The best way I learned pixel art was to steal, because most pixel art game assets are less than 48x48 that means you can copy things fairly easily unlike a painted illustration.
Take a character asset that you like, put it in your editor, and then by copying and modifying their parts you try and make that same character face a different direction.
If you have a profile/side facing view, it's easiest to start with a 45, if you have a front facing view it's easiest to turn them around and make it a back facing view.
This type of practice is super easy and cuts out all of the paralytic thinking that strikes you when facing a blank canvas with no palette. Here you know all the limits you're working with, size, colors, etc and you only need to solve how to rework this limited space a small amount.
I would do this until I made 8 directions for a character, then I'd animate them a bit. This will get you started.

The pumpkins were 1066 tris which isn't too bad given their size but I managed to get them down to 823 without any real loss of aesthetic value. They no longer have a bottom though but that's okay, these ones will always be in the dirt slightly. I also saved the original pumpkin as a separate object in case I was lone pumpkins somewhere in a pile or some shit and they will still have their bottoms.

i do aim to improve some of the animations, the walking one was the first I created so it needs the most improvement.

I'm aiming to have something for DD69, so any improvements to animations will be done afterwards.

Your not the first to criticise the appearance of the character but I'm still not seeing where to improve. Maybe the bad texturing gives the appearance of too broad shoulders. The hair does need imrpovements.

109 days left. I didn't do my full 5 hours yesterday because I procrastinated and then got sleepy. I decided to defer one game feature (a hall of fame type of thing) and changed another one so it takes less time and is better, because it's a reputation-gated passive achievementlike reward rather than a simple ongoing expense. I saved myself maybe a week of UI dev time at very little cost to my game. It still won't be enough to finish it until my money runs out, but maybe I'll get other ideas.

Won 5fps after a fuckton of work. Absolutely not fucking worth the effort.
Decided to take a vacation from optimization, and to slightly unfuck my map and incline/bounce physics.
Now regular objects behave more like proper liquid/sand and the map is slightly less horrible to look at.

Next step is splitting physics logic between dumb objects and actual characters.
Not sure which movement logic I will take inspiration from however. Ultimately it's for an RTS so it won't matter too much as long as it's cheap to process and get the job done. Probably Half-Life.

The valuable people will be the ones who can direct AI, design systems, make taste calls, integrate pipelines, validate outputs, ship fast, and turn vague ideas into working games.

The replaceable people will be the ones still saying “AI can’t code,” “AI art has no soul,” “real devs do it manually,” or “this is just another fad.”

That mindset is career poison.

Studios are not going to pay full salaries for work an AI-assisted developer can do faster, cheaper, and with fewer handoffs.

The split is going to be brutal.

A small number of AI-native designers, engineers, artists, producers, and technical leads will become absurdly productive.

Everyone else will be competing for fewer and fewer jobs while insisting the tool replacing them is fake.

You are either learning to build games with AI, or you are training yourself into unemployability.
