Has any new technology/industry fumbled as hard as AI? It’s like every major player is retarded trying to sale increasingly worse products as the best solution to all problems and the majority of service providers are in a race to the bottom.

It’s weirdly comparable to 3D printing that was supposed to be a futuristic super technology, but the majority of the use is hobbyist shit. Those companies at least caught on quick.

it feels like they are doing the same as social networks or Microsoft nowadays, but without the backing and utility they provide.
that or it's Collective Shout and payment providers that are still more concerned about fictional children and queer people than actual people

There's been many tech-based hype bubbles in modern history. You can go back to the 1840's with railway mania. Most likely scenario is the hype will settle (probably accompanied by a stock market crash), a bunch of the startups will die, the big players will continue to be big players, and the tech will continue to be used, just with tempered expectations of its usefulness

AI feels like one of the weirdest industry fuck ups we’ve seen. There was never a real boom race or explosive early gold rush. Instead it kind of just went from early fumbling attempts right into enshittification of functionally three companies churning out increasingly worse, heavily censored models aimed at mundane, sanitized tasks.
We never got that Wild West golden age everyone romanticizes. We went right from, casually saying “oh cool, a dumb AI toy,” with a few jumping in while most didn’t, and somehow that snowballed into the whole world assuming GPT would turn into a T-800 overnight. Meanwhile, the companies themselves basically begged to be regulated to death as soon as they saw an industry existed so they could pivot into glorified customer service systems or whatever safe corporate approved thing they imagine their future to be.
Which is really weird for an industry that is functionally less than a decade in. Doesn’t even feel like there is hype to die down just an industry that instantly went to shit.
Like if early internet went from late 80s early 90s straight into the current state of it.

Honestly feel like I'm living in a different world from you. TUI AI assistants (Claude Code, Codex, etc.) have made my job 10x easier. And the perplexing fact that most of my coworkers can't figure out prompting means that I just get to have all my work done 10x faster, not get 10x more work or be laid off.
I think in the narrow sense of 'AI porn generation has been fumbled' it's probably true, but this is a failure of laws, not of AI itself. The tech is there but nobody wants to be 'the legally questionable porn enabling company' due to lawsuit fears, payment processor issues, etc.
Anyway, if this is about Grok, that's probably a result of Elon selling usage of their supercluster 1 to Anthropic. All that compute that used to be theirs is now being used by Anthropic, so they're probably cutting back on things that weren't making them money before. But to go back to your first question:
>Has any new technology/industry fumbled as hard as AI?
Yeah? VR/AR tech. Crypto. NFTs.

Think this is actually a part companies are really failing to get across. Take Microsoft’s copilot ad
https://youtu.be/Ndj9Jk-tGKo?si=DTO35Fh6Ctfva9Ae

You get a “it can read a spreadsheet” which ok cool probably actually useful. “It knows who has the best leadership.” It fucking what? Why would that be in a spreadsheet? “It can predict who can have over 100 tackles?” How? How is that in the spreadsheet data.

Like they advertise actual uses and then detail their own ad by suggesting the AI intrinsically knows shit it can’t.

I've been out of the AI story sphere.
I last remember playing AI Dungeon in 2020/2021 and it was incredible. Obviously, AI has fucking exploded since then.

What'll give me the peak-AI Dungeon but possibly even better experience, with no restrictions on content? Preferably something that's good for both adventure and porn.
Idc if I have to pay a small amount for it if I can replicate those highs

Yeah ofc trying to sell it in areas it can't actually help much in is bad. There's another layer though, we all remember the laugh we had about 'prompt engineer' being a job title, but some people literally just can't prompt. They can't figure out how to tell the AI what to do.
My job is IT, basically when systems go down or have problems people come to me to figure out why. AI is -amazing- at this. Searches through logs and traces that used to take a whole workday get found in 5 minutes after I hook up Claude Code to our company's internal tools and prompt it correctly.
What's most confusing to me is that I should be feeling like "uh oh, I'll be out of a job soon", but I don't feel like that, because most of my coworkers can't seem to figure out how to do any of this. I do my best to help them but I find them still doing things the old way, sometimes one will come to me for help and I'll point my setup at their problem and have it solved in minutes.

I do think we should update some links. For one, storypad-qt no longer exists. Replacing it with Marinara, a neat project with agentic use cases for roleplay (text adventure style stuff), chat, and writing would, along with updating the news like that one guy suggested, would be nice for next thread.
