Thread for the discussion of game console emulation, emulators, or your experiences in a game you're emulating

https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

Read the General problems FAQ before asking questions. If you still need help, post your specs (HWiNFO screenshot), OS, emulator version number and details of what's wrong.

Please contribute to the wiki if you discover any inaccuracies or have relevant information to append.

READ THE WIKI BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE:
>Where do I get games

Basically nothing is going to be more efficient or as random as just sampling a pre-generated noise texture. Real-time noise generation should be a last resort for if you need parameterized noise.

>>
>>556421013
Probably not.
>>
>>556421013
Doubtful, at least in the near future. Nvidia cards have close to fuck all documentation, which is what they rely on for emulation. Pretty much the closest we have is the bits that Xemu emulates of the Xbox's GPU at a low level, and that card is something between a Geforce 3 and 4, which is waaaaaaay out of scope for 86Box. They've stated there's efforts underway to emulate the Riva TNT, which is a much earlier card, and even if they ever manage it, it'll likely be where they'll stop for a good while just out of performance considerations.
>>
>>556421013
what exactly are you expecting to achieve by emulating them that wouldn't be accomplished by just directly translating their dx7 or whatever calls to a modern graphics api?

For Eden:
> [fs/core] Load external content without NAND install (#2862)
Thank god, lugging around an extra 70GB of NCAs extracted from update NSPs always felt like such a drag. Plus, the emulator loads much faster now (my home partition is on a disk raid, bite me).
But there's a small bug: XCI's that had updates bundled with them will create an update list showing multiple entries named after the highest version of an update you have. Like XCX will show two entries for 1.02 when I have the 1.02 update NSP in the configured update folder and when I move that elsewhere the second 1.02 entry becomes 1.01. But by default the actual highest update gets selected so it shouldn't confuse tards too much.

Depends on the game, plenty of games on the wii (iirc mario galaxy 2 in particular) work with normal controls and have 'shake' bound to something different because the devs playtested it with this motherfucker and didn't want to shake their arms around. I don't know what percentile it would be but it's always worth a try.

unrelated I'm giving disgaea 1 a break after getting most of the way through it. already beat ff12 and loved it, ff10 felt like it was for small children but I'm still going to play through it for the story and voice acting at some point. Tried ff7 and the item leveling shit is utterly unforgivable, then I found out they also wrote out half the characters after disc 1 and noped out even though I'll finish it eventually.
RPG games on the PS2 with a robust leveling system?

your reply was very frustrating but I'm happy you are having fun lol

Took a look at the recommendations mirahaze for /v/ and most of the strategy games looked exceptionally lame in the gameplay videos I watched except for Drakengard. What I wasn't expecting was for Drakengard to be exactly the game that Skyward Sword was advertised as. Very repetitive and very grindy so far (in a good way) and the secrets are fun to find and the flying is spectacular. Not quite an RPG as much as a single character dynasty warriors game. I'm having a blast and so is my dragon who keeps trying to talk down my character from making irrational decisions and neglecting the campaign to basically go off and do what would be sidequests in any other game, causing problems as people die because I didn't move fast enough lol my guy is just so hate filled and I love him.

1:08 to 1:11 "Link takes flight to find her, WHEREVER she may be" (advertising that the loftwing would be used wherever creatively without actually saying it so they can't be sued for false advertising)
1:13 to 1:20 "During his adventure, Link can FREELY explore the skys by riding on this colossal bird, a loftwing!"
https://youtu.be/EAPldVCRo-g
Then at the e3 demo literally all they showed off was the bird race like that was going to be the biggest part of the game. Then as soon as you get done with that bird race you totally drop loftwings from the plot for 8 to 12ish hours except as a means of travelling the very empty hub with 2 islands for less than a minute between trips, basically just becoming setdressing until you do a short mission in a tornado that takes less than 20 minutes and then it goes back to being setdressing for the rest of the game besides, I think, one whole minigame race. There's a whole section of the game, probably the first hour, dedicated to talking to Zelda and getting this parachute and landing on this spot and it's very very obvious from that tutorial that the parachute was supposed to be a momentum based item and not just 'you press this before you hit the ground after using your loftwing for fast travel and if you don't press the button we just press it for you and then sink down in a straight line.'
The implication was that our mount wasn't going to be Epona this game, it was going to be a fucking loftwing which was sick. Drakengard has a real flying mount for combat has the sudden boost when you press X as when you shook both the wiimote and the nunchuck, has a knight with a sword who leaps off the dragon and fights with a fancy moveset which is exactly what I expected from Skyward Sword given how it was advertised (except for the hordes of enemies thing.)
Coincidentally I'm also protecting a girl who has the goddess spirit in her just like in Skyward Sword as well.

I'd imagine they're affected similarly since ultimately it's an issue with the signal and the decoders. Which leads to the question, do you get a double NTSC effect when watching a VHS recording of a NTSC broadcast?

Also I wonder how VHS handled 240p? I know some freaks used to run their consoles through a VHS recorder and record their play. I'd assume everything just go recorded as interlaced video.

Back in the day of WC3, you would have preset blobs of scripting. A few people would bother to learn the actual syntax and raw dog it, but meh
And now you got visual pipeline tools to setup shader stacks. They work, elegantly, but if you want enough moving parts, at some point you need to avoid using prefabs in order to avoid cumulative copy paste.

This. CRT display was basically a hardware pixel shader. Big blobs of pixels in a single color were displayed as a quasi- texture, rough lines looked more smooth.
The most simple pixel shader featuring translucent scanlines is far from the real hardware, but it makes it closer to the original look than anything else.
Take a close look at the pic related, left side with enabled shader, right doesn't.

its both
CRTs dont have a fixed pixel count so it doesnt quite look like pixels
Even in a computer CRT through VGA, if you set a PC game resolution like 1024x768 in a 21" monitor it will look way better than what you'd expect, edges get naturally smoothed just on the basis that its a CRT and the pixel accuracy isnt quite perfect, or maybe the fact that theres no predefined pixel count

>it doesnt quite look like pixels
It looks like pixels, but the difference in display technology makes it extremely hard to spot individual "pixels" without pressing eye to the surface of the screen.
First, pixels are dots with size depending on resolution and screen size, not 100% tiny sharp rectangles of the same color.
Second, there's "noise" created by scanlines (visible but hard to focus the sight on) and aperture grille (barely visible).

Sounds like you have your controller plugged into the wrong port, when I have this issue on my playstation 2 it's because I'm using the player 2 controller and not the player 1 controller. Easy to get confused if they're the same color and you have long wires. Plenty of games work on the main menu because both players can control the menu but because you're in singleplayer mode it's only looking for inputs from controller 1, in multiplayer mode I bet controller 2 would be enabled.
Plus some games that are singleplayer only ever take inputs from slot 1.

Megadrive emulation only did this when i enabled shaders
most of MAME games run well without shaders seemingly

I'm running Linux Mint Debian Edition because it felt snappier than regular linux mint (ubuntu-based), but now that i see how outdated emulators are in the official repos, i would rather use an Ubuntu-based distro or CachyOS...

no, on linux just like on windows everything steals your cursor and your keyboard in fullscreen if it wants and can take all the resources of your operating system at all times because every single modern operating system can't distinguish between priorities and which code should run first. (IE, maybe the ability to hit control+shift+T should ALWAYS open my terminal no matter whether or not dota is having a fucking bad day on a 4090)
No matter what system you are on, if it can run games then it can hijack your system resources when the game crashes. No, wayland does not fix this.

Anything is ok, although you can use the internal HDD on a FAT. Slims work better if you use one of these memory card slot accessories (SD2PSX/MX4SIO) or ethernet, since the USB port is slow and there's no FireWire.

Yeah, I feel the same way, especially for the pages I created/edited myself. Maybe someday I could, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it yet. Those pages would need to tie into actual emulation aspects somehow to fit the wiki's focus, it's not really set up for pure "recommended games" lists like the /v/ one.

yep, MX4SIO is the barebones one, it's essentially just a SD to memory card slot conversor, everything else is handled by the homebrew. SD2PSX/PSxMemCard is more complex, has more features (like memory card support) and is faster/more accurate.

As for ethernet, you can use SMBv1 or NBD (less overhead) hosted on anything on your network. Some people use small routers with USB/SD slots too.

you shouldn't admit your type on 4chan. It's the most heavily monitored site around and you are not at all anonymous no matter how many proxies you put yourself behind because word choice and writing style identifies everyone easily if you filter for a venn diagram of who cares about what by interests and what interests overlap with eachother.

That has nothing to do with me but if you are known for contributing intelligent software you've just inadvertently made yourself an intelligence asset given that anyone who can track your identity offsite by writing style could control you by putting you in a room with a racist trannieshit-aware girl/femboy handler.

nah, most look like shit because the average dev either went with mixel shit or did some atrocious thing with less pixels than atari or just downscaled some hires art
>>
>>556764260
Yeah some of them are so low res that it would be meaningless.
>>
>>556764260
Most modern "pixel" games are more like cutouts of pixel art moving around a monitor resolution grid. Even look at the retro modes on games like Mario Maker, moving sprites aren't aligned to the backgrounds. The modern audience doesn't care that Mario is standing on a half pixel, they just want their smooth animations.

The blarg shaders in that core cause weird issues because genesis games run at all sorts of different resolutions, and the built in blarg shaders don't take this into account (they need specific fixed resolutions to work) and so they end up fucking up the display output.

Actually as the anon that asked about chd last night, in general sizes are not smaller than 7z-ed games, and in fact, it often can be a few hundred of mbs bigger. If I don't care about having them runnable all the time, might as well just leave them as 7zs. Though if I just extract one game for the PS2, and then leave that and the 7z at the same time, maybe it is basically the same as having them all chd-ed. But only because I don't have that many games, just a few dozen.

What's the point? You could already emulate the HOME Menu for launching NSP eShop games, switch back and forth between the menu and games, and access other HOME Menu sections just fine.
The only thing missing is support for inserted cartridge games (.XCI), but those never appeared in the actual HOME Menu on real hardware anyway. So why bother with a grid view?

It would look like this only if you had a really shitty TV. I mean a wooden potato tier dying TV from USSR. OP pic is a bit sterile, it could use those tiny color glitches, but in any other aspect it's far better than this.
Do you really think that TVs in 80s and 90s were incapable of displaying straight vertical lines without turning them into a zigzag?
>>
>>556834436
This is a universal problem for crt shaders. They are all modeled after Brazilian knock offs that were garbage.
Nobody that had a decent Jap crt would ever see anything like that.
>>
>>556835673
Anybody involved in development of shaders featuring scanlines, aperture grille, geometric distortion or whatever else related to CRT displays should start with getting passable render of pic related.
I assure you that a TV displaying things in the way the most of so- called CRT shaders does would be immediately tossed away.

no no, i mean it will literally look dogshit because the eyes in undertale are like a single pixel
compare that to say, the dracula pixel art in castlevania where looking at it on a CRT turns it from a red pixel into a glowing eyelid
Theres actually visual design concerns that are different depending on wether you make your "pixel art" game for a TV CRT or a modern screen.

by contrast, heres a game made for pixel-perfect modern LCD displays
Its not made with a CRT in mind simply because the devs never planned a CRT TV to play it, nor used CRT TVs while developing and playtesting the game, its not their fault but this game will probably benefit the least from A CRT or it may even detract from them
>>
>>556870607
there's nothing in a crt that says "smear red"

you get chroma bleeding like that because of crosstalk between the luma and chroma when you shove them both down the same cable, like with composite

you won't even get that with s-video which separate the luma from the chroma
>>

First time hearing about that. Looks like they dropped it.

Rather than content-aware shaders that would get retardedly long and complex for things beyond simple graphical effects, they need like custom scripts you can run that could draw into the screen borders and even take user interaction. You could do things like interactive maps in dungeon crawlers, bestiary entries for enemies you're currently fighting in jrpgs, etc...

Getting files through miraheze API didn't work out, only a handful of files got through. So you can reupload them if you want. A lot more tedious, but you can also wiki link using wikipedia files or direct hotlink images, example of both in this:

currently it's an exaggerated vhs and signal crust shader which can be configured to whatever level to crust you want, the crt effect is just crt-hyllian, I plan on integrating a custom crt effect once I'm happy with the underlying look but for now the crt stuff is just appended on (op image was my first attempt fucking around with shaderdev, it's a fucking mess)

there's also a lot of overlap with what I'm doing there and what full ntsc shaders do so I'm thinking of merging in all the relevant ntsc functionality to get rid of the redundancies, performance was my main goal since the off the shelf shader stack I was using for a similar effect was melting my gpu

several issues with this list
>Shooter category
>Includes First Person Shooters
>Includes Third Person shooters
>Includes oldschool autoscroll SHMUPS like R-Type
>includes oldschool arcade run and gun sidescrollers like Metal Slug
This should be split up in two or three categories.
>Arcade Shooters: Everything thats 2D or 2.5D like Metal slug and R-Type
>3rd Person Shooters
>1st Person Shooters

>Action/Adventure cateogry

again this list has so many different genres i dont know where to start. The fact that theres so many games in this category should be a good indicator its probably too broad.
Some possibilities for categorization
>freeroam action/RPG: GTA games, getaway, simpsons hit & run
>beat-em up games: God of War, God Hand, Devil may cry

>Stealth category as a genre.
Kinda niche, but if it exists i feel it shoudl include the Sly Cooper franchise

>Sports category
>airblade as noteworthy
that game is trash lol
>no fifa street 2005
>no downhill domination
>no splashdown (couldnt find it anyway)

>Huge RPG category
can probably divide this in subgenres, maybe by western RPG vs JRPG.
whoever made this must love RPGs. I dont, so i cant give ideas.

Sounds fun, but i have a boyfriend sorry
>>
>>556904030
Absolutely not
The most important part is frame pacing, and several systems don't run at exactly 60 Hz, so you need a VRR monitor (which are practically always high refresh rate too)
Who cares about shaders if the scrolling isn't buttery smooth like it should be? You'll understand when you'll see Castlevania scrolling on a VRR monitor
>>
>>556906521
anon all emulators just round 59.997fps to exactly 60.fps
>>
>>556906782
NES games run at 60.1 FPS
VRR is absolutely noticeable on NES games

Retard
Do you think emulators change their speeds for your monitor? NES emulator speedruns wouldn't be accepted if that was the case
When playing NES games on a regular 60 Hz monitor, frames have to be skipped once in a while so the game runs at the proper speed
>>
>>556908657
>Do you think emulators change their speeds for your monitor
they very literally do my dude, within reason at least, you get into some weird dos games that run at like 70hz and it's whatever at that point

I don't follow your gay faggot speedrunning shit but I'm sure they only accept specific emulators with specific settings or they use other metrics than a stopwatch or they apply a correcting factor

if you think about it the nes and the ps2 are both 240p consoles, the only difference is that the ps2 offsets the 240p image it outputs by one scanline every other frame
>>
>>556990105
I think a lot of PS2 games just render to a 480p framebuffer internally 30 times a second. Disable all deinterlacing in a PS2 emulator and most of the library still renders at perfect 480p. Only a handful of games show clear interlacing artifacts suggesting they're rendering a distinct image 60 times a second.
>>
>>556990105
>anon discovers interlaced scan

>>556991852
The framebuffer is usually 512x448, which is essentially 640x480 but cutting the overscan are for more performance.

it's a shame that RA doesn't have a true base size uniform, original size doesn't really cut it since those values get modified by cpu video filters and the emulator itself if it's cropping overscan or applying its own built-in filters

There was, duh. CRTs always have some overscan. They just cut the pixels outside of what was considered the the safe area by the industry and told devs to draw the framebuffer at the res, which would give them extra power to work with, with basically no downsides. Same reason SNES would output at 256x224 and not 320x240
>>
>>557096830
dreamcast had vga out, crt monitors didn't really have overscan

PS2 didn't, it was meant to be used on CRT TVs, which did have overscan. Using that res was just a smart optimization.

>>557097132
My assumption would be that DC devs could detect if it was in VGA mode or just composite or whatever and if they cared they could adjust the framebuffer as wanted. People played DC on televisions so games had to deal with overscan regions just like everyone else.

>>556996083
>>557096830
I think you are misunderstanding how horizontal resolution works on CRTs. It's basically a percentage of the output horizontal resolution that gets lost to overscan. Outputting 512 or 256 wide you're still going to lose some of those pixels to overscan.
The Genesis rendering at 320x224 has more pixels in the visible area than the SNES running at 256x224 on the same TV.

PS2 outputs 640x480, which avoids that. Pic related is essentially what reaches the TV, and you can see that pretty well on modern TVs.
>>
>>557101887
what you think of as pixels don't even have meaning to the crt
on the nes a "pixel" is 8 ppu clocks wide but a chroma wavelength is 12 ppu clocks wide, so where does one pixel end and another start? it's just a big smear
>>
>>557102220
Really? Is that like a hardware level feature or is it just a common thing games do? How come I've never seen that in PCSX2?

Anyway the SNES definitely doesn't do that.
>>
>>557102793
GS just scales it. PCSX2 just outputs the content of the framebuffer instead of emulating everything else. Same reason why you won't get 1920x1080 (actually 1728x960) if you set GT4 to 1080i, but what's actually in the framebuffer, a 576x960 image.
>>
(3580000/ 60) / 262.5

A CRT can display exactly 227 distinct color pixels per scanline.
>>
>>557104000
if every pixel on a scanline is the same color then it can display an infinite number of pixels per scanline
>>
>>557104000
eh, that's more like the distribution of color transitions, luminosity changes are higher resolution, and even then it's kind of like downsampling a 640 pixel wide image with linear blur but better, it's only a problem with high frequency changes and games don't usually have 1 pixel wide checkerboard patterns

what a fucking mess lmao

this is what happens when jeets gets obsessed with running early 3d games at 8K instead of just emulating the hardware properly. now the project is stuck babysitting a gigantic pile of GS hacks and per-game fixes because the hardware renderer has to guess what the PS2 was doing half the time.

imagine if that effort went into tighter FPU/EE/VU emulation and a seriously optimized and improved low-level compute renderer instead. we’d probably have something way cleaner by now instead of tweaking GameIndex entries every time a shader sneezes, or falling back to some janky-ass software renderer just to make one game behave.

but nah, gotta chase resolution screenshots for reddit. *Conor McGregor yelling in the background*

well the real PS3 doesn't spend ~60 seconds staring at a blank screen or generic progress bar either, on a real console you literally select the game icon in XMB, hear the sound (SND0.AT3), see the wallpaper fade in, maybe a tiny animated icon/video preview (ICON1.PAM), then it boots.

RPCS3 currently shows a mostly empty interface with text like "Compiling PPU modules", "Linking PPU modules", "Building SPU Cache" for minutes on first launch (or after updates). Casual users have zero clue what any of that means, why it's taking forever, or why their PC suddenly sounds like a jet engine spooling up. It feels broken or stuck, especially if they're coming from console where you just click the icon and it "just works" with nice sounds and visuals.

The issue (#18173) is suggesting to overlay the game's own XMB wallpaper + play that sound file (SND0.AT3) + maybe show the ICON1.PAM video in its original small frame during those stages. It's not faking or anything; it's just making the wait feel more like "yeah I'm booting the game on a PS3" instead of "watching an emulator compile shit". And since the wallpaper/sound assets are already extracted and playable in the GUI anyway, it's relatively low effort for decent immersion until full XMB launching matures.

with optional toggle of course, so "resulator people" can keep the boring text screen if they want. Not pointless, just cosmetic polish that costs almost nothing.

This may be a stupid question but I've recently learned how to replace textures while emulating PS2 games simply by checking how to apply texture replacements by other people and doing so with my own edited textures but one problem I'm having is that some of the textures appear to be... semi transparent for some reason? So far I've only edited stuff by selecting a part and adjusting the color, saturation etc of the selected part but the transparency makes it hard to see if the result is matching what I want it to look like ingame.
I assume people use a certain tool or method for this? What is it?

>>557173598

>>
>>557173392
Nah, full XMB emulation is a massive undertaking, months of dev time. Core team priorities are and should be compatibility list growth, fewer crashes, and better perf. The #18173 suggestion is literally just a cosmetic overlay using assets the emulator already extracts and can play. It's low-hanging fruit: optional toggle, minimal code changes, zero impact on runtime performance, and it makes the shader/ PPU/SPU compilation wait feel way less like "the emulator is dying" and more like "PS3 is just taking its sweet time booting this disc."

You can do quick QoL polish like this in parallel without touching the big scary XMB rewrite. I believe csual newbies would appreciate it a ton, and the "RESULATOR" purists can just turn it off in two clicks. Win-win.

The proper term is "alpha channel" actually, sorry.
I've never used Sai, but it should be possible. Per channel manipulation is a not uncommon thing to do when image editing.
In GIMP you just go over to the channels tab and then you can lock/hide/copy channels.
