I'm confused by MAKA's recommendation here because it conflicts with advice I've been given in this thread. >>521120617It isn't that at all. Like I said, it has nothing to do with tile tables or anything like that, it's aa simple understanding of how hands work. The most basic of basic rule for safe tiles is that if you discard a tile in their pool, they physically cannot ron it because they would be in furiten even if it was their tile. Step 2 after that is to think about how hands work. Most of the time, you're either going to be in a single wait, or what's called an edge wait. Edge waits are when you are trying to complete a chi, for example, if you have 45 as your last set, you'll be waiting for either a 3 or a 6. Ergo, if you see that there's a 3 in their discard, and you don't have a reason to think otherwise, you can aaassume that the 6 is also probably safe, because again, they'd be in furiten. There are more and more rules that you caan learn, but just start with those. Also keep in mind that if anyone else discards a tile and it passes, then unless someone else enters tempai or the original player changes their wait, which they can't do in richi without calling a kan, then that tile is still safe.

I'm confused by MAKA's recommendation here because it conflicts with advice I've been given in this thread. I was told I need to connect three X's in a row to win at tic-tac-toe. Here, as shown on the left, I started with X1 in the top left, the opponent subsequently played center O1, and I followed with X2 in the bottom left corner to make 2 out of the 3 in a row I need to win. It seems MAKA clearly prefers to place X2 in the bottom right corner. However, this does not advance me toward my goal of getting a 3-in-a-row, since the center of the diagonal is already occupied with my opponent's O1 move. I actually ended up drawing this game, but I do not understand the conflict between MAKA and advice I have been given. How do I look at what I'm doing as a mistake?
