I think the old trinities should be shaken up and we explore new friendship dynamics. The new saga should try new things.

The new group that has an adventure is... Kairi, she represents the Destiny Island trio. Aqua, she represents the Land of Departure trio. Roxas, he represents the Twilight Town trio. Could probably make a game with just one of these premises: have the first encounters with the Lost Masters, get the Ark and go look for Sora, deal with Darklings, investigate Daybreak Town mysteries, etc. There is lots of stuff for them to do while Sora is away.

Or maybe Lea should be the Twilight Town representative. He has the missing girl to find. Also, him and Aqua didn't seem to get along during the replica battle, so it would be extra interesting to see them travel together, kind of like how Sora didn't get along with Donald at first.

I'd be content if they released a smaller adventure, like Fragmentary Passage sized. Give us anything at this point.

Nomura said he nearly put Verum Rex before KH4. Plus Yozora and his world seem pretty important to the upcoming arc, they're not going to be able to satisfyingly fit all that into 4 and I doubt Nomura will compromise again after Versus XIII. It might even be the last game he directs given the timeline and him approaching retirement age. And him even confirming the existence of a Verum Rex project when he's normally so secretive shouldn't be shrugged off.

I'd just be surprised to see Verum Rex get canned after all that's happened. And realistically, considering how long these games take to make now there probably aren't many major KH titles left in the pipeline so throwing out VR makes even less sense. With Dark Road getting shelved, there was more urgency to wrap up the Dark Seeker arc and move onto the 2nd Phase. Maybe I'm making too many assumptions but I don't know if the Lost Master arc will be as lengthy as Dark Seeker. Take into consideration all the set up the mobile games/χ series do as well which might take some of the weight off. χ/Back Cover/Union Cross could've already basically been the Birth by Sleep for the new arc. Verum Rex might be the new Days if it's a Yozora prequel set before 4. So you could be looking at another two or three unannounced games filling the roles of Re:coded, Dream Drop Distance and KH3. Maybe Missing Link fills one of those too. I'm starting to believe KH5 might be the end. But there's still potentially room for one or two console games before we get into damn 2040s.

Making Verum Rex as a console experience is essentially asking people to wait what would realistically be close to 15 years to get Kingdom Hearts 5 after Kingdom Hearts 4 comes out. He knew that he couldn't make people wait that long for Kingdom Hearts 4. Even if KH4 ends like KH2 with a happy ending, making people wait like 12-13 years for a sequel isn't a good thing. We're past the days where they could crank out endless handheld games.

It'd be cool to see members of different trios all mixed into a group. Nomura seems to favor groups of five more now at least in the mobile games. A team made up of Kairi and Axel training under Aqua with Isa and Ventus along for the ride would be cool. Maybe Terra would stay to watch over the Land of Departure as steward like Eraqus or go off to Twilight Town (it does neighbor Land of Departure) and keep an eye on Namine and the others while they're gone which could tie in with the connection they shared via Lingering Will.

It's more likely it'd be canned than that or reworked into a DLC. Besides I don't think the story would be Days tier for them to consider it for a full console game in the first place especially in the current video game climate. But we don't know enough about how unreality fits into the larger arc to judge how important a whole game centered on Yozora and that world would be. If the lost masters have been there a while though and they're some of the villains, plus those potential Missing Link tie-ins to KH4 and Quadratum Nomura teased, then I think Verum Rex could be an important stepping stone that's more like BBS. I think at first Verum Rex seemed it would be this closed off thing from the current story but I kind of doubt it the more info has come out. I'd be surprised if it was some detour Nomura wanted to do to rekindle Versus XIII. If you're going to introduce such a massive thing to the KH series, I think it has to be relevant.

Plus another thing about Days was the og organization, Xemnas and Roxas were all done away with at the end of 2 (at the time at least) but I doubt the lost masters are all being defeated at the end of KH4. Yozora might stick around. So if they don't really explain what they've been up to in much depth in KH4 over on the other side Verum Rex being the next game would be important. There's a lot of what ifs and guessing with this though. But on your other point about Nomura mentioning Dark Road, I don't think he ever outright confirmed a Xehanort game before KH3 had come out, he expressed some interest in exploring his past in interviews but you could've interpreted that as what he ended up doing in DDD. He only revealed the then untitled Xehanort game was shelved in the KH3 ultimania iirc. He's gone and revealed the plans for Verum Rex very early on and he never used the word shelved to describe it. So it's not an identical scenario.

More over, in regards to what it could offer in terms of the lost masters, they all have to be left standing so Yozora won't really be able to have meaningful confrontations with them. I feel as a game if it's not introducing the world of Quadratum the only thing it could really offer is more details on Yozora's situation and people who stole Yozora's body, and Nameless Star's almost everything. But at the same time, I feel like that's going to be at least addressed in KH4 as well with the guy waltzing around Quadratum. Verum Rex just feels like it'd be a game for world building more than actually building the plot.

But it wasn't "skipped" Nomura just said he prioritized the numbered title knowing it'd be a long time between Sora's disappearance in 3 and KH4 if they made Verum Rex first. And there's a lot we don't know. Unreality might be important for understanding where the series is headed based on how it parallels Kingdom Hearts' own story so far. There's been this whole other history playing out in the background. One that at least Luxord was involved so his backstory is probably a given like it was with Lauriam and Elrena. Missing Link is also dealing with a mysterious forgotten era so that might be why it's important to KH4 if there's crossover between the two realities there on the astral plane. Scala and Quadratum are both the only worlds with Latin names as well. So I think Missing Link is going to be the mobile game used to support and explain stuff in KH4 and onward potentially. Seems redundant to make Verum Rex a mobile game too in that case.

I say worst case scenario Verum Rex is DLC for 4 because those can be pretty big nowadays, it saves on time and they have Quadratum assets made. But then also if they've got the hang of UE5 and have built enough assets to give them a head start on Verum Rex it might be a lot easier for them to slip into development of that game immediately after 4. They might even forgo major DLC for 4 to do that like Square just announced they're not giving VII Rebirth DLC to get the third game out quicker. So either way KH4 and Verum Rex could be a package deal of sorts.

The problem is that we don't get any stories at all now.
Days, coded and BBS were all released in span of a year, it's crazy to think that we got squat since Melody of Memory.
Why does everything have to be an AAA game now? Why didn't they release a single player cut of KHUX complete with the original script of Dark Road complete with a CoM gameplay recreation for purchase? Since they used vector-based graphics they could have released it in every platform just fine, even if it wouldn't have sold millions.
I really hope Missing Link is undergoing a major reconstruction because this game won't even last a year otherwise.

That’s the perfect team. All the Realm of Light stuff going on right now... Kairi’s training under Aqua, whatever that might detail. Lea and Isa’s search for the missing girl. Ventus with his Daybreak Town connections. And they'd all have an interest in finding a way to reach out to Sora. All plot points could be explored with these five. And Terra should be left behind. I like the guy, but I think the conversation with ghost Eraqus was setting up something. He told Terra to protect Aqua and Ventus. So, when the adventure gets crazy and the fivesome become stranded/defeated, that’s Terra’s big heroic moment to show up. I also like the idea of Terra spending time with Namine, that's the new kind of relationships I'd love to see develop since Namine's circle of friends hasn't changed since Days, a game from 2009.

It does sound like structurally they want Missing Link to be more like a traditional KH game on console in the story department but that's it. Maybe that's just things are like now. A lot of movies are the same now they either have inflated budgets or they're small indie things. Mid-budget entertainment has kind of died. They only want to pay for marketing and physical releases for major KH games and not something that'll get deemed a "spinoff" and sell less. Better to put all their chips on a mobile game where they can try and make a profit with microtransactions.

It's not really canon but I like the short story set after 3 of him reflecting on his decade long imprisonment in a realm of nothingness and wondering if Eraqus truly forgave him or if he'll have to spend the rest of his life atoning for his mistakes. Terra's been through a lot and it doesn't seem like he's over his darkness the same way Riku is because it's still very recent for him. It'd be interesting to see how he deals with that compared with Riku. He did seem in better spirits at the start of Limit Cut a year after 3 though.

Skipped might have not been the exact right word, but it's more that if it could offer anything that couldn't be revealed in KH4 itself, then it couldn't have it's order hypothetically swapped. In the position that Verum Rex is in, it can't really do anything aside from just flesh out Quadratum more than KH4 can, from it being from a perspective of a Quadratum native. I'd still expect Disney worlds on top of that.
If the main thing that Verum Rex can offer is just better showcasing the world of Quadratum, I'd wonder if it wouldn't be better suited to something like a mobile game. Like how I really wonder how many of the things in KHUX and Dark Road are going to be truly relevant but it still fleshed out those time periods more than the KH universe from BBS onwards. I wonder if Verum Rex couldn't be a sister mobile game akin what Dark Road was for KHUX. Like how Dark Road was essentially a continuation of KHUX. DLC could also work, but I don't think you'd get more than a few hours of actual story from DLC. I'd imagine it wouldn't really be a proper Yozora campaign either, more just fleshing out what was already there for Yozora and adding a couple of new things.

At the end of DDD does Sora go into the sleeping realm to find the dream eaters? Is that one different than the actual traverse town? Did they wake this world up?

Yeah it was still the sleeping Traverse Town when Sora visited it at the end of DDD. I think it can exist in both realms at the same time similar to how Mysterious Tower can move around, the worlds in the Realm Between have their own rules. So the Dream Eaters could live separately in the dream version during KH1. The sleeping Traverse Town seemed to exist as a refuge for the Dream Eaters and then the TWEWY characters which is why it had all the Shibuya and Dream Eater theming. But the reason I thought some of the organization members or Dandelions could've ended up there at some point is because of Ienzo's line in DDD when Axel is searching for Isa and Braig after recompleting.

Maybe Luxord arrived in Traverse Town because he wouldn't have a home to return to in the Realm of Light if he's from Quadratum.

That kind of worries me. In a weird way, I don’t want him to be in better spirits. Terra, Aqua, and Ventus have mountains of trauma. It’s disturbing how much pain they’ve been through, especially Terra and Aqua. None of it was really explored or dealt with. Now they’re just fine? That’s kind of a waste. I’m sure we could get interesting stories of them dealing with the pain and guilt. Riku’s long redemption is one of the best parts of Kingdom Hearts, in my opinion. But it’s not like they could start up a therapy session with Riku right then; they were about to do a mission and needed to stay focused. Who knows how they really feel, but I’m worried that they dealt with their personal demons off screen. The unreality stuff with Sora/Yozora is super interesting, but I’m absolutely dying to see what’s going on in the Realm of Light and get an update on those characters.

They could probably give exposition about what's happened in the world before Sora arrived there, no doubt he'll be learning about the place in the prologue and exploring. But Sora seems to be seeing things from a civilian POV and they positioned him in Shibuya while Yozora was in Shinjuku's government district in the secret ending. And we know Yozora is a commander in the military so that aspect of Quadratum might be something they save for Verum Rex, if there is some kind of war going on. Alternatively maybe we return to Quadratum at the end of 4 and get involved in the political stuff more.

Dark Road seemed pretty self-contained. It does expand on Darkness and Vanitas a little but nothing that couldn't probably be explained in a future game. They also killed pretty much every new character they introduced so unless they reincarnated in Quadratum like those Young Xehanort theories it seems like a closed case. Maybe the lesser Darkness thing will be relevant like the ones that grew inside Baldr and the Queen of Hearts but then they could just introduce new Disney villains in 4 and they have shadows behind them. UX has already had a decent impact because Strelitzia is front and center in the KH4 trailer and by extension the new saga is literally named after the Lost Masters. There's the Subject X mystery too which is tied up with Lea and Isa. Other things like the True Dandelion I'm not as sure about. Some mysteries from UX could be wrapped up in Missing Link before they reach any console game. Missing Link does connect to 4 though according to Nomura. And Sigurd narrates 4's trailer with an older and younger voice I think so he could be the one character from that to carry over.

They really do have a ton of psychological baggage. The closest we get to exploring that is Aqua in 0.2 with her phantom and then after she experiences even more trauma becoming Anti-Aqua we see her hallucinate a swam of Anti-Aquas in Remind. She's not alright. And Ventus lost his memories twice, Xehanort abused him and rendered him mute before palming him off on Eraqus. And that's not getting into the mobile stuff where he blamed himself for killing Strelitzia.

With Ventus I think we are guaranteed more with him because he's a Dandelion and Vanitas/Darkness still sleeps inside him. Hopefully that means Aqua and Terra will be involved and they'll have to face up to their fears when facing True Darkness who can really fuck with your mind. And then they can overcome it in the way Riku did with Ansem through Chain of Memories and onward. Terra and Aqua probably being born in Scala means they could show up there to back up Mickey. I mean they are the last of Eraqus' line. Xehanort is dead. Who is left? I assume Scala isn't completely abandoned yet but still maybe Terra and Aqua could be relevant there too as successors to blueblood Eraqus.

I don't really expect that we'll be getting too much into the politics of Quadratum. Nomura said himself that Quadratum will be less similar to Versus than people think, and Kingdom Hearts is more about different philosophies and doesn't really concern itself with that stuff.

I doubt the worldbuilding will be as vast as something like Versus XIII/XV with all the geopolitical stuff. There's not even an indication there's anything of interest outside of Quadratum itself yet. The conflict Yozora's involved with might be more rooted in urban warfare so it's closer to something like TWEWY where it's contained to Tokyo. But a big part of Versus XIII/XV was that a lot of the world was a wasteland devastated by war, not unlike Midgar's wasteland too. So Quadratum could be one of the last ordinary looking places left that hasn't been reduced to ruin because they're isolationists or something. I think that was a thing with Daybreak Town too iirc. That a lot of the world had already begun being blanketed in darkness and it was one of the last worlds to go, so they could echo that and do a post-apocalypse type thing. Maybe Yozora and co fight the Gigas to gather KARMA like the keykids gathered guilt which brings them the pain in their hearts etc. and the Lost Masters arrival in Quadratum heralds it's end.

So they don't need to go too big on worldbuilding. Geographically Quadratum seems identical to Tokyo so the rest of the world might be like ours too, that might be what they're getting at with the AR map of Earth in Missing Link. But if we say it's post-apocalypse we're not missing much and doesn't necessarily need a full game's worth of backstory then.

Demyx and Luxord were two of my favorite members outside of the trio they were always fun to interact with. And they got some time to shine in 3 as well. Mainly Luxord. But Demyx was great whenever he was on screen too.
