It's probably possible to figure out with extreme certainty what a client's input device is by keeping a record of everything they send to the server and feeding it to a function that plots it along a number of axes, then comparing outputs to labelled data. A matchmaking system does have the benefit of being a black box. It's possible that sorting on input heuristic could eliminate the cheater problem without any legal liability. I wonder what valve's new system is doing, if anything at all, that makes them confident enough to issue bans.

I know I’ve asked about this before, but I’ve managed to play a practice 18v18 comp match with bots and it does seem as though it is a viable comp format for those who don’t want to have weapon bans. However, since there is almost a guarantee to be a counter to one’s class on the other team, this style would mandate perfect play by everyone just to continue surviving, especially through choke points, so this may offset any potential benefits of using otherwise banned weapons. For example, a Machina sniper could destroy one engy’s sentry, but the other one could simply wrangle his and point it in the sniper’s direction.What does everyone think?
