The Shadow characterization in this issue is okayish. His expressions are right, he's got those little fangs. When what they're standing on lurches, and the other characters stumble while he stays balanced. They did this exact same thing in Sonic X.And when he saves Rouge, he's also doing it for a practical reason (getting into position). It kind of reminds me of when he saved Rouge in SA2 and said it was for the Chaos Emeralds. There's a part of him that doesn't want her hurt. He tries to justify saving her as just being convenient for him to achieve his goals.I believe that the subtlety of his care makes it more compelling. When people try to portray him as acting out of kindness, heroism, or some deep wholesome love, it becomes uninteresting. Shadow isn't a generic hero. That's why I don't like Rouge's "You'd better take me out to the best cafe in town." They've never shown her and Shadow just hanging out when there's no big threat or mission. That's why Rouge often has to manipulate or exploit him to get him to do anything. Like for example, in the 2025 Joypolis dialogue, Shadow has no idea what the photo booth is, and Rouge persuades him that he needs to investigate it so a picture can be taken of him.But it's hard not to feel the frustration with the damn jobbing. They just can't help themselves. Shadow seems to screw up and make things worse almost every time he appears in this comic. He's supposed to be Sonic's incredibly skilled and dangerous equal, yet IDW never treats him that way.IDW's Shadow characterization is slightly better than it used to be, but it's not perfect by any means.
