For those who have played 2D games from the 4th and 5th gen, what are some games from this era with memorable enemy designs that would fit my game in your opinion? added headless mode to my autoplaying emoji game, meaning i can run the game without graphics and as fast as possible, so i can run a battle simulation in 1-2 seconds. this allows me to run thousands of battles for balance purposes. so i ran 100 battles for each matchup for existing 4 weapons (gun, sword, bow, dagger) and picture are the results. it took 50 minutes total so i need to improve performance, since in the future ill want to also test different builds as i add items and ill probably end up running over 100k battles per balance report. but for now its good enough

Why is there a strip of light on the chin, despite being in a shadow?
The shadow reaching along the chin into the lit half of the face would indicate that this area is where the "underside" begins, but then there's a highlit running along the chin in the shadow opposite of the light source from the left. Then of course the eyes are derpy but that goes without saying.

It depends highly on the task. I'd say for what I'm doing now (implementing each weapon and making it as juicy as possible), the improvement in productivity is 1.5x. For building the engine itself it was a 10x improvement. The main benefit, however, is lower cognitive overload, just lower usage of your brain, which frees your brain up to either work longer, work on other projects, or do other brain intensive activities during the day. In any case, it's definitely worth it, and only going to get cheaper as time passes. You just need to know where it's saving you time and where it isn't, although for most tasks it's saving you either time or cognitive effort.

The day leading to The Game Awards 2025 was amongst the most exciting of my life. After 2.5yrs of passionately working on Highguard, we were ready to reveal it to the world. The future seemed bright.
Everyone I knew who had any connection to the team or project had the same sentiments:

“I trust this team wholeheartedly.”
“If there’s one project nobody in the industry is worried will fail, it’s yours.”
“This has mainstream hit written all over it.”
“There’s no way this will flop.”

The internal pre-reveal feedback, even from unbiased sources, was quite positive, and where it was negative, it was constructive, and often actionable. People who played the game, including us, had a blast. And since we were an independent, self-published studio built with royalties in mind, many of us were hoping this could finally be the thing that broke the millennial financial curse.

But then the trailer came out, and it was all downhill from there. Content creators love to point out the bias in folks who give positive previews after being flown out for an event, but ignore the fact that when their negative-leaning content gets 10x the engagement of the positive, they’ve got just as much incentive to lean into a disingenuous direction, whether consciously or not.
The hate started immediately. In addition to dogpiling on the trailer, I personally came under fire due to my naïveté on Twitter, which almost all of my now-former coworkers had learned to avoid during their previous game launches. After setting my Twitter account to private to protect my sanity, many content creators made videos and posts about me and my cowardice, amassing millions of views and inadvertently sending hundreds of angry gamers into my replies. They laughed at me for being proud of the game, told me to get out the McDonald’s applications, and mocked me for listing having autism in my bio, which they seemed to think was evidence the game would be “woke trash.” All of this was very emotionally taxing.

The hardest part of a game is the technical bits, and once you get those out of the way you can begin experimenting and building off of those systems.
For example, I've spent the last 4 or so months putting together a combo system. It's relatively simplistic at the moment in terms of what you can actually do, but it's also incredibly easy to add more to. Legit, this thing is incredibly customizable and I made certain it would be that way. You can adjust the direction of attacks, the distance, the timing, which attacks they lead into, the conditions upon which you trigger certain attacks, and basically build entire chains with ease. Thus, when it comes time for me to REALLY get into it, I can easily expand upon it.
I accomplished this via a public class as well as a node and graph system.
That's all that matters. Programming. Art is for later

Let me tell you something about a ranking system.
-Aggression. Measured by how often you successfully attacked enemies.
-Combo. How high you were able to combo on average
-Lethality. How quickly you killed enemies and cleared encounters on average
-Survivability. How little damage you took.
-Style. How many different attacks you used in a combo on average.
-Unreliant. How few items you used.
All are accomplished via either float timers or int counters. For example, aggression is accomplished via two counters, attacks and successful attacks.
Attack goes up whenever you attack, successful attack goes up whenever you land a hit, detected via hitbox. At the end of a combat encounter, your successful attacks are divided by the attack number, and then multiplied by 100.
The more attacks landed, the higher your aggression percentage.
Combos are done via a timer. When you start attacking, there is a timer. This basically checks a list of all the possible attacks in the game, and the more of those get checked off, the better. Done via a Hashset. Repeating the same attacks, even for different combos, is a penalty.
Lethality is pretty simple, actually. It’s literally just an invisible stopwatch timer for a combat encounter. The lower the timer, the better.
And so on.
Is that not thought out enough for you?
I more focus on the opposite. How does it work rather than how does it feel. This is the only way to avoid feature creep.

I hope you have atleast a basic view manager where in love.update/love.draw it does an "if game_current_view == menu, intro, game" and so on to seperate them. As for the imaginary boundaries thing you should seperate that into its own button structure aswell. Yes, they are separated in love.draw. (love.update only changes the intro scene to the menu scene.)
It feels weird that the entirety of the game state is based on the mouse and the current scene and that the drawing of the screen is based on that. I think I'd like to somehow define the scenes/clickable buttons as a table, then those instructions on how to draw the scene are passed to draw. If I keep going with what I have, I'll have the draw function containing how to draw each scene as a very long if, elseif, elseif, etc. statement. Not terrible. But may get confusing and slow me down later.
Alright, I've made my decision. The only thing I'm going to change is to make the function for checking the imaginary boundaries for the drawn buttons, will also tell the draw function how/where/if to draw the buttons.
