If you want to get all the rewards in events and harder content then you'll need to build teams that make sense, but that's not a problem, you can do that by matching the 4* characters that you'll eventually get for free with whatever 5* characters you like.

So no, you don't need meta characters but they make it easier.

In terms of standard 5* weapons, I think the order of priority is usually Sword > Gun > Everything else (according to what you need at the time). The best characters from the standard pool is probably verina and then anko, so go for them. As usual for any gachas, the most efficient dollar-to-astrite package in the shop is the monthly.Getting the BP is worth it if you wanna spend money on ascension mats and shells.>What past and future characters I should get in terms of account strength?Well there's Jinhsi, Camellya, and Changli for DPS (in order of importance).Then there's Yinlin and Jeji for sub-dps. Don't discount 4* characters, you can clear end-game content with them if you get them with sufficient dupes. Sanhua, Chixia, Lumi, and Danjin (and maybe Mortefi) are probably some of the strongest 4* in the game so far. All in all, overall character strenghts in the game are spread out horizontally and with enough investment you can clear all end-game content with any characters.
