good idea on HP.

But the DM probably isn't going to divulge "this monster has petrifying breath, this monster ages you". They want the surprise, or for you to suss it out.

Giving a class a bunch of different attack skills but making one of them way more OP than the rest of them is bad design. Yeah that's my point. Having the other skills be occasionally useful is better than them never being useful at all. Its silly for an attack that ignores resistance to do more damage to an enemy weak to fire than a fire attack. And yeah, I get that helm splitters damage is to compensate for its low accuracy, but its over compensating. You could buff the damage on the elemental attacks to 250% and take away Helm splitter's ability to ignore resistance and Helm splitter builds would STILL be the meta for ronin.

Ronin are quite terrible in EO2 for most of the game.
There are only decent damage skill is Mideraba which itself only becomes good when maxed. Add to this the low speed factor of Katanas which makes Ronins always act after then emeies and very low HP. Then they have low TP too so you can't spam Mideraba either.

Orochi 5 (and its equivalents) are stronger than Midareba for most of its levels and you can unlock that in Stratum 1. Kienzan (and its equivalents) are fairly easy to unlock and can last you the entire game as CC.
In fact, people like you who beeline Midareba are just making it worse for yourself because running around spamming their elemental katana skills is straight up superior for a good bulk of the game due to the prevalence of elemental weaknesses for you to single out and the relatively low investment you have to make.
If you don't mind resting around Stratum 3, its optimal to go down Iai first for the ice attack and use that as your bread and butter for the first two stratums since that's effective against the majority of rhe major encounters before transitioning over to the classical Overhead build.

Yes, because Air Blade is overtuned and you can just spam that the whole game from the backline using any stance.
Also the new infliction formula actually utilises their high STR quite well so they can actually inflict stuff if you want them to.
Helm splitter is incredibly mediocre in Nexus, only really shining if your other attacks would be resisted.

I've just been using lvl1 Sayageki for the first 2 stratums since it only costs 2 TP and does enough damage to help one round most of the encounters, or one shot a few enemies. And then I use Orochi or Midareba for the harder enemies. Also I'm fucking insane and use curse cut transfer so ronin doesn't run out of TP too often, starting from the third stratum

Wildling has the best poison for a long time, can bind everything (25% at lv1/skill) and spears do decent damage from the back. I like to subclass it into hoplite to amplify backrow spears and have counter for the dragons, but you already have one as main. Prince(ss) is amazing for buffs, but clashes with monk for heals.

But when do the FOEs get hard? I have very limited experience with Etrian games. (I've only played the first stratum of 2 and 3. And the first two Steatums of 2U and 5) Yet in those games, I remember FOEs being kind of difficult, or atleast I'd make an effort to avoid them. Yet in this game I've pretty much just plowed throufh every FOE on the first attempt, often just killing them rather than learning their movement patterns. Is expert not the intended difficulty? The basic enemies seem harder here than in 5 or 2U.

Are they blue when you're facing them? The difficulty of Nexus is about average more or less in comparison to the rest of the series. The side caves are balanced to be harder than the main labyrinths. The one thing that Nexus does do however is give you tons of exp so it's easy to accidentally get above the level curve. Making a second party or resting if FOEs are blue immediately upon finding them the first time can help.

Not really. It makes perfect sense. The series flourished on the DS family of systems, and is suffering without them.
The whole point was to map the dungeon on the second screen, which was intuitive with a stylus and built-in touch screen. On PC and Switch, it feels so unnatural mapping. If someone (somehow) wasn't familiar with the series, a valid complaint they might have is 'why is this clunky mapping system shoehorned into the game?'.
And the answer is that it used to work on the devices they were made for. Those devices, however, are no longer supported.
As I said before, EO died with the (3)DS.

I hope Atlus makes a sixth main entry game for you guys. But I got a team to level 12 in EO1HD on Switch before not touching it since a week after launch.
It's too clunky for me, now. In a way that affects my enjoyment of the games. I don't want to touch my Switch screen with my fingers. And you can't adjust FOV (as far as I remember) to keep the map out at all times. This last thing is just nitpicking from me. But unless they radically change the series around the fact that they can't use the DS to utilize DS-dependent games, I likely won't be playing EOVI.
...I'll still buy it. I sort of have to at this point, considering I own all the others. The only condition is if it's an eshop exclusive, and I can't purchase something to put on the shelf... that's a deal-breaker for me.

I've put a lot of time into all three of the games (mostly 3 and 2) since the hd collection released and it's probably one of my most played games on Switch at this point if you add all three play-times together. I also play a lot of action games and have good muscle memory so the mapping felt fine to me after an initial period of getting used to it. It's not quite as fast as a stylus but still good enough and with a few tweaks and improvements, it could be made even better. Mapping is an important part of the series but the games are good for much, much more than just the map drawing. It's still possible that the Switch successor could have some sort of second screen but even if it doesn't, I still want it to continue on one screen.

I am sure it'll still be good blobber in it's own right. I don't really like famboying for series, I would never buy a game out of a sense of brand loyalty. Yet despite that, and despite knowing it probably won't be 100% what I want, if they were to make a new game I would make that rare mistake of preordering. Because no other game series has proven to be time and time again to be so consistently good in quality. Not even Dragon Quest, and that's a series I used to always praise for similar reasons.

Yet I fully and 100% get what you are saying. Nothing beats laying in bed, drawing maps with the stylus. It is peak comfy. And nothing will replace that.

Once you clear the first stratum, your party should be able to take out FOEs while they're still red. I usually fight each FOE as soon as I reach the end of the floor they appear on.

thus far, I like the game. It's a nice blobber with a simple, yet charming aesthetic. Aside from a wide selection of customization options for the look of your characters, I really like what I've seen so far of the skill-tree system.
It seems like you could play with two (or more) of the same class, and they would play differently depending on how you spec into your skill trees.
Also, I don't feel like there's a specific class that is 'a mandatory class'. No necessary healer, or tank means your free to experiment with the full roster of classes.
Also, no random encounters. This is always a plus for me. And combat has an interesting action economy.
Dungeon design makes use of its small footprint with locked doors, gate puzzles and shortcuts leading back to the entrance. And I like the limited light mechanic, allowing you to look at your map, but only if there's enough light to see it.
The only complaint I have seems to be with translation? I've noticed a couple of grammatical errors that slipped through QA.
But I've played entire jrpgs with messy machine translation, back when that was the only way to play some Japanese exclusive games.
It's a bit early to be giving it a full review, but I thought I'd point out the things I liked, incase anyone else here is thinking of trying it.

I only use loli/flat/small chested girls in this series and that's all I want for 6. Realistically though, there would presumably be a balance of body types as much as I'd like for it be only loli. I'm more worried about it leaning towards titty monsters though. I'm not worried about mapping but my main fear for 6 is that there won't be enough portraits suited to my taste. Attacker's STR and defender's VIT together make a modifier for the base damage value derived from attacker ATK and defender DEF during damage calc.
I'm not very good at explaining nerd shit, but here:
(aATK-dDEF)*sqr(aSTR÷dVIT) monster attack is its STR*3, while character DEF is divided by 3, modifier makers are left as is. There's more to it, but if you scour gamefags, you'll find it probably a lot cleaner than this.
Point is, HP is king.

Yes that's all Vit does, and a point of Vit is worth a lot more than a point of Def, however that should be expected. Whats frustrating is that the "Def" value shown in your character status screen is complete bullshit. Just to be clear, when people talk about Def EO, they are usually referring to the total of all the Def values on each piece of the characters equipment, and NOT the "Def" value shown in the character's status screen. The "Def" value shown there is a function based off of your Def and Vit values, but its not used in damage calculation at all. It is SUPPOSED to be a simple value for telling how bulky your character is at a glance, so that you can just look at one value instead of two that you have to then put into a formula. Unfortunately, the value shown is a garbage approximation of that, it undervalues Vit by a LOT. According to that "Def" value, an early game helmet with 10 Def will reduce damage more than a +5Vit accessory, but a simple glance at their prices should be enough to tell you how wrong that approximation is. The same is also true for the "Atk" value shown as well, a point of Str is worth far more than a point of Atk on your weapon than the value shown will have you believe (however this won't cause you to make incorrect buying decisions so we only ever complain about the "Def" value). From what I hear, they did finally fix this issue in EOV, so you can trust the values shown in that and Nexus, but just ignore it in every other game.

Anyway, the best way to reduce damage, is resistance to the relevant damage type. One box each of slash, pierce, and bash resistance will do more to reduce phys damage than any amount of Def or Vit that you can ever get on a single piece of equipment.

Race is entirely aesthetic, as far as I can tell. Class determines your Skill Trees, but NOT what weapons and armor you can equip. So... you could make a wizard. Put him in platemail, give him a zweihander, and have him be your tank.
The skill trees provide bonuses for using weapons that would make sense. So, for example, you deal X% more magic damage, but only if you're equipped with a staff or rod.
So the game doesn't outright tell you what you can and can't equip, but rewards you with skills that work for the classic theme of the class.

Fire/Ice/Volt forges are better for auto attacks and chasers.
Tec attackers so Zodiacs and Yggdroid bots use Tec forges until you start reaching the cap, after that, you're free to use anything else.
Atk forges are the generically applicable choice for damage dealers.
I'm not sure what Snipe/Sharpshooter prefer because those moves are weird.

Well I want to play 3 because I've always had a distant infatuation with it since I was young. Granted back then I only played the first few floors, but something about the game artistically capture me. Maybe it's because the ocean theme it goes for is very beautiful, or maybe it's because it feels like most of the classes try to fit themselves into that ocean theming. But I do know, when I fought the catfish in Nexus, something awakened in me again to want to play it.

I used a necromancer in a chain party and they worked well with fire and ice bombs. For volt chains you just do imbued normal attacks via shaman buff. Necromancer synergizes well enough with most classes except rovers and dragoons that use bunkers. Rovers need at least one summon slot but dragoons can be built without bunkers. Dragoons' dragon roar synergizes very well with necros' grave skill because you know the counter target is going to be attacked. Auto roar plus grave will delete random encounter extremely well. Grave in general is fantastic with wraith mastery maxed out. Good damage, ranged, unlimited counters, and paralysis that's basically guaranteed. Because of that you can also use chain killer well with it. Necros defense debuff is also good and will help everyones damage.

Even if postgame was the only measure of difficulty, EO4 is pretty weak overall. My theory is that the main game is so piss easy that the postgame slaps unprepared people in the face, so it appears relatively difficult. Yeah, 4 is definitely on the easier side but I don't think that the gap between 3, 4 and Nexus is that big.
I believe it's a combination of many players not touching the game for decades and thinking that 4 is any different from many of the other games where you can build a team that can effortlessly crush bosses.

I don't think you need to put yourself down like that, I honestly don't know how anyone would figure that out without looking up juggernaut's behavior patterns online. My 2 classic mode teams really had trouble with juggernaut because I couldn't figure it out either. It was annoying how if you used panic or stun to prevent him from using his big attack he'd immediately use it anyway on the first turn he could after recovering. Only binds could get him to move on with his moveset after preventing him from using it.

There isn't really much more information now than when they were still raising the money for it, so it's tough to say.

I expect the relationship mechanics will be similar to Miitopia, where relationship events will happen every so often where the girls gain/lose points with each other, that will then affect combat in some form. They are going with the Etriam-like 5-girl party, which they acknowledged means that someone's probably gonna end up a fifth wheel to some extent; they did also suggest threesome relations were possible but very difficult to maintain, so who knows if that made it in. I will say that I'm not amused by the basic "creepy stone brick dungeon" setting, as we were discussing at the end of last thread, and the enemy design contrasts the girls quite a bit more than I'd prefer. I mean, there's contrast in Etriam, too, but not to the extent that your lolis look like they belong in a different game from what they're fighting. We can't judge much about combat or dungeon design from just trailers, which is unfortunate because those are quite important to the game actually being good.

I'll play it, and I hope it will be decent, but I'm keeping my expectations measured.

This treasure chest is always here. So much so, that you should absolutely pop it on your map, because it'll be here next time in your new game+. Did you get it? Alright, no more treasure until the next box, two floors up. Instead gather monster parts so that the shop can sell them back to you as a MonHun crafted weapon with a mark-up.
And yes, I loved EOV for having non-combat skills to invest in. They should keep doing that.

you get non-combat skills in the other EOs but no one invests in them because they're either worthless or better used in a dedicated farming party, or your skill points are better spent on combat skills than floor skills. You don't want a necromancer and rover in the same party, I made that post before knowing you had a rover. Necromancers really need all 3 slots of the summon line to function right. They're pretty fragile and really should be in the back row unless you want their coffin attacks to not get the melee penalty but that's not too important for them.

I'll admit that having a thief class that can disarm random chests is cool, but I do NOT want EO to have RNG treasure chests.

One of the main things I like about EO is that it doesn't have any RNG bullshit. I absolutely love the conditional drop system of the later games. You have to figure out how to get your rare drops as opposed to other games where you just have to grind until you get lucky and roll that 5% for the item you want to show up. There is still a bit of RNG with the normal drops and gathering, but those drop rates are all reasonable. As long as you're not speed running, you'll get em all by the time your done with the stratum.

This is why even though they fixed grimoires to be non-cancerous in 2U I still don't approve of them, because they're essentially RNG treasure.

Yes, of course you can, the game isn't that hard, I didn't run a shaman on my chain team and they did fine. But yeah, if we're theory crafting here, not running a shaman isn't optimal.
In addition to the loss of shamen, there is also the loss of chain synergy by running two classes that can only contribute to chains situationally and never at the same time.

Also, if you need more heals, you can consider swapping to dog rover.

Nah keep the Brouni for variety. Dance Oracle will do more damage with a celestrian but not that much, you're mainly using it for the one turn debuff not the initial damage (Mana Oracle however will do a lot more damage, but even then dance is still the better skill for a chain team so it doesn't matter). The extra luck for ailment resistance is pretty nice though. The Brouni however is a lot less frail and has herbology which is always useful. All in all, I'd say celestrian is probably still better but not by enough to worth the aesthetic loss of having to use a generic race portrait instead of a proper brouni shaman portrait.

Fair enough, have to respect the portrait. Eitherway, you sold me on Shaman. Not just because of how good it is, but also because I want to use Hawk over Hound. Leads better off links, and it matches the portrait.

Semi-related, I heard Phantom synergizes well with Chain Fencer. But from every run I've used it, it's pretty miserable. Is it worth the headache over just sucking up and using Dragoon?

I used dragoon in a chain party thinking I'd set up buster cannon to fire off on the chain turn but it generally didn't work out since using move breaks the charge, and the clever strike warlock liked to dance back and forth for the chain turn. That said shields are still nice for when you aren't chaining.

Omni and Elemancer are about even with each other in the long run, but Elemancer is stronger in the short term. What's really abusable about Elemancer is that Multistrike Ether allows you to fish for Windstorm's side effect on each hit and since Reserve Magic exists, you don't have to worry about it breaking chain.

Make sure you get Ice Peck on rover. It'll procure two ice chains since it's two separate attacks: an ice aoe and stab aoe. With Chain All active that means two fencer follow-ups on a whole group of enemies. It's fantastic for the super boss and works even better with Hell Slash. Give your Shaman a bow too so their normal attacks can always give an easy chain for any element.

Yeah but the Brouni union skills all suck. Aegis shield is the only one with any use and thats only for when youre facing the superboss (in pretty much any other situation the Therian level 5 union is better because it comes with some damage) and even then its not mandatory.

Whoops, I completely forgot about phantom fencer, yeah they're also a great option, although I haven't actually tried the combo out yet. They should be able to trigger 2 chains per turn pretty frequently. The secret to making phantom fencers good is to not treat them like tanks.

Yeah, at the end of the day dragoon can't really contribute much to chain parties. They're just there to do their normal job of reducing damage. Buster cannon is nice and all, but unless theyre on a double dragoon party their main focus should still be damage reduction and not DPS. Honestly since he's running a 2/3 formation party I'd be tempted to recommend shield bearer dragoon.

Max analysis and then do whatever you want. Alchemist is pretty straight forward.
Personally I like fireball, ice lance, and lightning more than the AOE skills. Ive never tried a pain formula build, but that could be fun. Even if you don't do that pain formula build still put one point into light formula and tincture for some situational use in the post game.

I'm going to start EOV for the first time, but looking at the skill trees I'm having a hard time planning out my party. How is binding Pugilist, offensive Harbinger, shield Dragoon, hound Rover, and smoke Botanist? My idea is to boost Leading Blow and Frigid Reap with binds and ailments and have the Botanist and Rover share healing duty.

I mean, bind removal is nice, but its not THAT useful. I'd say it's more useful for dragoon to be able to do a big attack instead of just having ded turns when the FOEs are bound or confused. Besides, they can't bind you if pug and rover bind them first.
