Falcom somehow still hasn't learned that RPGs work best when they tell a self contained story. Yes, ongoing continuity is fine, but each entry needs to have a proper beginning middle and end. Sky 1, 2, and 3 each had a story to tell and told it even though they each ended on cliffhangers. Zero and Azure did the same. Cold Steel fucked this up by not having the primary conflict resolved by the end of 1, so you HAVE to play 2 to finish the story. Just makes you feel like you wasted your time and money.

Ok then, I think Ys IX has a way better cast and pacing, it explores better themes and the story feels a lot more personal to Adol and to you as a player who finished all his prior adventures. I also liked the way character arcs were handled, the farewell was not as emotional as Ys 8 ending, but close enough. OST is better and I liked a more contained setting of Balduq, despite it looking rather bad from the design standpoint, but then again Obelia Gulf looks way worse and it consists of shitty looking islands. Like I said the only thing X has over IX is combat, it's feels better and is way more fun and engaging than in IX, but that's it. Ys X characters (aside from Adol and Karja) did nothing for me, their character arcs were boring and short, the game solely concentrates on Adol and Karja and doesn't give enough screentime for me to care about others. The plot is forgettable and the setting is dull. OST is the worst in the series.
