According to Knuckles' Chaotix, Ring Power produces a strange time-dimensional space that links every ring together. And for the Super Ring, this dimensional space could summon the Master Emerald directly. This is pretty much shown in S3:K with the Super Rings directly warping you to Hidden Palace. So this strange dimensional space must be the Special Zone. The Special Zone is often where the Chaos Emeralds are located, in the classic and advance and rush games and Heroes and wherever else. The Special Zone is filled with springs and bumpers and the like, as well. I have come to the conclusion that the nature of Sonic's World is a direct result of the Special Zone's inherent "chaos" bleeding out into "Earth" through all the rings scattered everywhere. Ever since the Ancients brought the Chaos Emeralds to Earth, they brought this entire dimension of chaos energy that, through the Master Emerald, clouds the entire planet if not the whole cosmos with that power. Wherever there are rings lined up, there is chaos energy saturated in the ground below and the air you breathe. It is this chaos energy that warps the landscape and architecture into pinball rollercoaster pathways with springs and bumpers and stuff arranged in perfect chaos. It's like these roads are built for Sonic because he is an embodiment of that chaos, thus he is able to maneuver through chaotic worlds. Speed Highway and Radical Highway are not actually designed like that. They are built to be regular highways. But, those places have become "zones". Areas that are heavily saturated with a vast abundance of chaos energy with a large ring count spread all over the place, twisting those highways into strange chaotic bizarrchitecture. It's within these "zones" that you can gather 50 Rings to accumulate a large enough amount of Ring Power to allow you to slip into that "Special" Zone directly, and access the realm of pure chaos itself. This is also what a "Super" form essentially is.
