I feel like main story progression was designed around higher-tier accounts that have a whole lot more starting liquidity and more stash space. Right now I have too many guns, but even if I were to sell all of them I wouldn't have enough to buy a junk box.

Look at the nuclear plant coolant towers that's where the SOUTH is. Now the only thing what you need to do is to figure out what is EAST and what is WEST.
It's somewhat easy to get lost in the middle section of the map but otherwise there should be plenty of landmarks.

I used to primarily use the big mountain in the distance as my landmark. It's in the north northeast. If you spawn between all of the ponds though, you're fucked if you're unfamiliar w/ the map and lack a compass. Outskirts spawns can be also be confusing.

It's okay with mods. However, after you are at the point in which you don't need maps and sort of know what the game is about you have already learned how tepid this game really is.
You can gather 90% of the hideout upgrades from Ground Zero alone. Every mission is basically a shitty MMO fetch quest.
What makes Tarkie 'fun' is (or was) it's obscurity but after a certain point it's not obscure at all obviously.
Inventory management is pure shit in this game and after a while you'll be sick and tired of it. Especially when the default game lacks any sort of quality of life - scroll wheel speed adjustment (no, you need to scroll 1 line at the time...?!?), multiple item selection/drag and drop, insuring items via right click menu without pop-ups etc - I could write an A4 full of issues what these fucking soviet cretins haven't bothered even to think about).
It's still somewhat comfy to play after all though... Online or offline.

I hate and love the AUG.
feels janky and more plasticy than it is, shoots amazingly, with an explosion uncomfortably close to you face, and aesthetics that make me download bullpup grindr in shame and excitement.
