The genre or theme or whatever you want to call space games is cursed fundamentally
99% of them suffer horrendously from scope creep and those that don't are probably permanently in dev by like 5 guys and running on an outdated game engine that's as old as the game itself.
Much like how we can't mentally grasp how big the universe actually is, space games can't into fitting such a thing into the limited space of a videogame. Games are supposed to eventually end, but space is practically infinite. It stands to reason that it is impossible to make a really good space game simply because you have to cut it off eventually. Some use proc gen to simulate that infinite nature of space but even that is extremely limited and unfulfilling.
There are precious few that get close to greatness but they always have to limit something in order to not take an average human lifetime to make, by then the tech it was made with has long since been left behind

Starsector is one of my favorite games and I think it's nearly perfect. Space strategy games that focus on empire building are often too bloated. MoO1 is good because it's concise but the problem I have with it is that it is too focussed on conflict. Distance factors in this too it should be very costly and difficult to cross or govern over large distances. Space is big why even go to the trouble of taking something when there is enough empty space for everyone.

At this point the event chain would be more meaningful if it had any relevance to what was happening in game. This screenshot does show off two things: the number of divisions per army is normally capped at 24. I haven't played the vanilla game at all so I don't know if this is a carryover from that.
However, for certain 'hero' generals, the unit cap is 6. This makes micromanagement a giant pain, on top of the worst-in-a-decade interface the game already has.

This is when I reloaded the game from an earlier save, because it turns out using up all your manpower on one continent is not a good strategy.
This time I disbanded most of my divisions for manpower and invaded Australia first. Australia is easily defensible, like in Risk, and the resources in the area are disproportionate to the effort it takes to get them.

At this point the bottleneck isn't numbers but attention span and AI. Supposedly there is a very good front system that automates this. I have not seen it work myself.
It doesn't help that the enemy can tear your lines open across an entire continent and there is NOTHING to tell you this.

I'm playing it right now and my main gripe is how weak the gods are at the start. These supposed divinities are barely stronger than common soldiers. I think your basic Warcraft III heroes felt stronger compared to common troops. Also the game refers to them as "heroes" when they die. Does it mean there are going to be heroes other than gods?

This is the mod's biggest problem, aside from the game it's based on: you can blob across literal continents on a Genghis Khan scale in days and yet you are nowhere close to winning.
HoI4 was based around WWII scales, it doesn't expect you to do world conquests as a minimum victory condition.

Also, the one thing the mod doesn't tell you:
the Federation has multiple ports from the space to ground map that work like teleporting, and they also control the space map. That means that they can teleport their entire army anywhere they want and the only way to stop them is to either take all of the spaceport locations or conquer Earth orbit. Neither of these are very difficult but the game doesn't tell you any of it, meanwhile the enemy will magically shift their entire army across the entire globe.

Size of the map. Systems and the galaxy are really big in DW2. Number of stars might roughly be the same but because of the size it is really difficult to get from one end to the other. Early game most empires are isolated because of the huge distances. The combat in DW2 is also better I think. Ships have fixed weapon slots but they all come with their own firing arc making ships or shipsets suited for different combat styles.

What stellaris has over DW is probably that the factions and quests are more moldable. It's easier to project your own fantasy on them. Stellaris is also better suited to create your own empires from the different building blocks the game gives the player. It's also very nice that lot's of the 'wonders' you can build in Stellaris are actual space structutes you can see in the game, rather than some 2d art in a planet menu. The soundtrack of stellaris is also a lot better I think.

Scaling is very different.
Remember how in Stellaris you could have battleships that are bigger than some planets? Not in DW2.
Also, there are no star lanes, everything works on warp travel.
Also you have the whole fuel economy to worry about, ships can't travel beyond their maximum fuel capacity and need to refuel from time to time.
Also you must mine the fuel and build stations that can provide said fuel to ships. Your civilian ships will also burn fuel.

It could be that it works like Sword of the stars where you automatically purge ayy lmaos if you don't understand their language, or it could be the aliens on conquered worlds just become alien citizens to your empire.
I think it works more like the latter, I at least recall there being alien pops on alien planets I conquered.

This is false. Flak is useless and wasted slots until you go up against missiles or strike craft. AI tend to mix their loadouts enough this is still a safe bet, but human players can just counter it by skipping out by just dropping another laser in and out damaging you

This was solved over two years ago. Space fauna shook it up, but now bioships will crack the meta wide open. I'll laugh if basic bitch ships are still king

Stellaris had a decent Corvette balance metagame
2 laser 1 flak beats 3 missile spam
3 lasers beats the 2-1 balance
3 missiles beats the 3 lasers due to shield bypass and better accuracy of missiles at the beginning of the game

All this is to bide time and tech up for shit like better lasers and bigger ship designs. No one is using mass drivers, so no one is upgrading their flak. Engineering is the most important research because it's an arms race to survice until you unlock cruisers. On the physics side, you want disruptors. AI players get fucked by disruptors early/midgame. Disruptor spam will melt them, and most human builds, until they slap on hardening modules to neuter your disruptors by forcing them to chew through armor/shields. A smart guy could also put together like a missile cruiser to out range disruptors and kite all over the fucking solar system
Star bases are meaty enough to laugh at disruptors but that's where your frigates come in. Just spec them purely to assfuck star bases. Drop them once you have cruisers. Strike craft cruisers can just park out of range and practically siege them. Destroyers are decent at taking damage, and loading flak, but you'll have little use for them outside flak pickets once cruisers roll in

I don't care if something here is outdated, I took a break for a long fucking time from Stellaris and I'll only touch it again to keep making funny alien megacorps to mess with my friend

A little detail that was missed. The same alloy cost implies you're not using blue lasers
Blue lasers are the bare minimum research needed to guarantee fucking up your first neighbor and kicking them in the nuts. You take that, and immediately start planning a war with the first dude you see. Why blue lasers? Because it's on the path to disruptors, and your engineering research is spent on propulsion and bigger ships. If you get UV lasers early instead, you can still laugh and melt everything so long as you don't run into anything shield heavy
AI will not follow any solved meta, it will just research whatever, but will do it way faster than you if you're playing on a higher difficulty. That's why you want to stab your neighbor as soon as you research a weapon tech that helps you to do that, steal their land, then snowball. Using physics for your ship weapons is just the most convenient path. Using tier 1 flak early is still good paired with tier 2 lasers, if your enemy is using missiles it can save a lot of grief, and ships.
Does this all seem extremely autistic? That's because it is. Just know that more autistic people solved this for us over a year ago. It's not worth caring about unless you're fighting high difficult AI or god forbid, competitive Stellaris multiplayer

Flak gives 100% damage to the shield (or just 75% if you include the penetration). This is why 1 shield 2 armour beat 2 shields 1 armour in the same alloy cost.
I play in GA; since I met a federation enemy who has a 5K fleet each in 2212, I gave up and played admiral. I hate luck-based gameplay.
I tested autistically blue laser vs red laser.
The red laser is better because the earlier you can rush, the better. I watched the MP tournament, and it seems 2212 is when someone started to spam ships.
So killing overpowered origins in 2209 with red laser is better than doing it in 2213 with blue laser.
I will test it again later to make sure.
You forgot the society research which give 100 ship starting experience (+10% damage).

I still can't believe that after all this time we still can't fucking terraform the Bedrock/Tunnel tiles in AOW 4. It's by far the one thing fucking up any underground run and it's maddening. It's literally the one thing that would fix all the problems players have been complain about since day 1. Have they ever stated a reason for not changing it? The new Dungeon tome is really cool and I love the idea of it. But it's so fucking hard to get any good cities down there besides your starting capital due to so much non-occupiable terrain. Do I really have to mod the game to fix this?

Blue laser is also bad in the early game because 4 pops you use to research means 4 pops less for alloy production. Researching blue laser mean you have 10 less ships.
blue laser wins against red laser when it is 3 ships different (42 blue laser vs 39 red laser). Below that, red laser win. 10% damage from ship experience from society research not even worth 1 ship because damage bonuses are already high (no retreat +33%, militarist ethic +10%, commander level and skill, excess power, etc).
So +10% damage is just +2% or something.

Theres a basic bitch alignment system as a relic of older AoW games but it still helps measure up how many war crimes you committed next to your neighbor. It's not hard to get to pure evil.
Chaos affinity has plenty of options to give incentive and reward for a good old pillage. Trashing cities gets you extra population as one unlockable feature I think
And pillaging provinces is apparently an evil act, so i just naturally assume whatever midgets I'm leading that day are committing the wholesome tradition of burn and rape

You're still thinking in 2D. Pieces here are no longer restricted to left right up down. Alternate timelines are essentially 1 square away, so the knight there moves 2 up and 1 "sideways" into that timeline. If that knight was where the white pawn or king was, it wouldn't be mate because it can't reach the black king. It might help if you imagine it like a 3D box, where each square is a cube and each board is stacked on top of each other. Quite the odd game, because I never quite figured it out: you have limited manpower, no clue how to get more people, and since objects move around, your starting asteroid slowly drifts away.

And also I remember ordering a giant capital ship to ram a smaller ship, and it exploded and died. Then again, I had no fucking idea what I was doing because I barely spoke English then.

There's enough houses down right now that when the wall's finished it can upgrade to a capacity of like 120 people in medium density. I'm gonna try and keep the actual town itself small as I can. The last section of wall is waiting for me to build a tavern/inn. Other than that it's all just waiting for trade to make me enough money to buy up the surrounding tiles so I can push out to things like wheat farming.

The game really builds in complexity the more you get into it. You can just fly around. You can hunt pirates, bully the factions, fight aliens, etc. You could do it alone or buy a fleet of ships. You can trade alone, or buy a fleet of trade ships.

Or you can go balls to the wall. Build huge factory space stations complete with long production chains, supply them with raw minerals mined from asteroids. Build your own warships and take over entire sectors.
It's a shame that when you do this, you do have to look at the ugly map most of the time.

I don't know too much about nature builds right now. Been trying out underground stuff and seeing what synergize with the Dungeon tome. I ran nature builds near the game's release, and I like the city buffing stuff a lot, and their empire development options. But animal units don't feel that rewarding
That tier five tome to give everyone nature damage crit and blight across the board is neat, but you either have to go full plant or full dragons.
Maybe dragons is more viable for solid nature than animals

dungeon is really good
my go-to is primal spiders, tome of discipline (Focus aim is good, as is empowered strikes; Mantra of purification is good too), enchantment, dungeon tome, whatever, then tier 3 you can grab the dreadnaught book and get a SPI that grants +2 ranks to recruited constructs.
With a smith's guild and a rank 4 recruit governer, you can get champion (+1 range on arblests) tier 3 units and pump one out every turn.
My actual problem is finding a decent support for them, but they can get so tanky with the Legion passive + leadership abilities that you can almost skimp out on healing.
You *can* skimp out once you hit tome of prosperity with Blessed Armor but you gotta figure out a way to sneak in some extra affinities to unlock it

Feels very hit or miss. Vostroyans and Praetorian Guard are meh, but I like the Steel Regiment and I utterly love the new Imperial Guard.
Some factions like the Mechanicus or the Daemons are a bit shit because of their morale-reliant mechanics, making them weak to snipers and flamethrowers, and while I really like the Imperial Fist, I am very confused that their ultimate building is Ghostbuster's Michelin Man.

A lot of decisions are very, very strange, too, like resurrecting the Shogunate insurgency, but giving them anime characters.
Or sneak in references to the Pact of Blood but not making them playable?

It's really fun! And I do enjoy just minding my own business down there most of the time. Currently I am trying out Primal-Spider culture with a heavy emphasis on Food and a bit of materium going for huge Mushroom/Dungeon tiles.

The Feudal rework is really neat too. The only thing I still wish we had gotten was some way to remove Bedrock using the final tomes

And about the AI settling in stupid ways, I had one settle and outpost and make a City only able to expand a single tile being surrounded by my borders.. Glad to hear im not the only one having fun though!

My first new underground run was with some Industrial dorfs, picked a Rock Giant ruler, was somehow parked right next to the crystal dwelling, and things got crazy quick with booming production. I stacked half the Materium transformations and REALLY liked the new upgrade in the tier 5 tome affecting elementals if you become crystal dudes
It had synergy with constructs too, so that makes me really want to try a similar run with more war machines and not depend as much on stacking racial TF bonuses. That'll probably be a Reaver run for me. Reavers seem a bit underdeveloped now compared to other cultures, but I just wanna try the gun faction again

The term feels like it doesn't do it justice. It's like the fun, exciting part at the beginning of a 4x where you're scoping out the landscape and getting settled, but before everything gets permanently locked in and you have to toil to the finish line. I never knew how much I wanted that until now.

For a lot of builders the fun part is in the beginning. The struggle of getting a place set up. Afterwords it starts to feel like work and maintenance doesn't feel as rewarding. This isn't true of them all but a lot of them end up feeling that way.

Very true. Some people seem to have a knack for putting every single little piece together into a cohesive whole in their games, but getting to the point where that's the only thing to really focus on just kills the enjoyment for me. Hey, that's very racist against hoburgs bro. Then again, killing 500 hoburgs was the easy part, killing 17 fucking Ents needed durable tanks, lots of healing/armor+ spells and a fire mage. The clockworks were easier pickings. I'm curious how someone would beat that using a faction like the Baron though, he only has lvl 2 spellcasters and normal squishy frontliners.
