When I purchased my quest pro sometime last year (600€, ~700$), I thought I would regret it. I thought the Deckard would drop and I'd kick myself to see it have OLED, native face tracking, native lighthouse support while still being wireless. I was honestly so ready to cry, shelf my qpro and just drop another 1,000$ straight up.

Today, I feel nothing. This headset is junk meant for a target market that will use VR once and then throw it into the cupboard. I know a bunch of tech enthusiast irl from work and similar who have VR headsets and they treat it like that. They wear it maybe three times a year. That's your target market, not the daily driver AGP vrtroons (me).

Gaben is a nigger and I cast myocarditis upon him, he can go join Jelly in the pearly gates. Fucking TRASH.
>>
>>546308940
Would be nice actually, but it would require a complete redesign.
>>
I don't mind lack of face tracking because nobody even looks at me and i wear my anxiety mental breakdown on my face 24/7 anyway

>>546308557
on one hand i don't have to have a panic attack wondering if they're going to have blinking red light of death every time i get on vr, on the other thyre going to be obsolete. man, dont even get me started if they start no longer selling index cables. thts my biggest fear. i can maybe get out 2 more years of my current one but who knows how much they'll go for offmarket. too grim to think about
>>
Meanwhile me here still waiting for Shitfall Flip controllers

>>
>>546309282
Playing standalone on Frame is just playing your Steam library, so you'd just launch the PC version of the game
>>
>>546309363
>>
No direct Displayport is a dealbraker to me, I mainly bought VR for racing games, where I'd rather just plug the headset in
>>
Gamer's Nexus' video has a shot of the Steamlink debug graph, showing a latency of about 12ms. The best I've ever seen anyone get is about 20ms, with 30ms being more common, so 10-20ms improvement over your average Quest 3 experience probably.
Elsewhere they list numbers as low as 8ms end-to-end, which probably doesn't take the game render time and such into consideration.
Might actually be acceptably low
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWUxObt1efQ
>>
>>546309781
ah yes no no no i dont want 2ms latency wireless i want to be cabled to a pc with the same latency.

Alright give it to me straight then.
I'm still on an OG vive cause I missed the index bus and didn't want to commit to the frankenzucc setup in the hope Valve wouldn't be shit.
Now that it's looking pretty confirmed dogshit, what's the best option? How much of a hassle is it to make quest pro (or whatevers best from questoids now with FT/fingers I didnt pay attention) play nice with PCVR wirelessly? Is the bigmeme 2 (RMA lottery lmao) any better in comparison? How grim is it looking?
I need other people who have actually owned these things to feed me opinions.

Erm no you can use the slimes the ULTIMATE vive trackers (they are called this because they actually work better than the flawless 3.0s) or even xbox kinect and play station move.

So, actually, there are MANY alternatives to lighthouse tracking.

Moreover, when Fluxpose is released we will have an even BETTER option because it certainly wont be another in a long line of disappointments.

Alright vrg
I lurk here most of the time but for now I want to get the dedicated opinions of only the most enthusiast of the market
We're going to be developing a Steam Frame Pro, but we're still trying to figure out what features and upgrades to add to it over the Frame Vanilla
What do you guys want?
>>
>>546311894
But anon, just think, you can play flat games with your vr headset!!! It will be like a steam deck on your face!!
Just imagine, you can now have a vastly inferior and more uncomfortable experience with inferior controllers for just a few hundred dollars!
>>
>>546311003
Index is an alright upgrade if you can get it at a decent price (don't let index users meme you into paying $1k for a 5yo headset)
BSB is fine too but thats still a $1000 headset + cost of knuckles and base stations
>Qpro meme in 2025
lol
If you care about FBT/Finger tracking Index is an obvious choice and if you want wireless get a Q3S and slap an extra tracker on it and you're golden. If you want face tracking too Frame is probably gonna be your best bet + better latency compared to Q3S.
>>
>>546311003
The real answer is to buy an extra tundra or 3.0 for whatever Black Friday sale they have and wait and see.

They keep their value pretty well so you have nothing to lose especially if you are already in the base station ecosystem.

I think Frame has a good chance of being a decent headset, if display won't be shit and latency will be handled well (everything so far suggests they did some autism in that direction), this might be a solid Index 2, assuming it won't cost rumored $1200. But if you want BSB2, I have one and honestly I can recommend it despite shitting on it in thread so much. It's crazy light, image is crazy sharp, software is decent, customer service seems to be fast though it's a fucking discord channel and because of that i feel like i'm not being taken seriously, but that's a pet peeve, I had no rma-tier hardware issues so far, and they send new gaskets on request even if you're unsure if you need one. It's overpriced, it's ridden with various small downsides, but if I could turn back time, I'd buy it again.

But don't despair on Frame just yet, wait for emotions to cool down and for proper opinions to form. This really seems like a potentially decent device to me.

Really doubt Frame will get any mainstream appeal, it does nothing special, nothing grand, aside of yet another attempt of selling steam machines. Quest does most of the stuff Frame does, so if someone would be interested in what Frame offers, he'd already have a Quest. Sure, it probably does many things better, and PC flat gaming gimmick is nothing to scoff at, but imo this entire "steam hardware ecosystem" gimmick is not all that appealing to the average joe. Normies will hear linux and run the fuck away, PC vidya enthusiasts already have a device that outperforms gabecube, VR enthusiasts already have a headset.

stick with the light house tracking
oled screen setup the screen autists suggest
eye tracking with eyebrow upperface tracking
lower face tracking with the tongue tracking like vive / project babble
finger tracking
fbt hip, feet pucks included

we literally just want an index 2.0 that uses light houses
let me repeat that

A BETTER INDEX
OLED SCREENS
FACE TRACKING
WITH LIGHT HOUSE TRACKING BECAUSE WE KNOW IT WORKS AND ITS STILL THE BEST
PARTS THAT DONT BREAK
CONTROLLER FINGER TRACKING LIKE INDEX CONTROLLERS
FBT INCLUDED
not a single person who knows anything about PC VR will be able in good conscious to suggest anything else if that's the package of the index 2.

bigshit beyond is awful and will die on you from sweating and youll be stuck with discord server support. oh and $1800 for just the headset oh and no real eye tracking or ft
qpro is literally a quest 2 with ft +100 pixels lmao

frame has literally everything we asked for and more -ft on release which is so obviously gonna be an addon.
and if you are sitting there thinking it needs base stations you are retarded beyond belief base stations are measurable less accurate and the one leg up they did have (update frequency) is shat on by frame also..

>>
>>546316451
btw Anything less than this means your ideal target user "hardcore PC VR gamer" is going to hybridize whatever you give them in order to fix any of those deficiencies

your hardcore pc vr gamer almost 95% of the time also plays vrchat
which means they have light houses and htey will be wearing light house tracked FBT even if you make a headset that doesn't use light houses, like the light houses will be a part of the setup regardless unless you deliver some kind of full body FBT with the Frame Pro that is better than light house FBT
>>
im coping that the controller tracking will be good enough to not have to trex in vrc... maybe there will be an addon for rear tracking...

How will calibrating to basestations work? Those cameras might be able to detect the light from the basestation and auto calibrate, which would be nice but i doubt that it will do that by default. I really cope they don't make you strap a tracker to the hmd...

>>546318246
Did you miss the memo? Base station tracking is DEAD. Get with the times. Yes, it worked flawlessly. Yes, it was easy to set up. Yes, it will still be necessary for FBT. However, none of that is important because, while it was easy, setting it up was like just totally too much work and inside out tracking works almost as well if you ignore all the problems.
>>
>>546318527
the deal with them is that they sound good but aren't out yet and thus need to be treated as fake until they come out and get real testing.

Their announcement/website boasts about having 12 WHOLE BETA TESTERS, for context.
>>
>>546318527
the deal is that they don't exist and you only have the word of the developer and his friends that they're as good as they say, you can't buy them because they don't exist and what you do get in 5 years when they're available will be inferior as a commercial product compared to whatever black magic prototypes they made to sell them
>>
>>546318523
you are comparing shitty company or diy to valve.
also its not its sole tracking method its additional to the headset tracking them
>>
>>546318523
>fixing them requires them being in view of the HMD for less than a second
same shit happens on Q3 without the IMU's.
even if the IMU's somehow made it worse it would fix itself whenever you move your hand in front of you?

I hope there's a way for the new Steam Frame controllers to be used with multiple headsets if they're running Steam OS. I would like a new standard for slam controllers.
>>
>>546318107
Hope this has no major downsides. An alternative to lighthouses is good for FBT in VR long term.

Wait what's the point of advertising a vr headset as a device to play flat games on? Does valve think there's a target demographic that wants this?
If a subset of people who play flat only do buy it, it's possible they could be converted to vr and revitalize vr gaming, but I really don't see flat gamers buying a headset unless the headset offers something valuable to them in flat gaming. Maybe for people who travel frequently and don't want to lug a high refresh rate monitor around? But thats what laptops are for. So what's the point?
>>
I just want a bigshit beyond with eye tracking, passthrough, and oculus controllers
>>
Quest 3 is to Frame what Switch was to the Steam Deck. I can literally see people buy this just for discord movie watching togheter and using on airplanes, when traveling and such. Movie watching machine and play console ports.
No LH tracking is pretty bad, Valve abandoning it means no big company is standing behind LH, wich was an open standard that anyone could make hardware for. I hoped the Valve frame would be LH playspace/SteamVR native since Index was such a good FBT experience.

Still gonna buy it because I'm a sucker kek, but I hope it's better then the Quest/SteamVR hybrid that sucks ass.

Every single VR company is pursuing this demographic which doesn't exist outside of their fantasies and it's the people who will "casually" play vr. They have this idea that people will just throw the headset on and play it like candy crush except they apparently don't understand that wearing vr sucks and normal people do not want to do it. It's the same reason so much shit gets released with pitiful battery life and no easy way to swap the batteries; they apparently don't know people play games in long blocks and not 20 minute bursts even though this is true of pc gamers, console gamers, vr gamers, and even fucking mobile gamers.

That end game won't happen until wireless is somehow able to introduce no extra latency, and no visual artifacts.
Either that, or the phone addicted zoomers get relevant enough where not having a computer or laptop is common enough for them to see a standalone mini pc hmd as a better choice. Lots of less demanding games like mmos run pretty well on the deck, so a deck-like setup than can also do some light VR on its own has some appeal.
