I like to have at least one of each for use because this game likes to give you longer reload times if you use all your ammo. Gamma has only one ammo and is hard to dodge so I use it whenever I can. Beta/Gamma also work well with teammate stuns (like Denki gamma; attack after he's gotten a few alpha shots off first).You can try to separate people from their team because alpha drags people along (assuming it works right) and beta has good knockback.You have more health and your special gives damage reduction so go for the bigger threats to take pressure off your team.As for the whole ranged enemy problem, sometimes you need to just hope your teammate that has range deals with him instead. But if he doesn't/can't, then staying in areas with lots of corners (inside buildings, alleyways in Fire/Typhoon zone) helps you out. Sometimes the map just picks a spot your character isn't great with and for that you have to spam roll and try to use any available walls as cover and hope you can get close for a hit.

Strong characters like Yellow Deku and Cementoss are available straight away, and I believe you get a free unlock ticket fairly early on to unlock someone like Iida, Momo, or Denki; all pretty strong characters. You can basically get a character with any of the main "playstyles" (hit and run, mobile gunner) almost immediately, and the game is fairly balanced if you git gud, with only Ibara (the worst character) being collectively agreed upon to be horrible. Even Dabi, the second worst, isn't actually that bad when you learn him and I pull off wins with him pretty reliably.
