To understand Yuki, you have to realize that Yuki has spent the past 7+ years of his life pretending to be Haruhi Suzumiya. This is not a joke. See pic related. For those unfamiliar with the source material, basically what you have to know is that Haruhi is an extremely genki and excitable high school girl who drags her clique into all sorts of zany hijinks that they really don't want to go along with but they indulge her every whim because she's actually a powerful goddess so everyone is desperate to keep her in a good mood. I'm not going to speculate too much about the root causes, but it's obvious that Yuki has some sort of developmental issues socially. And after watching Haruhi's anime, he latched onto her as a paragon of everything he wanted to be. Essentially, when making decisions, he stops and asks himself, "What would Haruhi do in this situation?" If you've seen the show then you probably realize why that's a terrible fucking idea, but this nuance has evidently been lost on Yuki despite everyone in the world telling him otherwise. Being a perpetually obnoxious and over-the-top character who gives speeches about the power of love and community does not, in fact, endear you to anyone. Nor does the "Just keep on showering them with love and eventually they'll come around!" trope actually play out. Even worse than that is the fact that he has moved on from emulating Haruhi as she is to Haruhi as he thinks she should be, a more "mature" version. You might think that this has to be an improvement, but you're forgetting that this is maturity as envisioned by Yuki, which basically boils down to the exact same personality but being even more assertive about his convictions.
