STH3 told a better story with Shadow than SA2 did. It's a standard revenge plot. The moment Shadow remembers that Maria said to protect people, he changes his course completely, it's stupid. Movie Shadow is pursuing revenge out of hurt and being goaded into it by Gerald. He just wants to be left alone in the beginning but is constantly pursued by GUN. He knows Maria doesn't want him to hurt people, but his history of being looked at in fear and being seen as the monster just finally culminates in him believing it about himself. He thinks he has no choice, that he was everything they saw him as. The death of Maria hurt him so much because she and Gerald were the only people who saw him as a person. Maria treated him as a friend, she taught him to skate, she reassured him that he wasn't what everyone saw him as. Shadow feels guilt over what he does to Tom when Sonic walks in, he realizes he's done the same thing that was done to him, but tries to brush it off. When he's attacked by Super Sonic and fights back as Super Shadow, he starts goading Sonic to try and kill him, because he has no reason to continue existing. He just wants to die because the pain hurts so much. He has no hope, he felt like he had no choice in any of this, that he wasn't who Maria saw him as, but Sonic holding back from killing him at the last second and ending the fight in spite of the pain he's feeling, and his words that they always have a choice is enough of a rope for Shadow to grab onto.SA2 Shadow being introduced as a cackling villain and then doing a 180° just because is stupid.
