I'm starting to understand why people say don't make RPGs. When your stat system isn't a simple damage reduces health it gets complex real fucking fast. I'm getting closer to having a functional stat system that supports additive and multiplicative stats and multiple sources for them (skills, equipment, buffs) that can be expanded in places where I need to expand when I come up with new special cases for skills and whatever. It might be overengineered but I'd rather not rewrite everything every time I want to add something.

i am considering an early american colony/manifest destiny economic simulation game in the style of patrician. likely starting after the first great migration (1630s) and running through the development of rail networks. the main idea is edutainment, but there should still be a fun gameplay loop. how do i keep it from becoming a game about looking at spreadsheets? should the player roleplay as a single individual/lineage of individuals as in CK? I anticipate railroading political/social developments/conflict regardless of player actions.

>would be interesting to see sloppers make something
That's the problem, they can't. And when they do, it's slop. It's the opposite of interesting. Sloppers have been observing eachother put out flops for the past couple years and now they are scared to make anything because they got a reality check that nobody wants their unimaginative slop. Slop is the result of blending every generalized thing together and making the most bland generic thing possible.

In order to appreciate or be capable of making things that are unique, you need to have a soul. Sloppers are perplexed and even angry that the world doesn't appreciate their ability to type a prompt and press enter, because they have no soul.

You should listen to Chris Zukowski. Genres don't get stale. Incrementals have been growing in popularity since Cookie Clicker how many years ago? And they continue to grow. If your genre is getting hot, it's probably just going to continue.

Never forget, the gaming industry is on an infinite growth curve. Every baby born right now is a future gamer. The market will never stop growing. Whenever you release your game, it is going to be the best time there has ever been to release that game.

You're just making things up. Whatever causes you to act like this, you should do some introspection.

>Chris is NOT a game dev, and it's really telling that retards here are now taking advice from literal marketers
He provides actual data to prove things. Like the infinite growth of hot genres. They don't go stale, hot genres like incrementals and simulation games have continued to grow every year for like 15 years.

TLDR:
He provides real data. You make things up (also known as lying). I know who I'm going to listen to.

Hollow Knight isn't the peak of the genre. It's the baseline. [Hollow Knight, but better] is guaranteed to make tens of millions of dollars of revenue, but no one is capable of making one cheaply. Reasonable competitors like Ori also cost over ten million dollars to make.

This trailer just released and gained roughly 4k wishlists in less than 24 hours, so there's obviously still high demand for the genre. (I highly doubt they'll ever release it, and if they do, it'll be in an incomplete state with far less content than Hollow Knight.) Broke solodev retards releasing [existing game, but worse] are somehow always blindsided when no one wants to play their garbage.

Staleness is not the issue, it's the fact the bar will be raised and the odds of someone making a near identical game as mine is not 0%.

Imagine you were making Cookie Clicker and had complete faith it will succeed. But then suddenly you notice an upsurge in games quite similar to it. Not quite Cookie Clicker like but the attention is there. And then it happens, someone makes something like it. It gets first mover advantage. And then more start cropping up. Slowly the bar gets raised further and further as newer ones appear. Why buy your simplistic Cookie Clicker when others made the simplistic game first and some even raised the bar further and further whether it was art, mechanics, or both? You're no longer first, you were beaten to the market and your idea is now just seen as a knockoff that doesn't bring anything new to the table.

That is what I am afraid of right now. I am afraid someone will end up on the same premise as mine and potentially with art quality much higher than mine (I'm a terrible artist).
>>
>>576534925

dis nigga on the verge of a mental breakdown
>>
>>576535589
>I am afraid someone will end up on the same premise as mine
I understand that from your initial post, and I have the same concern about my game, but the fact is if someone hasn't already made your game concept that means you don't even really have 1 competitor yet. You can afford to be #2 or #5 so don't stress.

You can release to a genre with 3,000 competitors and still succeed because the gaming market is so insanely huge. Platformers are the only genre this doesn't apply to because there are 1,000,000 competitors which makes anyone releasing a platformer a fool who seemingly wants to fail.

>>576536325
Unlike my example there are already games in the genre, only one that's partly similar albeit with terrible implementation. This is the first game I've made where the odds of actually getting 1000 reviews is likely. It terrifies me knowing that may be ripped away from me if I don't release fast enough. 1000 reviews is the point where I can just not look for a job and just do full time gamedev.

>Hollow Knight isn't the peak of the genre. It's the baseline. [Hollow Knight, but better] is guaranteed to make tens of millions of dollars of revenue
not really the question, genre viability is rarely about the actual ground-breaking or defining game. It's more about the genre or sub-genre itself offers as the foundation to theory-craft with. And what devs can expand on or change, to still give a worthwhile or new experience.
HK clones burnt out relatively fast because the gameplay template is inherently limited and was mostly exhausted with the influx of clones. Most people won't care if you offer higher production values or scope, because they're fast-fowarding to what playing it will be like.
Which is why a lot of retarded devs don't understand that just bolting on a lame gimmick to a stale genre rarely works, because you're not changing the core formula
>>

Voxels: how much of a meme are they? How difficult are they to implement in comparison with the usual 3D models? I don't know the first thing about them by the way, I'm legit curious.

pic unrelated
>>
>>576545808
voxers are 3d models, it's just a bunch of cubes arranged in a specific way
>>
>>576545808
theyre as deep or shallow as you want. And you can go beyond cubes.
if youre interested in dynamic simulated worlds, learn them
>>
>>576545808
voxels are boring and only work for minecraft. you should just get into regular 3d modeling.
>>
>>576542947
>>576544609
I think It's better if you start with simple low poly shapes and then gradually increase density for each phase of the sculpt. The early simple phases help you form the foundation.

How do you answer?

Online I can give an estimate, 1.5 years, yet irl I hesitate to give a solid number. Almost as if I don't believe I can actually pull it off. Why? Is the low confidence because I am unsure how much time certain things will take me to develop? I wish I was able to give a confident answer. Guess that's that. I've ran out of excuses. I'm gamedevving more than I used. In the past it was a huge task just trying to get myself to dev 2 hours in a single day. But then I just ran out of excuses and suddenly I was able to focus without issue
>ran out of youtube videos I wanted to watch badly
>ran out of interest in posting on 4chan since this place is getting filled with more and more normies who clearly I don't vibe with
>ran out of hope of making it in the financial markets
>ran out of hope of making it in the wagie world
>mental restriction prevents me from playing video games as much as I'd like until after I make it
I put one foot in front of the other with the sole hope I get some form of escape with gamedev. Rest, I long for it, yet I get none. Sleep itself is respite from being alive, the dreams within, I don't carry the problems I have out here in there. I am free and at peace in there. I just wish things turned out differently. Gamedev, it's my final hope to achieve my dream. I wish I could finally rest. And yet now that I've had most fun and avenues of making it taken away from me. I can somehow sit here and dev for way more time than I used to, or at least it feels that way. Even the frustrating work. There are no other avenues left for me.

Any idea on how to improve this? I have enjoyed putting this game together, which I guess you'd call a "paint game" since it requires no rolling, and only choices of where to paint and which resources to go after. My issue is that because there is no rolling or randomness or other functions, it has become a "puzzle game" where there is (or would be, if I could figure it out) only a select few ways to "beat" the game, it's a "math" game where you have to calculate the best moves ahead of time, knowing the values of things, and planning ahead. It was a fun concept, but now that it's done I see there isn't much utility here, just novelty.

Because he was holding court in his discord. He had Osh cornered in front of everyone and dressed him down. He was probably pestering him about the 2D sprite head on a 3D body for ages in the gamedev threads but couldn't get Osh to cave. So he just straight up embarrassed him in the discord.

Shortly after, OSH literally defaced his own main character and ruined it's original design. Because Betz got in his head. Because Betz sees game developers as pets that he can collect and train and control and then put on a circus during his expo where he runs advertisement for Stake gambling. It's insane.
>>
>>576574242
>Because Betz sees game developers as pets that he can collect and train and control and then put on a circus
Even after kicking them out, like he did with Fygoon. Kicked him out and then put his picture in that troll game of the jam. He sees Fygoon as his toy to play with even after banning him from the discord and v3.

If you can't complete a fully working prototype with all the major features for your game within a few weeks at most, then you probably shouldn't be working on that game. You should instead be working on making yourself a better game developer. The retards who spend years on the same NGMI garbage project are really spending 90%+ of their time learning gamedev and less than 10% actually productively working on their game.
>>
>>576575697
>spend years on the same NGMI garbage project are really spending 90%+ of their time learning gamedev

In actuality though, and I can say this from observation, sloppers aren't even getting that far. They can't even put together a prototype. That's what amazes me. But the bubble popping will be the definitive end of gamedev dreams for millions of people because there is no way they will muster the nerve to actually buckle down and learn to do it.

And all those devs who already shoveled slop onto steam? That will be the end of their output. Only big companies with money will afford to slop it up anymore.

Useless self indulgent blog post follows, filter "days left" to never see one of these again.
I hate summer so much. I hate summer even when I'm clearing snow from the driveway and slip on the ice and then a dump truck drives by and splashes me with muddy frozen mulch, I think to myself at least it's not summer. The heat itself is not the problem. It's the sweat, the stickiness, and having to take two showers a day or stay under the AC the whole time.
Didn't buy sweets or bananas today, so that's sort of a victory. Got to take whatever victories you can. I celebrated this victory with a big chicken sandwich. There's melted cheese in there too.
Yesterday I worked on a prototype for another game. Playing it is a lot of fun (for me, no one else's played it) and I feel like it will be take less time to make than to finish my current game and have more mass appeal too. I'm too old hand at this to fall for it... again. That new project smell is so alluring but it's trickery. Besides, I got only 85 days left until my money runs out and if my gamedev career is going to come to an end, I'd prefer my current game to be the monument. And if it somehow makes it, then I'll make the other game a bit later.

maybe your shitty simple ideas are worth more than you think.

that's why i think being too serious about gamedev can backfire. often those irrational stupid ideas that seems "pointless" are exactly where the fun is at.

but we are conditioned that making money is all about making serious products and making very serious good decisions. which isn't how the entertainment industry works though.

adrev in games was tried during the flash era
it got decimated by the rise of video platforms
the rise of well paid video platforms led to the rise of the lets player and combined with the remnants of flash indie devs led to the golden era of indiedev
then the ad companies tightened their belts on video platforms too and now all the letsplayers are gatekept behind influencer labels and only nepodevs with the cash to do payola with letsplayer labels get to make it
all that because adrev cut their payout a bit
as far as adrev in games again, yeah right
it's so joever

Some engines like Godot expose low-level APIs that kind of mimic developing in libraries like Raylib.
You can then decide to implement something the lower-level way or the high-level way (e.g. rendering textures with RenderingServer but using nodes for UI elements)

I've got some CS knowledge (at least my undergrad is in it) but I've basically not used it ever since never getting a job out of uni. Is it recommended to backtrack into Teach Yourself Computer Science or is winging it more viable if you already at least have some experience programming with multi-file projects ~1k LOC or so in length with file access, etc.
>>
i feel like gamedev is about accepting what you can make. with flaticon.com i could literally make every game i could imagine. but it'll always be 2D with ugly icon art. and ofc no animations other than shakes/rotations/scaling.

it's like accepting that you can date a 4/10 girl, rather than waiting 20 years hoping you can date the 9/10 one.

maybe this is also fomo related. "while i'm making this abstract icon art game, i could be making my dream game". when in reality your dream game isn't in reach at all.

actually climbing your way up with simple games first to get budget (or trust for a kickstarter) is much more realistic.

You'll likely be using frameworks or engines to make games if you're serious about shipping something, knowledge in CS is largely irrelevant in that case because most algorithms and low-level data structures will be hidden from you.
>or is winging it more viable if you already at least have some experience programming with multi-file projects ~1k LOC or so in length with file access, etc.
You're severely underqualified if your biggest project has only been 1k LOC.

The fastest way forward is to pick a video game engine and to create 'throwaway games' (easy to implement prototypes of existing games with 1 level) for 3-6 months.

Alright tranny listen up you need to watch Harvard CS50. Then you need to build a linux, then once you do that start with vulkan and try to triforce... it will take 6 gorillion lines of code.
Now you can start, but actually you'll need to study textbooks about game engine architecture, then you will finally be able to make a game. But before you game your game you will need to make pong and then learn how to make a donut.

Is it the shapes the bullets form?
The way they move?
The fact that the bullets have a glow that merges when they intersect?

At the same time, I'm making a shoot 'em up with mouse controls, which I understand is blasphemous in the genre.

So many devs take the shitty platformer route in that situation. They are easy to make comparatively.

Him ending up with that game is the equivalent of Branno making Platform Gun as his first solo project. It's a game absolutely nobody asked for with a shitty fantasy and shitty gameplay and shitty art. He made it because it was what he could make. This sort of desperation leads to bad decisions and bad games. If that shit is all you can make you should work on your skills, not on shipping a game.

I think vision devs are a small subset of the whole. You gotta have a certain type of dedication and confidence to dev like that. They seem rarer than they are because they tend to dedicate themselves to multi-year projects that take forever to finish. Our own include troonwiz, Monomythdev and Boku. These are people who know what they're making though Boku doesn't have the skill to make what he wants to make so he's never gonna finish.

I think vision devs are also at larger risk of getting lost in the sea of shit. They're more likely to be the type of dev who just put their game into the internet and hoping people play it and like it enough to tell other people about it.

I agree and obviously it worked out for Jonas because of his youtube channel.

Still I think that you need to reach a certain level of skill before there's really any point in trying to commercialize your games. Obviously striving for too much perfection isn't good either. There's a middle ground there where the game is good enough to have an audience of some sort. Taking a game to where it's ready for a Steam release is a lot of extra effort and so is preparing for the actual Steam launch. I don't think it's worth going through all that unless the game's got something going for it. Of course every dev has to make that decision themself and sometimes that leads to games like Surface Breaker where everyone else but the dev knew how it would go.

I cannot make a game because I do not enjoy video games. I cannot improve on that fact I do not enjoy them because I am too stupid to articulate why I hated the games I "love."
I am stupid because I have rotted my brain from being a gooner.
I am a gooner because I do not enjoy life.

you cannot cure terminal goonerism with self volition because it's basically a prion disease, you completely lost self volition because it is a feature of your brain which you completely damaged and injured by using AI and gooning so much.
You have brain damage, I'm not even kidding, and that's where you're from: your brain. Fuck all the gay philosophy muh heart muh god shit, keep your personal schizo babble to yourself, what's happened is a fundamental and simple neurological issue.
You cannot help yourself intentionally. You lack all forms of self determination now, you cannot even control your preferred fetish anymore, you are a programmable slug now.
If you're lucky someone might take pity on you and cut off your dick and ball and turn you into a tranny, but then you'll just shove things up your ass for a prostate orgasm because of how much you are a degenerate.
Someone needs to tie you up and torture the hell out of you to reprogram you. That's how it works with all addicts and most addict fail even when they are forced to stop, sometimes they die from even trying.
Basically it's over, and you can appeal to whatever anecdotes and therapy bullshit you want but you cannot cure brain damage.

What anti AI retards fail to understand is that the AI generated assets aren't the product, they're just components. If I ask for an AI to produce sprites for a 2D top down game (which I don't btw, I only use it for coding) then that just means that the visual art isn't the product. The story, level design, mechanics, and general idea are what I'm making.

That's different from a slopper who just tells Claude "build a metroidvania, make no mistakes" and doesn't iterate or build tools to refine the experience.

Nobody is worried about AI. It's a joke.

That's what happens when you tell people they're going to be replaced or left behind year after year and nothing happens.

Youtube is even preparing to pull all slop content from their platform soon. It's over.

I told claude to never sign a commit again after I caught it doing that. sneaky bastard

already doing it and catching real creators. kurzgesagt or however the fuck that's spelt got taken down for looking like the slop clones of himself
>>
>>576618890
how come youtube is too retarded to double-check large pre-AI-established channels
>>
>>576619231
they didn't delete the channel, just shadow banned their latest video

Gotta break some eggs to make an omelet.

Next stop, itch.io and steam, spotify probably as well. Meta platforms like facebook and instagram will probably be the last to pull the rug, they are still training their AI. But everyone else is ready to give sloppers the boot.

Gonna be a great quarter to roast smores over the slop fire. Next year will be even better.

*but looks like they got in touch and unbanned
>>
what a wild ride this last year has been and will be
from AI is garbage at code, to AI is good at code, to AI is too good at code and you didn't make your game if you used AI at all in the process.
>>

^ still has no game

Yep. So much has changed.
>>
>>576620104
*and should be hung, drawn and quartered if you even glanced at AI for help instead of scouring the internet and finding a solution to a problem in an obscure forum post from 2007

you lost that bet, but the odds were in your favor, I get it.
>>
you were caught stealing reddit screencaps to pretend they were yours lol

>used AI
^still has no game
you didn't make your game
>>

The way things are going code should be the least of their concerns, especially if they work in 3D.
>>
>>576620675
I remember that lol. Slopper screencapped someone elses steam sales page.

Keep in mind, a slopper has no dignity or morals. Pulling stunts like that is trivial.
>>
>>576620865
nice try no-dev.
>>576620675
I'm not the AI spammer. I don't use AI for anything but code. I've been programming for 15 years.

I wish Steam would stop signing me out of Steamworks every week, it takes me an extra 3 minutes to check my sales
>>
at least you admit that you do spam, even if indirectly
>>
>you didn't make your game if you used AI
Yes, people do say that.

>AI is too good at code
Nobody says that.

The slop has already infected your mind. RIP
