Still pretty English friendly but FAR less crowded than spiritual sites in Kyoto like the Inari shrine. Alot of temple lodging there if you want a more up close view of monk life. On the more anime side of things I personally prefer Den Den Town in Osaka over Akihabara in Tokyo but both are good. Den Den Town was easier to navigate and the prices in general were alittle cheaper. Honestly I think Osaka is a better spot than Tokyo. It's also very close to other popular stops like Nara (feeding the deer is fun), Kyoto and Kobe. Also hit Okinawa in the second half of my last vacation and the beaches were great. I didn't know about this until after I got back to the states but to bring it back to Uma there's a Rice Shower themed resturant in Chiba Prefecture named "Rice Shower" that sounds like a fun time.
