And then, you can find solutions that fix those holes whilst staying true to (or improving upon) that authorial intent to make a better story.

Can I talk for a moment about why I don't like Whispangle?It has nothing to do with the lesbian part. If either Tangle or Whisper were male and nothing else was different, this wouldn't change. My main problem is them being together so much runs counterproductive to the basis of their characters.Tangle was clearly introduced to be a female version of Sonic, the "wild and free, can't catch me" type who exists to bring chaos and disorder to those looking to force order onto others. For a bit, she was this, but once Whisper happened, Tangle effectively became Whisper's cryrag. Every once in a while signs of the original Tangle appear, but for the most part she's just there to give Whisper a shoulder to cry on, and it's just so jarring to see this ADHD-ridden basketcase suddenly be so calm and collected so as to be reassuring. It also doesn't help that her friendship with Jewel was introduced as something important but then tossed out so quickly in favor of Whisper.Whisper meanwhile, I don't like her on her own, but I feel gluing her to Tangle has really been to her detriment. WITHOUT Tangle around, Whisper often comes off as calm, collected and capable, but when Tangle IS around it feels as if the writers do their best to come up with SOME kind of excuse to make her weepy and needy, on top of not nearly living up to the hype Silver built her up to be in her debut. Literally all of Whisper's best moments were when Tangle WASN'T there.It also annoys me that so many people overlook all these issues just because "Oh look, lesbians, that means they're perfect." I don't have any kind of homophobic problem with that, it just bothers me that people like them BECAUSE of that and not who or what they are as characters. Putting these two together, especially so soon after their introductions, really killed any possibility for these characters to be good, and I don't feel it's possible to walk back from that at this point.

Princess Sally Acorn is a great no matter who shes with she's a strong capable great character who is strong willed, responsible, commanding, kind of nice sometimes, rational, a planner, all qualities that make a great leader in a fight for freedom. She may have made some missteps along the way but her sacrifice to save the world solidified her as one of the Sonic greats that is a seminal character who belongs in the pantheon of best Sonic characters.
