The main issue with them was how overly complicated they were for a lot of people due to the amount of options (even though obviously people just stuck to a select few "good" ones) so they cut it in less than half but now that auto-runes exist in the client and everyone uses Blitz, Porofessor or what have you, maybe it'd be fine to bring back masteries to add another layer of player expression.
