I'm curious how early computerized mahjong worked before ML was feasible. Like you have some objective metrics like score, opponent calls, shanten (actually idk how the fuck you'd even algorithmically calculate shanten), waits, suji, etc. you could use to make rough heuristics for how safe a discard is and how much value is being lost, and with that roughly calculated the EV of a given discardPerhaps at a low enough shanten you could brute force check every possible winning hand (assuming every tile improves shanten). I can maybe see something like do that approach is <3 shanten, otherwise play braindead efficiency bot with a handful of hardcoded rules that switches to hard fold at the slightest sight of danger. But anything more complex than that doesn't seem feasible.
