Honest?Good Pretentious is the works of H.P Lovecraft, J.R. Tolkien, Orwell. Good Non Pretentious authors would be: Oda, Brandon sanderson, etc. You can always write pretentious prose. But you must earn it. Yes, this doesen't answer your question but this is my literary autist infodump.

for me, writing is pretentious when it seems like the author is trying to sound cool over communicating a real idea; what they typed is guided only by "how can i seem smart?" of course, the line between "pretentious" and "they were having fun with words" is thin and very much subjectively placed but i feel it's obvious when the prose lacks flow or is wearisome to read. prevalence of the lines matters too -- a pretentious person will try to have every single line be "deep", someone non pretentious does it a few times and moves on >fun with words"A girl sits on the front steps slaughtering time.">pretentious "Happiness is when you want it to last longer.
