For example, the Rouge of today is not the same Rouge that was introduced in SA2. She started off fairly bratty and kind of tempermental, with her coquettish side being much more subtle. Fast forward to today and she's pretty much just a straight femme fatale girl boss (at least in IDW) with her coquettish nature front and center. Similarly, Knuckles wasn't really explosively angry until Sonic X rolled around. Compare him in the adventure games to what we have now. He actually seems much more like a perfect foil to sonic in those games with how considerably reserved he is. Hell, his first interaction with Rouge he's trying NOT to fight her. I don't know if that was supposed to be some kind of narrative carryover from SA1, but if anything it demonstrates the kind of nuanced characterization that has been lost over time.So yeah, they're opposites. Knuckles is Blaze (retarded hotheads) and Sonic is Rouge (cool professionals). Unless you're factoring in all the third-party media, then Sonic is a slightly more capable Phillip J. Fry and Blaze acts like an AI assistant.

They all have rough patches usually 100%ing them but I don't think that alone is enough to say they're bad.So many of these games once you play them just aren't nearly as bad as they're described.
