As a Viconia enjoyer and romancer, it pains me to see her being another fanatical stooge so quickly, after getting away from that was part of her character arc already. I would love to see an interview or have a conversation myself with whoever wrote her in bg3, and just see what their train of thought was.Sarrahhvawk at least has a letter where, in not so many words, he says "but what if Bhaal..is actually le good?" to half assedly explain why he's back as a stooge of someone he ditched already, but I don't recall such a thing for Viccy.I've seen some people try to say "well her redemption is part of an optional character side story, and she's still an asshole by the end of the game if you don't put in the effort", which is factually true, however it misses an important part, which is that Viconia learns her lesson about being a fanatical goon for an evil god as a part of her backstory, and she's on the surface at all because she abandoned her post as a murderhobo priest. So her characterization in bg3 actually betrays her *backstory*, not just the events of bg2.I think I know the answer though. Viccy simply dies in her happy ending, and so the person at Larian who wanted to write her into the game said "Well her happy ending isn't canon since we want her alive, so her evil ending must be, so...she's back to being an evil stooge!". But they forgot that she still wouldn't be an evil stooge of someone like Shar, she would be an evil stooge for herself.Viccy and Minthy actually have a lot in common. Neither of them actually turn good in heir romances, the best you get is a shift to neutral. Both of them abandoned their evil wacko god. There's an argument that Viccy is better though, because she abandons wacko because of an actual choice, whereas Minthy only did it because she felt personally betrayed. Viccy has an actual alignment shift by the end of the game, whereas Minthy is always LE/NE. But that's part of what makes Minthy unique, an actual evil romance.

How come Shart is the only character with a free get out of jail card if you go down her "evil" route? You can shank Dykesong, causing everyone at last light to die, which causes Jaheira to die, which leads to you having to kill Minsc. Yet all you have to do is convince her to not kill her parents which she does herself if you get the right scenes ( this is still bugged though) and she'll just get a happily ever after.

I think someone showed themselves recruiting Minsc with Jaheira dead. I've never tried it myself since my evil character recruited them both then murdered them both. But supposedly Minsc is recruitable without Jaheira. Anyway, Eilistraee proves this wrong. She left a cushy life in heaven and then died fighting literally just to be with her children and give them a chance in life. Just because some gods are assholes doesn't mean you can slander all of them like this. I like Gale but you really should be able to be more forceful here, since what he's saying is factually untrue.Also I always find this decision difficult. Under normal circumstances I probably would advise my friend to not get themselves killed. We know what happened to Karsus, we know what happened to the weave, and we have multiple people who do know what they're talking about saying not to do it. Every sign points towards not doing it, but then Gale just says "but I'm special, I can do it!". It's lame. But what's double super lame is the meta knowledge from having played the game already that it does work out. He does succeed and becomes a god.Which brings us to the 5th topic in one post, which is that all of the epilogues are cringe. Shar forgetting to torture Shart, Astarion not being dead, Gale controlling the Karsite weave, Minthy's plan to take over the city is smooth sailing, Vlaakith hasn't just wished Lazy or Orpheus dead since the authors established she can do that at any time over the phone, Zariel doesn't just nuke Karl (look up Zariel's abilities in decent into avernus). All of these are so cringe. They're all having your cake and eating it too. Wish fulfillment carebear hugbox. No consequences for reckless behavior, unrealistic success when a person would be instantly killed in half of these situations.The only one that's reasonable is Wyll's, which is just "I lost my powers but I'm doing ok as a duke". And the side characters like Jaheira and Halsin.Game has no teeth.

Changing the capabilities of Wish from the rulebook eternally introduces the plot hole of "well why doesn't Vlaakith just Wish for X". Orpheus dead, The Emperor dead, all kinds of problems are solved with Swen's homebrew version of Wish. Swen changed the capabilities of Wish, and in doing so he created a plot hole. Gortash's life timeline is a bit wonky, Balduran's timeline is a bit wonky, Withers directly contradicts himself regarding whether Illithids have souls, the narrator directly contradicts herself regarding which mindflayer tadpoled you, a few other minor things like this. This game is very large so we're not asking for airtight lore and timelines, but there are a few that are kind of blatant.The second is wish fulfillment. Many of the epilogues are shallow masturbatory wish fulfillment that enter the realm of unrealistic. Nobody is asking for misery porn, but rather to just keep things grounded. Karl, Lazy, Minthy, Gale, Shart all have epilogues that just defy logic for the sake of a carebear hug. Good writing gives you consequences. Decisions carry no weight if everything is a carebear, which makes things less fun. No stakes means no drama. Why do I care about Gale's problem if he just wins in every outcome? Why do I labor over the decision with Shart's parents if Shar literally simply forgets to torture her later? There are no stakes, so it's weak and pointless.Related to that, is bending the story around characters. Gale and Wyll just say "gosh, a sharran!" and that's it. Gale makes a joke about your slayer form. Karlach says you did good to admit it to her when you murder Alfira. Lae'zel shuts the fuck up immediately when Shart tells her to regarding the artifact at the bridge. These reactions are absurd, but they all exist because it's a game with no real intra-party conflict, to the point of being unrealistic.

How do romances fucking work in this game?I got to Act 3 and wasn't satisfied with where I was at, so I decided to start over. However, I somehow romanced Astarion (despite the fact I explicitly told him it was a one-time fling) and he ended up breaking up with me at Moonrise. I didn't get very far into Act 3 to check up on the other romances, but judging how getting involved in one character seems to lock you out of others, I'm just wonder if the game gives you a second chance, or if that's it if a character breaks up with you.

But this is one of the annoying things about the game. It just has no teeth. You're never punished for reckless behavior, everyone wins except in the cases where you specifically choose Shart or Lazy to die in bad endings. You're never actually put in a tough situation. When you play this game, you're watching pretty graphics and animations constantly.Despite being unrealistic carebears, the waifus and husbandos in the game are great despite that. Gale, Asty, Shart, Lazy, Karl, the whole cast have many fans and with good reason. I love Minthy.Despite pointing out some times where attention to detail was lost, the game still usually is good about attention to detail. There were several times where the game referenced something I did that were satisfying. Or I thought to myself "Surely this won't work..." and it did work because the developers also thought about it. After playing crpg's for decades you watch for things the game is supposed to do and bg3 had a few good ones.Environment design. Walking around the monastery, shadowcurse lands, the city, they're all beautiful.Durge is great, I'm very glad it exists.
