Wrong, the Switch 2 will prevent you from releasing for 2 months. You need /v/ threads for your game and you need them to not get archived so there can be a 30th Ninty thread.

I saw this guy's devlogs over a year ago and the thing that struck me the most was how thoughtless he was. He has stumbled into - not decided - EVERY single idea he wanted to use. He wasn't inspired by one thing or another, he absorbed it like an amorphous blob, and listened to feedback that was very obvious and saying something like "I never thought of anything like that before!"
I just don't get why NPCs have an easier time making games, man. I don't get it.

Yeah I've mentioned something about this issue before. The amount of new people flowing in does not seem to be replacing the ones flowing out, wonder why. It's been like this for a few years yet somehow demo day numbers go up but it feels like there's less games here in the threads.
>>
>>521166504
The character controls and moves look very "any indie platformer" and the lighting looks like "default Unity project"
But the paper and clay aesthetic is really cool.
>>
Did you put a lot of thought into your dev handle and profile picture on social media?
I feel like "[game name]dev" and "[your name]_[game name]" are generic as fuck, soulless, and cheesy.
Do you think the silly pixel cat drawing and name "concerned ape" helped sell shartdew? I feel like it says, "hey heckin' kiddos! I'm inoffensive, I care, and am heckin cozy. Love those cats and being concerned about social issues!"
The vibe his handle gives off suited his game and target audience.
I seriously doubt he would have sold as well if his handle was "nibba_killa_88", something with a less cozy vibe, or a generic "shartdewdev".
Or am I reading too much into this?
Has there been any market research on this?

I've read through blog pages that explain the rational behind blobby tech startup names. Every syllable counts. Every potential subconscious association to something offensive counts.

This will sound silly, but listening to nick rochefort describe a "type" of person bolsters my understanding of the world.

How do the lifetime impressions for your game look? This is for a game released in October of 2024.Only sold ~1500 copies. My capsule art and trailer were very weak, and I completely lacked a strong call to action. I underestimated the value of a CTA. People do what you tell them to do.
If you want wishlists, don't ask, command it.
If you want sales, don't ask, command it.
Don't ask for a wishlist.
Don't ask for a sale.
Tell the user to do it.
WISHLIST NOW!
BUY NOW!
These four words will make or break you. No matter the platform your game is being promoted on, your call to action will determine your success.
People are very malleable.
Tell them what to do. They will do it.

>Not having an identity slows me down by a factor of 100.
bro so much in gamedev and life is like this. If I could be certain of a vision, then actually following through would be inevitable.
Like we all know at least one person who just knew his whole life he wanted to do X, so he went to school and worked to do that.
I've always been indecisive. I have lots of good ideas for games, and even within the one game I've chosen to work on. How do people cut through the gordian knot and suddenly have a firm idea of where they want to go or what they want to make? Or are they just NPCs acting on feeling and not thinking about it? If I knew exactly what I wanted, the rest seems like it would be relatively easy.

These are the lifetime impressions for another game I made. Early 2024. I put much more effort into the capsule art, and the results are apparent. Much higher conversion rate for impression to visits. Not sure exactly what happened in July to boost the visits that much. I think I put the game on sale, or had a big update, or maybe participated in a festival. I don't know.

I've lived as a pseudo-recluse/hikkineet for just about 10 years now. Every extended human-to-human conversation (irl) moves me to tears. Not for any reason other than being seen is emotionally impactful.

Story time:
Winds knocked over my trash can on trash day. The trash truck was just approaching my street. I rushed out to pick up the bags. The trash truck stopped and the trash man got out and helped me pick the bags up. He said "It's the wind that blew the trash can over!". I said "Yeah!". This interaction lasted 15 seconds.

The trash man was a normal guy, and he assumed I was a normal guy. For a week after this, my perception was altered. The taste of the air was different. The experience of viscerally existing as a normal guy in the eyes of a normal guy was a lifechanging buff, until it wore off.

He released with only around 3k wishlists, well below the recommended 7-10k in order to hit New & Trending, and yet he's currently higher up on N&T than where he was when I went to sleep. It's not like he's actively promoting it, and it's not like any streamers or notable youtubers are playing it. It's a good game that normal people are playing, and so it's selling itself entirely via the Steam algorithm.

i think telling indie devs to start off with small games is the best possible advice you can give them, but only because it shows them how important marketing and promotion is if you want people to know your game actually exists
it's better to be a naive fool and release a game with zero promotion if the game only took you 6 months to make, as opposed to 3 years
even if you don't care about money, you'll eventually get sick of having nobody playing the games you put so much effort into, and will naturally become more passionate about gaining exposure for all of your hard work

>spend 6 months making a cool game
>nobody plays it
>repeat
>repeat
>repeat
>okay fuck this
>i don't care about money but spending 2 years making flop after flop sucks
>i want people to actually play the shit i make
>i'm going to learn how to market my game
>oh shit 90% of marketing a game is just designing it to appeal to a specific target demographic
>fuck that i want to make my own games
>what is the last 10% of marketing
>oh it's promotion, shilling your game basically
>how do i do that? just plaster it everywhere and get a bunch of views, exposure, eyeballs, attention, whatever you want to call it
>then have a call to action, tell people to actually go play it, otherwise they'll just look at the promotional content, react to it, go do something else, and then forget about it
>that's how you promote a game? very easy, just be shameless lmao
>wait, how does steam work?
>oh shit all i need to do is have a strong burst of sales within a 2 week period and the steam algorithms will promote my game for me?
>okay, very easy
>wait, is it really that easy?
>why do indie devs struggle with this so much?
because we all secretly feel like our games are bad, and will never be good enough to justify any form of promotion
we keep our games hidden, refusing to promote them, because we're scared of being criticized for the flaws of our games we know to be true

that's because fagoon has been actively driving people away, it's been a few times now that people have talked about abandoning /agdg/. I wouldn't be surprised if some various /agdg/ bunkers across random imageboards have been revitalized from some devs that were previously from these threads...

he always either adds something from his game or random self-made fanart (as opposed to progress or memes made in the previous thread as is tradition) or he adds a link to his russian alice loli shit or a link to his game's demo hidden in the OP like he did last thread (under helpful links, "/abettergame/: blah blah frydarian tale or whatever")
it's really quite pathetic, and what's worse is sometimes people don't notice and it doesn't get removed for days.

There were about 200 other people for the online portion, then 150 were still around after the first month and like 120 showed up in Austin. They paid for everything and even bussed us back and forth from our apartments to the office. The age range was mostly 20s, some 30s, a few 40s, a few under 21.

The vast majority of people took jobs working for Alpha School which is a private school there in Austin, and Texas is going to start giving 10k a year in education vouchers, so the person that set up the program (it was mainly set up for his companies to hies from, there wasn't a lot of outside interest except some people from Epic came and talked/recruited). Jobs were all 200k with no weird bs or runaround. you should definitely try the next one in June if you aren't doing anything else with your life. Practice the CCAT and get familiar with

I want you to imagine a fictional scenario for a second.
Let's say you made a game in 3-4 years. It has some "novel" mechanics that haven't been used like that before. Let's say the game is about magic and wizards, and the gameplay has a spell making component, a spell casting component and a spell binding (to items, locations) component. The game is a moderate success, about 500 reviews in 1 year. People say it's a bit rough but the gameplay is original and fresh.
Now let's say someone comes and pretty much steals the "spell making" part of your gameplay. Completely rips off the mechanics 1 to 1 and just makes a small game entirely centered around that gameplay loop. You don't even get to use the spells you make, you just get points based on how well the spell is made, like in Balatro or something. The game also has worse art than yours, but is sold at half the price and only made in like 3 months. The game then proceeds to get around 10-20k reviews in the first year.
How would you react to that? How would it make you feel? Do you think the judge would be sympathetic when I plead guilty for murder?

reach out for a collab because of the similar mechanics
Grit your teeth, of course, as it's still frustrating, but if you show up and say "Hey! Your mechanics look inspired by mine. How about we make a sequel together combining parts of both?" then you'll be golden.

Lol the meta is making games faster and faster which will result in even more games flooding steam exacerbate the problems with the indie market which will necessitate making games even faster. Its a race to the bottom like what happened to the google play store. I don't blame developers doing it, its the only way to guarantee income right now, but I do blame steam for facilitating it.

But the only reason the second company could target a growing market, was because the first company took the risk to target a non-existent one and prove the concept? If the lesson we took from this was "never target a non-existent market" then there'd be no new growing markets because everyone would only do what has already been proved and tested.

The most I've done was back when the hackmd markdown was created and I added a bunch of resources / solutions for Unity and very few about Unreal, in the case someone was like "boy i need AI or pathfinding for my game, what could I use so I don't have to spend 500 years programming it myself?" back when it was split by engines in different pages instead of being all in a single page compressed md, but I eventually gave up because keeping track of the md being updated and changes not appearing the next version with no idea why the reason was demotivating

The market that was targeted wasn't 'spell-building game', the market that was targeted was 'Balatro-esque builder where number go up'. OP's game was an entirely different genre. My code to a good name has always been this:
1, It needs to feel good to say. Like the actual sounds you make have to be tongue-friendly sounds. Because you don't want people stumbling over your name. In that case, they'll just opt to not say it.

2, Two syllable names are optimal. You can do three syllables if it's a really good name. But type to keep it down to two. This keeps things nice and snappy. Nobody want's to say a name that's too long.

For example, "Elizabeth" is too long. 4 syllables. That's why it gets cut down to Beth, Liza, Betty, or Elli. Among others. Elizabeth has a couple dozen nicknames. All to avoid having to sound out that long name.

3, You can include an optional title name. Say the two syllable name you settled on was "beaver", then your title name might be "river". So together, its "beaver river". Both "bea" and "ver" feel goo on the tongue. And "river" is not bad. Though "reaver" sounds better. So may make it "Beaver Reaver."

ok. I mean, you might be onto something. I don't know linguistics that deeply to know what tochees or iambs are. But certainly the words you say are trochees feel better on the tongue.

However, you replied to the other anon without contesting his claim that "Stardew Valley" is a 4 syllable name. So that's why I replied to you.

I still want to add some scenery which will reduce the blandness.
But also populate the level with more enemies. The first level will contain cannon enemies that will try to shoot at you. They'll be a hot air balloon enemy which I haven't created yet. And will end with a train boss enemy.

I made 3 games without learning anything about making games. Each of them made me more money per hour than my Javascript code monkey job.
For my 4th and 5th games I was learning theory about gamification and marketing and color theory. Both those games failed miserably. Now I'm working on my 6th game, often drunk, trying to forget what I "learned" about making games. The funny thing is that theory could be good and the failed games weren't worse than my first 3 games, but instead the competition got better and more numerous. I was Jesse Owens who won the gold in Berlin but now I'm competing against Usain Bolts or whoever is faster now.

as you can see it only got meme replies though where it should be obvious to anyone why it didnt become a massive success
i just dont think its at all likely for someone to make a really good game then for it to somehow get ignored due to lack of marketing, in fact the opposite is much more likely to happen where a flawed game flukes its way into popularity for whatever reason
>>
>>521196202
Not only is that not true, but it's typically because "indie" devs refuse to get good at art. For a minute the fake ass 2d nostalgia allowed people to cheat the system but the reason there is less success in general is everyone just puts out slop 2D or 3D.

You don't, because it's the algorithm's job to figure out what makes them the most money. They give every game a small baseline of daily visibility to test that game's performance against other games. Steam is not going to just leave money on the table.

Healed to Death released with only around 3k wishlists, and it will very easily pass 3k sales within the first week if it hasn't already: i.e over 100% week 1 wishlist conversion rate. (@Branno please provide your numbers if you can. Thank you.) He doesn't have a publisher and didn't promote it quite that hard (no streamers and no big youtubers), and he's obviously not promoting it himself right now, since he's preoccupied with fixing day1 bugs. It's a game that the Steam algorithm tried showing to some people. More of those people bought the game than other games Steam showed, and they played it for much longer than other games, and so Steam continues to show HtD to more people. That's all it takes.

Yeah I think play time is what reinforces the algorithm more which should have been obvious. I'm focusing on making addictive gameplay time too. 4 of my 5 beta testers said they played for around 5hs and needed to stop themselves from playing.

There's a chance it'll hit a new peak today at peak hours, and that'll be a good indicator to both Steam and us if it will continue to sell. Other /agdg/ releases that took much longer to develop and had publishers that got them a bunch of streams and 10x+ more wishlists such as ToK and Underspace sold about the same as HfF. Steam is your marketing. You don't need (much) external marketing.

No? They market your game, help with stuff like translation, porting or a physical release, merchandise and generally help fund your work or find you people like illustrators, animators or whatever. As long as you don't run into a dogshit publisher you benefit from several magnitudes of higher sales, while they collect a percentage of that. It's a working model that only puts off the terminally greedy and nacrissistic.

I have in the past. Two of our projects were in /v/3 2020. Worked with a group. Unfortunately outside of one or two things the majority of stuff never came out. I mostly stuck to the concept art/sprite side of things as coding eludes me (which is why I was a part of a team). I can ask everyone else if they're willing to let me dump some builds here. I doubt it though.

Nowadays due to IRL things I stick to being a dad, managing /v/3, and making my comic. I help out on the writing side for the projects the group works on.

For menu navigation, all you need to do is make sure the focus_neighbor values are set and call grab_focus when you pop up a menu. You do not need to write any code. The built-in actions like ui_left/right/up/down and ui_accept handle this.

>Why would I do something I don't enjoy, when I'm neither getting paid nor threatened into doing it?
The payment would come after publishing a successful game, known colloquially as 'making it' hence why you are ngmi, i.e. not gonna make it.

The threat is only that you're going to do all this work on projects that you never finish and have nothing to show for all the time you've spent on these types of things. The threat is that this that you will wallow in mediocrity and obscurity because you stop as soon as things become difficult. Even if you one day decided you wanted to no longer be mediocre and actually make something and see it through to the end... you can't because you never practiced the vital skill of just working because it's time to work, not because you feel like it, of powering through a slump.

The threat is that you will waste your entire life in this way. Entirely at the mercy of whatever random feelings happen to be in you, like a woman. No real capacity for agency, no determination

>Lost the passion
People like you don't get to use that word, you mistake your momentary fleeting whim as passion, that is not passion.

And before you come back with some fortune cookie wisdom like
>time you enjoyed wasting is not wasted
that is hollow and pure cope for losers, it pales in comparison to actually accomplishing goals that you set out to do.
>>
>>521213137
This requires setting up a separate inputMap just for analog movement and making the code across the entire game more complicated (I want menus to work with both keyboard and gamepad). From what I can tell this has been a longstanding issue since 3.5:

https://github.com/godotengine/godot/issues/72737

Surely something as simple as analog stick menu navigation would be a solved problem in Godot, right?

obviously _UnhandledInput is supposed to be called every time the joystick updates, which of course can happen many times a frame
it kind of makes sense that InputEvent doesn't have a IsActionJustPressed method since you wouldn't really expect and event to know if it was the specific event that triggered the Action.
Input.IsActionJustPressed just has to compare to whatever the Action's state was last frame

It requires using Controls. If you want to do something fancier, like 3D cards, you can have them monitor and respond to the focus state of the underlying controls they are representing. If Controls are good enough for every Godot game on Steam, they're good enough for your game.

Generally speaking, yeah. It's definitely do-able with custom texturing in a program like Substance Painter or Designer, but things like linework (either out lines or in lines), wanting things to "move around" etc, are way easier to do via shaders and/or post-processes.

I think per-object materials and potentially shaders looks better overall (like pic rel, its a video I reference pretty often), but it's not practical for solo people like myself to do that.

Instead I have one uber shader that covers the foundation of the stylings, and then a few post processing things I made to tie them together. It also makes it easier to switch up styles between painted, drawn w/ pencil, or colored w/ crayon on the fly.

>>521223007
Yeah. You can probably make cool things on substance painter or do 2D animations for things (I know a few games do 3D worlds, but the characters are 2D drawn, like that recent surreal/dreamy BBQ game)

Thank you! There are like three threads now from when I first posted so I'm not sure where to respond, but yeah, it is a horror game. Your main defense against monsters is your gun that houses a pet in it. And yes, if you don't take care of the pet and it gets hungry it will start making noises that can alert monsters. If you let your pet starve to death it will eat you and in a game over. You also need to keep your pet fed to regenerate your gun's ammunition/energy.

>>521173620
>>What's this game about overall?
Without doing a tl;dr, the main character is journeying far underground to get to a certain *place* so they can have their *wish* granted.

Along the way you must defend yourself against monsters with your gun that also houses a virtual pet you need to take care of or else it'll kill you. The name of the gun and game is Tamabuki (Tama stemming from Tamagotchi/Tamago and Buki for weapon).
>>
