'thrivindoing some experimentation with deltarune's movement system, specifically how it manages the characters stepping animations so i can recreate it for the forbidden utg game. current observations from 15 minutes of fucking around and testing stuff:the game looks like it keeps track of some kind of step progress. so when you move some value is added to that progress tracker and when it reaches a certain threshold it resets and the character steps.that added value is dependent on movement speed. in fact, stepping is directly proportional to space moved: moving through a given length of space will almost always result in exactly the same amount of steps, regardless of if your character is running or walking.diagonal movement does make you faster, the game doesnt seem to account for the diagonal and it just gives you both the up/down movement and the left/right movement. no pythagoras. that total distance also isnt used for the step progress counter, it only uses the total movement speed of one direction.the "stepping" value specifically triggers another countdown when it finishes. if you trigger a "step" and stop moving, kris will stay in the stepping animation for a few frames before going back to normal. this makes me think that there's some kind of toggle that the stepping value flips (probably one that goes down to zero automatically over time, ill call it "stepdown".) if it's above zero, the "stepping" spritesheet is used, and if it's zero then the "nonstepping" spritesheet is used.(1/2)

Even by "generic anime art" standards, the art for Arcaea was way more refined and mature-looking which fit with its story. But overtime I found the juxtaposition kinda charming. After all the games ARE at their core difficult rhythm games created by rhythm game autists, they're weeby in nature. It's not even professional level art, sure the devs updated the sprites in the PC game to be less amateur-looking but you can still tell something is "off" about them compared to corporate moe art.All that to say is if you're jugding NOISZ by the artstyle alone, it really isn't the type of game you think it is. If you're judging NOISZ by the way half the devs have pronouns in their bio, it's ALSO not what you think it is.
