not that anon but what is your lipuzzle rating?
>>
>>507458614
I see limited value in training very hard puzzles that take 15+ minutes to solve. I tried that once and made no improvements over the course of four months. I went back to easier puzzles I should be able to get in 5 minutes mostly. That helped more. If i compare the tactics i actually find in games vs the ones i solve in puzzles, the complexity gap between the too should be so massive. So very slow increase in puzzle difficulty is the plan.
>>
>>507460018
Taking that long is bad if you can't think of a single idea that might work, but if you can already "sort of see something" and you just need to calculate things precisely then these hard puzzles can be a great training tool for visualizing patterns several moves in advance

the danish is comfy as shit bros. Unless you play into it black is always pretty much just worse. You only need to memorize one long line if your opponent decides to be cute. Every move is really intuitive and 9/10 times your opponent will straight up crumble under the pressure.
It's just brute force calculation.
Any other sharp gambits that heavily railroad your opponent into playing them if they want to keep their advantage that don't require a lot of theory?
>>
>>507459158
2500 something

>>507460018
That's exactly what I do. I give myself 10 minutes and try to see the idea (this helps with time management) I find "something," and then I see if it works by calculating the possibilities. I mean, I like doing puzzles, but yeah, they are getting harder now.

I tried to play with a novelty set like this once. It's surprisingly hard to calculate when the piece type isn't plainly obvious from all angles. Towards the middle game I stopped looking at the board and tried to do all calculations in my mind.

> just do tactics for a year and reach 2500 blitz
This doesn't sound like something that actually happens
Maybe adults who do a bunch of tactics, get a high provisional rating (like 2200 tops) and then decide that their 'true strength' is 2500, but of course they won't play and prove it because of cheaters etc.

It's possible for midwits to do well in academic or "intellectual" careers purely on the back of studying, the reason that doesn't translate to chess is because chess is both a science and an art and there's too much room for intuition. You can convince the world you're not a midwit through career and education but not through chess, if you actually are one. Stepjan's main problem has always been that no matter how much he studies theory, once he's actually over the board he just doesn't have that extra something to see good moves on his own, and starts making random "reasonable" moves.
>>
>>507483974
Pleb take. Only midwits can't appreciate compositions
>>
>>507484302
Wrong. The reason Stjepan hasn't improved is because he's an NPC.
>>
You only have a chance as an adult improver if you play gambits and try to brute force the game via tactics, we've seen this over and over again.

I generally agree with this but it depends on who composed it and what kind of thought went in to it. If you play the chess com daily you're going to run in to a lot of feel good garbage composed by their resident hack. He loves creating problems where, with best play, you win material and a clear advantage. Instead he sets it up so it's just mate in 3. I used to play the daily every day there. The hack composer stole my time on too many problems, calculating long lines and checking for complications only for the puzzle to just roll over and die when I actually put moves on the board.

I complained about this several times in their comments section. An army of apologists always converged to explain that actually composing like this is acceptable, is not lazy, my time is not being wasted because calculating all that stuff was good educational exercise, and that com daily puzzles are truly peak quality at all times.
>>
>>507487947
See here this is a good composed puzzle for advanced beginners and low intermediates. It's 1300 tempo (around 1800 lipuzzle or so), nothing wild. Satisfying. You solve it in a minute or two and you think "that was slick".

>You can convince the world you're not a midwit through career and education but not through chess, if you actually are one.
Then why are most supergms midwits? The only smart 2700+ players are Anand, Aronian and Giri. The rest are trained monkeys and idiot savants. You can't convince me that someone like Keymer is genuinely intelligent.
>>507518071

>>
>>507532270
>It's great if you're good at playing against sirslop
the problem is how often they cheat not their openings, it's even worse in arenas since you get matched with "overperforming" low rated players
>Then why are most supergms midwits?
It was said in the context of adult improvers and even then I think most gms are above average intelligence, not super geniuses like popculture portraits them but fairly smart, for example magnus seems like the ultimate normie but he has a godlike memory and seemingly very good business sense, Fabi comes across as very rational and objective if you listen to his podcast
I wonder why you picked those names specifically though Giri acts like a clown and we know very little of keymer outside of chess

Opinions on open ruy vs schliemann? Kinda fed up with the closed
>>
>>507541978
Nta but I've been considering getting into the Schliemann because it seems like it's even further from the closed than the open Ruy. And in any case the closed Ruy is such a pain in the ass, you just get rolled if white knows more theory.
>>
>>507541978
I've played both. The Schliemann is more tactical, but a little less sound than the Open Spanish. If you like crazy positions, go for the Schliemann. Also another reason to go for the Schliemann is to avoid the Exchange, Anderssen, Wormald, etc, so in that regard the Schliemann is more forcing.

low level players are always inconsistent and their performance depends heavily on mood, concentration, whether they're actively tryharding or just playing to relax, whether they get into a familiar position etc. you can play for tricks a lot of the time and players will vary widely in terms of their knowledge.

You like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

God gave me a holly jolly Christmas me lads, so I'll share some knowledge with you.

--
There are five kinds of mental modifications which are either painful or painless.

They are right knowledge, misconception, verbal delusion, sleep, and memory.

The sources of right knowledge are direct perception, inference, and scriptural testimony.

Misconception occurs when knowledge of something is not based upon its true form.

An image that arises on hearing mere words without any reality [as its basis] is verbal delusion.

That mental modification supported by cognition of nothingness is sleep.

When a mental modification of an object previously experienced and not forgotten comes back to consciousness, that is memory.

These mental modifications are restrained by practice and non-attachment.

Of these two, effort toward steadiness of mind is practice.

https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?playercomp=black&pid=49796&eco=C63&title=Radjabov+playing+Ruy+Lopez,+Schliemann+Defense+

As far as gambits go, it's a fairly respectable gambit. Stockfish gives equality for black in the mainlines. A lot of lines lead to forced draws too, which might be why it's avoided at the top.

I might seriously do it next year if none of the big guys steps up, the most bothersome thing is that he asks for a lichess account and games to analyze so to properly troll him it would need to make an account and play a bunch of rapid games pretending to be a megashitter which is a lot of effort( If someone here has an old account or an alt below 1700lirapid he doesn't mind sharing the password of, that would be the best solution) I also don't have a mic other than the laptop's built in one or any experience recording anything so I would have to make tests which is even more effort, also also I thought the 50€ thing was just shitposting what the fuck? his "students" are the biggest retards on the planet unbelievable

This Christmas has been a reality-shattering experience for many of us gay chess players as we grapple with the harsh truth that corporate marketing often masquerades as genuine support. The bright colors the inclusive advertisements and the empty promises felt like a warm embrace only to reveal themselves as hollow gestures that ultimately leave us feeling isolated and alone. It’s disheartening to realize that for all the fanfare these corporations often don’t truly care about our struggles and joys. Yet amidst this disillusionment I found solace in the authenticity of Levy, who has consistently shown that he genuinely care about chess and us. His heartfelt engagement and commitment to uplift voices like ours have turned what could have been a lonely Christmas into a reminder that true connection exists beyond the corporate facade. It’s these moments of genuine support that light up the darkness reminding us that we are not alone in our journeys.

Unfathomably based. Nice too see a fellow basedball enjoyer in the thread

I always like to tell normies that Jose Raul Capablanca played college baseball and was a connoisseur of the game. They usually don’t care, but I like to share.

Go Twins
>>
If chess players were intelligent they'd be doing something else than play chess. Checkmate
I know I would. Smarter than average monkey sure but not smart enough for useful stuff.
>>
>>507558084
every time i share the "secret", people just assume i'm trolling because it's so counter-intuitive and goes against everything they've heard or think the game is about. i also explain why common training methods like puzzles are useless beyond demonstrating the initial concept/idea of a certain tactic, but again, even when i explain the reasoning, it's hard for people to even entertain the idea because of course you need to do puzzles bro, it's common heckin sense. and that "common sense" is exactly why most people either quit or get mediocre results, you have to think outside the box if you want to achieve anything higher than that.
>>
>>507587634
nobody who plays chess thinks you need to be smart to be good at chess
>>
>>507590993
>>507587634
or even that being smart helps with being good at chess
being smart is about being able to understand complicated ideas, literally nothing in chess is complicated AT ALL, it's the equivalent of being able to juggle or ride a unicycle, but instead of training your muscle memory, you've trained your pattern recognition isntead
>>
>>507591172
>Compared to all mental abilities, pattern recognition is said to have the highest correlation with the so-called general intelligence factor (Kurzweil, 2012).
Calculation and visualization are obviously easier for high iq people too
Yes any idiot can get good at chess by amateur standards, see stjepan, but an intelligent person can do it much easier than a dumb one

I apologize. I should have known better, and I know that. It was very dumb to think anything otherwise, and time should have told me that. But I was excited, and foolish. How dare I think Ding would ever successfully defend his title. My Ding? MY DING?!?! now I know better. You could have God himself and a prime Bobby Fischer as seconds and Ding would still find a way to blow it up in an excellent fashion. I’ve tried everything related to making excuses for Ding. I'm out of sticks. I'm out of rocks. Boo on this so called world champion and all of the fake faith you have given the people who so retardedly root for you. I'm out. And I will never, ever, have a good word to say about you ever again. You reap what you sow, and I hope all of your children hate you for being such a failure. Well, I'm most annoyed when he interrupts guests on his podcast with dumb questions. But he comes off as a dumb normalfag whenever he talks about something unrelated to chess. I don't mean in this a rude way. There's a bunch of other shit too that I'm not going to bother listing; just listen to any of his podcasts and you'll understand what I mean.
If you start playing at a young enough age, chess sort of compartmentalizes itself in your brain in the same way a language does. That's why why kids - regardless of their intelligence - are able to pick up and become fluent in a language through natural exposure.

Chirila is a very strange case for me in this regard. To me he presents as a standard dude, kind of dude I might work with or attended some elective in college with. Not particularly smart or notably stupid. Social. Attractive. Line of girlfriends over the years. Then I try to parse this with the fact that Cristian is a GM. A weak one but that's still a fuck hard title to get. Standard dudes don't make GM. His closest peer is probably Aman Hambleton and, at least to me, Aman has more of the subtle quirks I expect of GMs. Aman is a little nutty if you dig past the presentable exterior. Even further to the point, Chirila somehow stumbled in to a position as second for one of the strongest GMs of this generation. How did he even get that job?

It's like this guy just succeeds over and over by accident and lucky circumstance.
>>
There’s a reason the proportion of strong chess players in different ethnic groups reflects what you’d expect based on iq.

He's just trying to do whatever is expected of him by whoever arranged for him to make this video some ten years ago. I don't think Magnus is really hyping the problem here. Anyway, it is still slick. Would give 5 stars on chesstempo.

More like just reflects the money state puts in. Like when Soviet wanted to appear intelligent they poured money into chess and surprise got a lot of good chess players. Money ran out and no more new chess players there.
Same for current China and India. New players come in due to big state sponsorship. Western countries only ones who don't have big state funding for chess.
>>
>>507645784
what the hell i saw it in like 5 seconds
>>
>>507645784
I saw this instantly because saccing in order to mate with knight and rook is my favourite pattern.
>>
>>507642235
I see people here say this all the time, but do you realise how many people played chess as kids and didn't get good? Millions. For every kid that became a GM, there are millions who didn't, so to say "just start young" is BS. A guy at my club started playing chess at 4 years old and his rating topped out at 2100 FIDE. His parents wanted him to become a champion, but he couldn't even get a CM title. He had coaches, trainers and all sorts of other resources. According to people like you, he should be world champ, right? It's just as easy as starting as a kid..

>Guy has over 350 games of rapid and stuggles can't break 1000 fucking lirapid but is 2k bullet
What the FUCK is up with this shit? Everybody I checked had rapid ratings multiple hundreds lower than mine, like at least 400 lower yet they were BTFO'ing me even in positions I know well (compared to them anyway) I played the Ruy four times and every time a different opponent put their knight on d4 once I put the bishop out. Is it cheating? Or super autism? Explain this shit.
>>
>>507658683
You gotta practise to get better at blitz. Blitz is less about calculating full lines and more about making intuitive moves. You do obviously have to calculate a little bit, but you can't sit there and calculate for almost every turn like you can with rapid. As a general rule: if someone has a better faster time control than their slow time control ratings, they're probably not cheating as it's a little bit more difficult to cheat at bullet, for example, than it is to cheat at rapid. This is the opposite of what you see with people like lordbentham who has a bad blitz rating, but a good rapid rating.
>>
>>507659781
Blitz is about building a balance between playing quick simple moves that just work and setting up potential tactics to pressure your opponent into fucking up.

I remember there was some drama about a year ago (two years?) when magnus refused to play against some dude with german-sounding name and then accused him of cheating, how did that whole story end?

>>507706632
Because it's not easy for me to beat because they play so fast and I don't see it often so I have to take time to think about what to do.

Magnus paid him off so he didn't get sued and then the German sounding guy crushed a bunch more top players proving he wasn't a cheater, albeit still not at magnus' calibre when they faced off again

>>507718023
So he's still playing? How did everyone just forgive magnus for such a disrespectful chimpout then
>>
>>507718424
Because Niemann still cheated online and is a sociopath.

>>507718424
Because he's the best player in the world and it's not close, he's rich and basically owns and controls the biggest chess networks, and people believed magnus for a year or so and thought Hans was a cheater, when Hans proved himself the drama had more or less fizzled out
>>
>>507718424
Because the german had a history of online cheating and his game against Magnus did look a bit questionable. General opinion was that Magnus was at least partly justified in doing what he did.

This is the format that he has been trying to promote over classical chess. Everyone tries to say that he is still the world’s strongest player because he is the best at the rapid and blitz formats. Regardless of whether or not that is true, it will hurt his image if he doesn’t win this championship, especially because he is no longer dealing with the pressure of defending the classical world title

This may just be exposing myself as an autistic retard but do different openings give you a certain "feeling" of being in its unique setting?

>play Dutch: it's like I'm in a park setting
>play London: it's like an outdoor industrial setting
>play English: it's like I'm in a field
>play KID and its like im in a boxing ring

That's not super accurate but the closest I can explain it. Its not like I see theses places, but perhaps just feels like im in it. Anyone else?

>>
>>507759838
It's checkmate in 2 but 50 moves were played without a capture or a pawn move meaning its a draw by "the 50 move rule". With even one more move, hikaru would have captured the rook, resetting the 50 moves, and its mate on the next move. But it's automatically a draw instead, even though the opponent is being checkmated on the board
>>
>>507753870

This is a positive sign in my own autistic opinion. You are forming connections to more abstract concepts, which is a good thing. This is like how a smell can remind you of a certain time in your life.

>>507762226
Yeah it's weird. It's not like I see these places but it's a feeling like I'm there. But yeah, makes sense.
>>
>>507762538
It’s not a controversial rule. The longest endgame to win is knight and bishop vs king which I think can be done in 40 moves or so.
Bishop and rook vs rook is an objective draw, the player just got in trouble in the end

>>507739707
Ahahahaha there are few things more satisfying in the chess world than Hikki getting swindled out of wins

now i think about it, could you play it out then challenge it with arbiters afterwards if you didnt realize it hit 50 moves?

Day two of playing superblitz because I love being tilted and it's won by a new account with under 900 blitz rating. A great addition to the guy who won yesterday who had 2000 bullet rating, 1200 blitz, and 900 rapid. I'm convinced blitz isn't even chess at this point, it's just watching some youtube video and memorising it and playing it as quick as you can because there's no way you can be literal beginner tier at rapid yet 2000 bullet or 1300 blitz, even if it is lichess.

Fide rules say:

9.3 The game is drawn, upon a correct claim by a player having the move, if:

9.3.1 he/she indicates his/her move, which cannot be changed, by writing it on the paper scoresheet or entering it on the electronic scoresheet and declares to the arbiter his/her intention to make this move which will result in the last 50 moves by each player having been made without the movement of any pawn and without any capture, or

9.3.2 the last 50 moves by each player have been completed without the movement of any pawn and without any capture.

Meaning that you could claim draw at any point during the game where the preceding 50 moves satisfy the rule even if it's been more than 50 moves without capture or pawn move, but once there is a pawn move or capture, the counter gets reset and you can't claim draw anymore.
It's not like illegal moves where the position can get reset to the state before the move because not claiming a 50 move draw (or a threefold repetition) isn't illegal.
>>507787661
Whoa that desperate flailing and attempts at setting up something a 1200 might fall for reminds me of my games.
>>507789759
>His highest rated opponent was 2530 rapid everyone else was below 2500, no one said he isn't a 2600gm
The results still show him punching above his weight class. Protip: if you want to see how well someone is performing, check their performance rating in that tournament.
>>
>>507794070
You need to train blitz specifically. I went from 1400 to 1800 liblitz (still dogshit but whatever) without improving my rapid rating.
>>
>>507794119
>Meaning that you could claim draw at any point during the game where the preceding 50 moves satisfy the rule even if it's been more than 50 moves without capture or pawn move, but once there is a pawn move or capture, the counter gets reset and you can't claim draw anymore.
i more meant if you could lose a blitz game then check the scoresheet and realize it was actually won on the 51st move since last capture, and dispute it with arbiters to get it turned into a draw
>>
>>507794234
Obviously not. You can't claim 50 move draw retroactively even when the game is still going, so there's no reason you'd be able to claim it after it's finished.

As a gay chess player I often find myself navigating a double-edged sword of stress. Playing chess on the board can be incredibly intense; the pressure to make the right moves, anticipate my opponent's strategies, and maintain focus is overwhelming at times. But then there's the stress of being a gay chess player off the board where societal expectations and the fear of judgment can weigh heavily. Thankfully, I draw inspiration from the amazing role models in the professional chess community. Just as I expand my chess repertoire by studying the games of grandmasters, I also find ways to broaden my social repertoire by observing how they navigate their own identities and challenges. Their success and courage help me cope with my own stress reminding me that both the chessboard and life are about strategy, resilience, and the beauty of being true to oneself.

What do you think about Stoyko exercises?

>Find a fairly complicated position
>Get out a pen/pencil and paper
>You have unlimited time
>Write down every (pertinent) line for as deep as you can see, making sure to include an evaluation at the end of the line. This will likely include dozens of lines and several first ply candidate moves.
>At the end state which move you would play and it’s “best play for both sides” line becomes the PV
>When you are done, go over each line and its evaluation with a strong player and/or a computer. Look for lines/moves you should have analyzed but missed, any errors in visualization (retained images, etc.), any lines where you stopped analyzing too soon, thus causing a big error in evaluation (quiescence errors), any large errors in evaluation of any line, whether the above caused you to chose the wrong move etc.
