I think I just don’t understand this genre of game. You just wander around a big multiplayer map picking up items and randomly getting in gunfights. There is more gameplay variety in individual Halo missions than in the entirety of this new Marathon from what I’ve experienced. I think the art direction is cool. The game feels good to play. It’s an interesting sci-fi world. But my first impression of the gameplay is that it’s pretty dull. I’ll try playing again later but I haven’t yet seen what would keep me coming back.

As someone who enjoyed Hunt Showdown (though that’s more an extraction shooter lite) and Tarkov, I just do not vibe with this game at all. Something feels off about it. Like every aspect of an extraction shooter has just been handled wrong. I don’t feel any tension or excitement. I’m not forming a personal attachment to my gear or weapon set ups. It feels too dead between areas. It all just feels bland. I love the art style but nothing else is gripping me with this. It also feels like PvP is incredibly sparse and I’m not sure if there are specific areas where players will converge to fight. At least in Hunt every team has th same objective so you’re very likely to clash with each other and Tarkov has designated hot spots (like Dorms) where you’re very likely to encounter other players. So far, I’ve been to each major area and had one, extremely brief fight. It’s not clicking

I solo wiped an entire squad while my team died to bots only for another team to show up to kill me (I at least got one of them). One of the normgroids on the team was saying he was having loads of fun despite the fact that contributed absolutely nothing to the team and spent 15 minutes looting. If skilled players like me aren't having fun, I really dont know what to say. The gunplay is absolutely ass. It just feels like whoever shoots first is going to auto win the fight since the TTK is stupidly low. There's no fucking skill expression, it's just, I'M BEAMING YOU DOWN AND NOW YOU'RE GOING TO DIE I GUESS. As a PvE player I'm enjoying this game a lot, love it so god damn much.Love the quests, the atmosphere, the gameplay loop, everything but there is a glaring problem and I'd like to get a sound off if I'm in the right or wrong because almost my entire gaming library and what I usually play are PvE games.This is my first extraction shooter and I thought I was going to dislike it but I'm not, however, from watching countless videos and streams of Arc Raiders and Tarkov I see the problem with this game and it's why I'm getting so bored.So, I know, the game is set on an abandoned planet from a destroyed colony but it just doesn't feel lived in like Arc Raiders or Tarkov and I'm not even talking about humans, just... alive?Like in the other extraction shooters Ive seen there's enemy factions shooting each other, there's patrols, there's something as basic as a robot in Arc Raiders doing things that make it look like it has a jobThis though? The UESC drop down like their from Reboot with incoming game and all they do is briefly patrol a area with large structures and then disappear/despawn. You might come across one area where there are little explode bugs but you know they're always going to be there where as in other extraction shooters theres more patrols things doing thingsI can't explain it real well and I'm sorry; I rarely come to /vg/, let alone 4chan anymore but I did want to get this frustration out somewhere. Honestly, if the game was free I could see the potential. They could definitely have most of the kinks ironed out in a few months. Unfortunately with a $40 price tag the game will be dead on arrival and they will announce end of service this year.
Been playing for a bit and one thing I think the game needs is a quicker way to return after a failed run. I just spawned, lost a fight with a vandal and now thats another 5 mins to get back into a game. Maybe a redeploy function with a sponsor kit would be better.

I don't get menu complaints, there's like 3 options and they're all pretty obvious. gameplay is kind of mediocre. I never have any fucking ammo so I just waltz across the map and hope to find some (I don't) while not getting murdered. extracting is pretty cancer to, someone is ALWAYS waiting for you. I've given up on trying to get out first and just park my ass on an extract and let someone else activate it. playing with randos is also cancer, no one uses their mic and everyone has different objectives and leave as soon as they're done theirsthis game is like if someone took borderlands, forced you into co-op, added hostile players, and deleted all of your gear every other run. basically ruins any sort of pacing for the story segments and you don't give a shit about the loot since you're not going to keep it anyways. oh also instead of blastig through zones you're doing 1 engage and then running around like a hobo because no ammo / medsidentity crisis

I think where I’m lost is this was a project long in the making and if we’re going off olden leaks of D2, talking like late 2019ish-2020 people were saying “saw something that looks like a PvPvE gambit mode” , I mean the bones aren’t the worst, I’ve had some fun farting around, the itemization is pretty decent as you start questing(though ammo gets tight) and it’s easy to get back in the fight if you’re totally blown out, but this just feels like a painfully ordinary game for the times. I was actually expecting infinitely more shameless fuckery and for the bit I’ve played the couple of earnable cosmetics are nice but obviously a solid color skin and stickers is whatever. I still return back to a feeling I felt in the testing and it’s “who is this game going to be for?” I don’t see sweats sticking around because seldom like this kind of questing and you can’t really go too min/max with how flimsy stuff can be if you die, and casuals are going to be discouraged when they’re constantly outplayed and need to win fights in contested zones. I just dunno. Fucking CoD had DMZ for free and while it had issues, it still was something to do.

Some of the abilities seem to have a few seconds before they actually activate when you hit their respective key bind, so you just end up dying with the low ttk before you get anything off. I'm not a fan of the graphics, its got this Roblox-meets-starfield with a splash of paint soulless vibe to it.

I can actually believe Peanut genuinely likes the game because it's a new FPS and he just likes playing games.
It never feels like I have a fair duel with a team, it's always me cheesing them or them cheesing me with a cheeky flank. They/me also just die instantly the moment they start shooting due to the ridiculous TTK. I'm sure it gets better the more valuable your gear, but I don't want to stick around to find out. The gameplay loop is simply not for me. It feels like I spent 10 minutes looting literal garbage (to afford 1/4 of a decent kit) just to die to some guy who saw us getting attacked by AI.

Marathon feels like the worst of extraction raiders, nothing good or fun about this gameplay.
