Should I take the Super Mario Galaxy 2 Pill?

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a game I loathe. I despise it. It is the definition of shovelware. Of slop. So many of the levels are basic modifications of old levels, such as:
>The same level as before but you now have 30 seconds instead of 60
>The same level as before but one hit and you're dead
>The same level as before but enemies moves twice as quickly
Yet this game got crazy scores. Some people even call it the best game on the Wii. A game that has maybe 33% the amount of original content as its predecessor.
If I followed in its footsteps and farted out levels by the dozens, making small modifications such as time limits and enemy counts, I could quadruple the content of my game with minimal effort.

I tried a simultaneous action thing and it was okay but there was lag going on. Honestly I'd be better off making a real time system like League tft if I want that many enemies.

So ill keep it down to roughly six-ten enemies/allies max.

Its put a real hole in my summoner class plans though.

I think after this if this version does not get much attention, ill probably do one more tactics game attempt then look for another genre.

How were you implementing the AI?

I was using GOAP with A* pathfinding on all my AI entities for a while, and it didn't scale well. I switched over to a completely Utility based AI using a shared Dijkstra heatmap and now things are extremely fast.

Might be something worth considering depending on what the behavior is that you need.

the problem I was running into with A* is that each entity has to find it's own path to it's target. so it's a point-to-point with overhead scaling per entity.

By using a dijkstra "heatmap" emitted by a target, all entities can read this common heatmap and decide how to move. Since many entities are sharing a common context, this approach is ideal for "swarm" behavior. Depending on how you implement things, these heatmaps can have a concept of terrain/danger/cost. They're useful for steering contexts as well. You can overlap as well for things like "move here but avoid the lava" type situations. You can always mix and match depending on the context. More than one heatmap can be applied, and they can be summed. I still use A* for things like drawing paths on the screen and what not.
