Is there a reason beyond ingrained design approach for CRPGs to almost never treat their companions as inseparable from the main plot? JRPGs and Earthbound clones, while I am not a big fan, manage to nail this point perfectly with the design sometimes not even having a firmly defined MC. But in CRPGs they will always be relegated to optional sidecontent - exposition boxes that explain their background and then fuck off after you complete their fetchquest and do nothing for the plot. BioWare is basically the only one that tried to push the design forward on this point, but only up to a point. And all the other big dogs - Obsidian, Owlcat, Larian - just do the same old shit. You know what was the exception? Disco Elysium with Kim. That's it.

There aren't very many lesbian companions in games. Which makes sense, since women are the minority among gamers, and lesbians are yet another minority among women. I really liked the big battle. I was able to hold the gate with Ulbrig and Lann the Mann pretty much indefinitely and it felt very heroic. Wolf and Cam holding the rooftops against the ladders (which it wouldn't let me just kick over, or if it would I couldn't see how), and I had Seela watching the other gate certain it would fall down too eventually. Cam heroically went down in a 3v1 on the rooftops but really accounted for herself nicely. Wolf eventually went down as well. There really isn't much RP reason for my character to trust or help Wolf, but I feel like I need him as my lockpick guy, so I like to think this was the moment he proved himself, rushing to Cam's aid and fighting hard odds before eventually going down himself, he has it where it counts. I had to send Ulbrig to try and hold the roofs while I had my martyr last stand at the gates, I thought about pulling Seela but I knew they'd come through as soon as I did, and eventually they did. Seela went down too, but held everyone long enough with Lann's help for me to get over there and finish the bull demon. Really cool and definitely feels like a 'canon' moment for my character and party. Everyone has good reason to treat me like the main character now after seeing that instead of me just being that girl who survived falling into a hole. She did the little prayer animation right after the battle too which was a nice touch, "thanks Iomedae".My only complaint is party size in things like this, same complaint I had with BG3, there are times where it would make sense for companions to be there whether they're in the party or not, it's an all-hands-on-deck fight for survival so Ember and Nenio should have been out there at least as AI. Ember at least, I could see Nenio and definitely Darren hiding. But there's like fifty friendly NPCs in the same fight so I know the game could do it.

That said I'm okay with mortal alignments being fuzzier than that of gods and outsiders. I think it's better to view people having more of a probabilistic cloud of alignment than a rigid setting. A "LG" is more likely to act in lawful or good ways, but may occasionally act chaotically or selfishly depending on the situation. I think the way the Pathfinder games track alignment even does a good job reflecting this.

The alignments are full wedges Neutral takes up space. At most you could go from Neutral Good to Chaotic Good. And for that to happen you already have to be more or less just True Neutral leaning Good-Chaotic Good.

Maybe the worst part is that owljew still refused to let you begin the prologue with as many mercs as you want. you MUST go through the entire shield maze with a -24 (didn't it used to be -48 too?) ability point penalty while taking 2x damage protected only by characters who cant cast useful spells or defend against any attack and survive.afaik the only way through the early game on this difficulty that isn't expected to just save scum their way through is SoD builds and if I can be honest that's one of the least fun ways to play this game for me. Everything when you do that is about dumping all your stats to pump one, nuking the encounter with sleep spells or other 1/ko attacks, then resting. I could reduce the damage of the enemies and increase their HP but while I am 300% for increasing encounter HP theres no way to give enemies more action economy so the more HP they get, the more valuable that play style becomes. at the same time leaving unfair on is starting to make me hate the game and myself.
