A-life is the persistent world system. When the game starts the world populates with stalkers that have preset routines including travelling along several spots and doing tasks, sometimes a dice roll happens and they have things happen to them like an encounter or a fight and they win or lose, and that remains persistent for the whole game. None of this happens in the actual game world you see, it's just simulated in code like a text adventure type thing, but when you enter an area the game actually spawns the NPCs and items in place as if it had actually happened. Sometimes if you're close enough it does happen and you can see it.

So went to wander around, only shot the shotgun a bit, got anomaly'd because that ones of a quest are bullshit and lo and behold the pistol wasn't at 100%, neither was the mp5, like 2k on that gun alone for repairs.
Either taking damage, or maybe just anomalies, damages everything equipped or I REALLY HOPE NOT the tooltip in the upgrade menu that says "reduces wear from external sources" is very much literal and I would be extremely mad if that is the case. Still a bit miffed if it is the first thing, like repair costs aren't already kind of shit.

It works. It's way better than the echo one too. The artifact "spawn in" effect is way less pronounced with bear for some reason though.

I did play Shadow of Chernobyl once but got softlocked because apparently there was a bug where reloading a save caused enemies around you to get alerted and I was in the middle of a building in one of the military bases and so got stuck forever dying there because I could never find a way to fight my way out after sneaking in, so I am worried about retrying it

If I recall, loading a save makes you draw your weapon, if no weapon your knife, that makes noise and people get angery some said that if you have the bolt equiped when you save then when reloading you don't make noise.
Still with the camp I just said fuck that noise and killed everyone, stealth is pretty fucked in the games in general just camp a corridor and let them come single file, single headshot ez, multiple saves are your friend in case of bullshit or bugshit or whatever.

Do play SoC, it is a one time experience I tell you. If shit gets rough most everything can be cheesed one way or another, knife secondary attack has some meme potential trust

It was inside a cave full of anomalies. At the end of it there was a unique Vintar variant and a stash that had some blueprints and a bunch of other small stuff. When I picked it up he spawned. Unless that was an effect of the cave specifically, he basically makes you trip out and you slowly lose health and ghosts like around the labs attack you. He still has his regular attacks as well. When I got outside my head was still spinning and bandits attacked. I killed them and a few seconds later the bodies disappeared so they were hallucinations even though the controller was already dead. It was intense, and I used all my remaining grenades and a bunch of shotgun shells.

Great game, loving the sequel - awesome world and atmosphere

pros:
gun play
graphics
world
atmosphere
lootan

kino

cons:
- Equipment degrades too fast, 1 gun fight and now you have to spend 3000 to fix your AK, quests pay 3k...
- bulletsponge enemies, shooting a mutant 5 times in the head with a shotgun still wont take it down on rookie
- optimization, Im running 1080ti on full max graphics and I avg about 35 fps, 25fps in cities ( but it really does look amazing )
- Some minor bugs, certain quest objectives bug out for me, had to close game and reopen to get some of the objectives to spawn once or twice
- lastly it takes forever to get from one side to another, the map is huge, but there is like 500 meters of nothing between areas so you end up just drinking energy drinks and running and waiting for your stamina bar to catch up, and god help you if you want to carry some loot back, holding 4-5 guns basically lets you sprint in 50 meter increments, not fun if you hoard like me.

overall 8/10, very happy with the sequel, its a perfect sequel, basically the Original Stalker with modern graphics and more content, whats not to love!

Adding to my previous post

the beginner pistol is amazing once you get good with headshots, Its my primary weapon for 80% of encounters because its super cheap to fix and can 1hit kill any human enemy with a headshot if they arent wearing a helmet. I found an extended magazine and silencer for the start pistol and I love using it

I think mutants have massive health because otherwise it wouldnt be as dramatic or exciting if all it took was mag dumping a bloodstalker once to kill it, there is a bit of strategy involved in it because of that

stamina is a bit odd because in closed spaces you run really fast and far, but as soon as you have to travel to new areas, it becomes a 5-10 minute jog through the woods. I appreciate that they made a massive world, but it feels like they could have brought everything closer by about 20% instead of leaving large distances between points of interest. Still, I love how large the world feels, but feels a bit larger than it needs to be. ( massive improvement on the original world though for sure )

Economy is a bit expensive also, I have never bought anything really because it all feels too expensive, I'm mid game and only now do i feel comfortable enough modding guns and fixing them for thousands every time I come back to base.

Also last thing, broken weapons should have been scrappable for parts or something, you cant sell them so you basically just throw away any weapon below 40% durability which I think could have been an interesting scrap mechanic for unlocking rare gun parts or something.

Still absolutely enjoying this experience, im 16 hours in - probably explored about 40% of the world so far just focusing on the main story for now, tons of sidequests and locations I just ran by so I'll explore those later.

It does. Tried killing a bloodsucker on all three. Rookie took less shots with the double barrel. Damage you take I hear isn't changed. The difficulty logic is just the lame old "you do less damage and enemies have more HP" bullshit.
Really makes me wonder where they found these devs, or if their balls were held in a vice grip by the investors to do the same shit everyone does because "that's what sells. :^)".

That's what I did and it feels much better. Fleshes now die to two or three shots from a shotgun, dogs die to one. Bloodsucker and poltergeist fights are now manageable, and I don't have to sell my organs to pay for equipment repairs and upgrades. Honestly, the Veteran difficulty is bullshit, the game is clearly not balanced for it.

Anyone else just run away from mutants? You dont really get anything out of killing them, its a massive waste of bullets and money going after bloodsuckers, I just pop a energy drink and run away if at all possible, same goes for random bandits desu. I know thats not "kino" but im speedrunning the story - im not going to spent 3 minutes cheesing a bloodsucker through a doorway blasting him 8 times with my shotgun and wasting 4 medkits. Starter pistol is really comfy, I got the silencer and extended magazine, and frequently clear out bases without anyone seeing or hearing me. Also it costs like next to nothing to fix, real treat.

i want the core vanilla experience to be intact in its totality. that means the full main story, as well as the original sounds and music. when i step out of sid's bunker i want to hear the original cordon theme instead of some atmospheric silent hill sounding bullshit. i don't mind extra quests and areas and guns and items, as long as they're layered on top of all the original stuff. as soon as the mod starts swapping out music tracks or changing vanilla guns to other guns, my vagina dries up

i also don't want any of those mods that changes all dialogue to russian/ukrainian but doesn't even bother to provide subtitles. i want to know what the fuck people are saying. so either it keeps the original shitty but amusing english dub, or it properly subtitles ambient dialogue

for now i guess i'm either going with starter pack (https://www.moddb.com/mods/starter-pack) or the xpresstunings remaster (https://www.moddb.com/mods/xpresstunings-remaster-edition) because everything else immediately violates my 'original sounds and music' stipulation. but i'd love to hear your recommendations. thank you!

It used to have some extra usefulness, for example, if you had a really good gun that wasn't your thing, you could donate it to a higher grade friendly or neutral stalker that had a terrible loadout and he ends with a higher grade of survivability, you could tactically use that by giving slightly better gear to people in certain chokepoints or areas so other hostile NPCs or mutants wouldn't easily get near the areas you didn't want them to be at. It wasn't guaranteed to be succesful but it had permanence, it made a difference, you could later meet the same stalker and that meant he survived, your decision MADE some change in the world. It was cool. Is cool. Which is why A-Life is so integral to this entire setting. Even the mutants and hostile NPCs could use the same logic against you by going around, winning fights and looting better stuff.

However im a hoarder and unique gun collector so I basically refuse to throw or even use those weapons :')

Fixing armour is straight bullshit though, one encounter and your armor repairs cost thousands, meanwhile your lucky to break even after the quest rewards and looting. At least you find a new suit of armour fairly regularly, so theres no point in repairing them ever

At what point did you fully come to terms with the idea that STALKER as you know it is dead and never coming back? Was it the movie trailer audio stings? Was it the Ubisoft UI? Was it the 50th John Wick action cutscene? Was it when you reached the modern art deco SIRCAA institute? Was it when you realized A-Life 2.0 is fake and it's just spawning random shit in your radius? Was it when the English dub was mostly British voice actors?

Bad economy, overly spongey monsters, bad performance, glitchy shimmery ray traced lighting, bugs, all of these things can and will be fixed by modders or the developers, but the fact that this game was developed by a studio that is "GSC" in name only as it relates to Shadow of Chernobyl, and that the people making this game seemingly do not know or even care about what made the original so special in the hearts of fans can never be changed.

With AMK mod in SoC medkits dont really help you, you either kill the other guys flawlessly or you die in 1-2 hits. You arent really tanking to heal that often. Love the gunfights with AMK mod.

Too bad veteran mode in this game doesnt make it like the master mode in SoC where it's more damage for everyone in the game, not bullet sponge garbage. Normal actually seems fine though so whatever. Veteran just sucks to play.

It never worked like that, the "on Master enemies are actually less bullet spongey" bullshit is a meme. In SoC Master difficulty reduced player's weapon damage to its base value (lower difficulties had a bonus to player's damage) and lowered your damage resistance. In the later games, player's weapon damage is the same on all difficulty levels.

found another controller behind the scientist bunker in Yantar
spotted it before it spotted me so I killed it very carefully
took exactly 21 headshots from vss
didn't spot me while I shot at it with vss, just walked back and forth after getting hit
but if I fired non-silenced guns from where I was, it immediately spotted me

reloaded and killed it a couple more times to test it
noticed that pull thing they do doesn't actually do any damage at all, just disorients you for a moment
but being near it causes hallucinations and rapid health loss, which persist for a while even after it dies
shooting it from afar without being noticed you don't get any hallucinations or damage, after it spots you it needs to get close enough to affect you with hallucinations and damage, but it can do that pull thing from farther away if it has LoS
and they can turn stalkers nearby to zombies - a friendly squad rolled up during one attempt, two died, one started mumbling and shooting at me.
also spawns hallucinations of stalkers that attack you, they do damage and fight similar to real stalkers, but if you try to loot them they disappear

tldr; pull does no damage, hallucinations hurt, controllers are ez at range a bitch up close like previous games, but tankier.

It's not quite the same thing, SPT is a mod glued onto an already poorly performing game intended to puppeteer player NPCs in an entirely live environment with no offline (NPC doesn't actually show up in the world but keeps simulating things on a more basic level) simulation.
It's a hackjob that, admittedly, did a pretty impressive job given how they had to implement it.
A-Life in the older games is a key part of the engine on a fundamental level, and effectively simulates several NPCs carrying out their needs, from stalkers working to get money to buy food, to dogs sleeping or hunting other animals, and just lets them all clash together in interesting ways.
It relies on things like offline simulation to reduce the performance cost, which is how the older games could simulate the entire zone.

It seems like there's a bit more abstraction with this.
From what I can tell, it's less that the AI has a set of needs that it wants to fill when they get low, and instead a list of timers that go off and push the NPC to do certain things.
It's impossible to say for certain however as I can't actually look at the logic for the game, and I could absolutely be interpreting things incorrectly as I'm doing the equivalent of staring into tea leaves and trying to intuit what the weather tomorrow will be.

A-Life was heavily gimped in the 1.0 version of STALKER because they couldn't get it working right. Some of the A-Life stuff still worked for wandering groups of NPCs. It got fixed somewhat with the later patches and modders eventually put most of the systems back in to the game with mods like AMK and so on but even they had to turn off parts of it to keep it from breaking the entire game. Call of Pripyat had an implementation closer to what was originally planned. Clear Sky faked it a lot.

It's never worked properly in the custom engine it was built for, I don't know why anyone expected that a UE5 implementation would ever be anything more than marketing buzzwords. It's not going to get fixed because there's nothing to fix.

From the complaints it sounds like they just need to adjust the spawn rules so it happens out of sight of the player and give those spawned in a wild a random set of destinations/actions and then most of the accusations of A-Life not being in will largely vanish
