Posted this webm in the last thread but need advice, I'm trying to come up with a setting for the game.
Does a sort of fantasy fight club manager game sound appealing? Like you hire and train fighters, you have to manage their energy, injuries and traits, sometimes they might even get permanent injuries, train their stats, you choose the best fighter for the upcoming fight, maybe you want a slow but strong brawler, or a fast fighter good at counter attacks or whatever.
Then during the fight you actually play as the fighter, since it's fantasy you could have tournaments where you fight all sorts of stuff.

>tfw newer system might not be what i want

>adjust code back to previous system
Well guess I could've worked on something else for my game. I spent 2 days or so of on and off work adjusting the code for this new system.

I don't feel like doing anymore gamedev today. This is demoralizing. Especially so with how many new devs are entering gamedev. My game has so much promise yet I can not muster up the will to work on it, why? Is it because I don't think I can actually pull it off as I see it in the mind palace?
>>
>>577466576
why are you calling me out like this

>>577466581
It's a funny thing. I felt the same. was forced to ship with several incomplete systems. I felt really bad. but then turns out people really liked the game. and they assume the full game will utilize the systems more fully(I hope so...)

I get exhausted from how much effort it is to put all the little things together. It visually looks so simple yet the work involved to achieve that is much more complex. Oh the Dragonborn pulling out a sword to attack this Giant in this campsite during a snowstorm? Uttering this sentence, seeing the visuals, all a very simple looking scene. Yet the work required to make all of this work? A lot.
>need 3D models of the character and enemy with all the required extras
>need 3D assets of the scenery and all the other bells and whistles required for it work with lighting
>need 3D model of the sword
>need animations of the character and enemy
>need code to just move the character
>need code to use a sword
>need AI pathfinding code for the enemy
>need AI combat code for the enemy
>need code for what the enemy drops on death
>need code for what happens if the character dies
>need a menu in case of a game over and all its associated code
>need an inventory menu too in case the player wins and picks up items
>need code for the items themselves to be able to get picked up
>need code for the inventory itself
>need code to save all the information of this scene
>need music and sfx for all the events that just took place
>need system that controls day/night cycle
>need system that controls weather cycle
>etc.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! I wish I was rich already. I can just contract a team. I want to make my dream games but the more I look at it the more I realize I have to make slop in hopes of getting rich and then moving on to my true desired game creations. At least then issues like getting stuck on something that ended up not being needed wouldn't be so demoralizing as I posted here >>577466581

I wish I could demoralize 90% of gamedevs, aspiring gamedevs, and those yet to be gamedevs just so I could lower the bar. At least then my odds would be improved. But instead I have to handle all this with a bar that just keeps getting raised.
>>
>>577468345
all that would only take about 80 hours. without AI. so a couple of weeks of poking around on your computer.

>>577467573
>was forced to ship with several incomplete systems
>people really liked the game
One of my last games was too dependent on too many systems. I couldn't see much reason to continue it when hope was so faint on it so I cancelled it. The newer game is simpler and seemingly more likely to succeed. Yet I have doubt in my abilities to pull it off.
>>

If you want long-term gains, you should always invest into an index ETF (one of the safe ones, at least) as soon as possible. Even if it dips, you'll always recover and make more money than you've started with a few years later, especially since you're collecting dividends.

based and christpilled
>>
>>577552616
at least you are not making things worse for anyone. you could be a politician or in a gang or something
>>
>>577551569
while it's solo indie, i would argue it's AA quality, at the very least it's 15 hours if you're really good at the game, most would take like 25 hours and has decent amount of replayability, and it would have content that rival AAA games in it's genre, the only things that would be really bad are no voice acting and the soundtrack is going to be copyright free music.
And it's kind of niche it's a mix of a popular and niche genre
>>577551921
it's an ue5 game it doesn't have the look of a cheap indie, i feel like pricing it lower than 15 will make people think that it's shit.
>>577552293
too much without having a nice soundtrack or voice acting, and at 20 i only need to sell 10k copies to reach my goal.
>>577552770
obviously i would be releasing demo and updates to it and try to create a community before i put it on steam it would have no chance if i just released it on steam just like that.
>>
>>577552616

>>
>>577552994
>obviously i would be releasing demo
ok so why worry about now whether to charge $15 or $20?
>>
>>577552770
it's legitimately good advice, I've said this in the past that I wouldn't even play whatever game they're making for free, and they don't even consider any other possibility than, it's not my type of game or something
>>
>>577553283
Worrying about shit that will never happen is much more fun than making games.
>>
>>577553283
How does releasing a demo affect the pricing?
>>
The $20 argument is pretty mundane. If you're claiming roughly 15–25 hours of content, replayability, and unusually high production value for a solo indie game, asking whether $15 or $20 makes more sense isn't inherently avaricious.

The more interesting thing is that the thread contains two completely different developer mindsets:

"I want to make a cool game and hopefully people like it."

versus

"I need to position this product correctly so I can sell 10,000 copies."

The latter is absolutely the vibe of >>577552994.

>>
>>577564225
Yeah, that statement is far too absolute to be a meaningful definition of professionalism.

“A sign of professionalism and experience is the realization that you cannot make a game alone and without a budget.”

There are several problems with it.

1. “A game” is an enormous category.

You absolutely can make a game alone, with essentially no monetary budget. The existence of solo-developed games across everything from tiny puzzle games and experimental projects to commercially successful indie games disproves the universal claim.

What you can't necessarily do alone and without a budget is make every kind of game.

There's an enormous difference between:

a two-week puzzle game
a solo RPG
a 2D platformer
a simulation
a multiplayer shooter
an open-world AAA-style game with thousands of assets, cinematics, voice acting, etc.

Saying “you cannot make a game alone” because the last category is impractical is like saying you cannot make a film alone because you can't personally operate a Hollywood production.

2. Solo development doesn't mean doing literally everything yourself.

3. “Professionalism” isn't synonymous with having employees or a budget.

A professional approach can mean understanding your constraints and designing the project around them.

In fact, there's something arguably more professional about saying:

“I'm one person, so I'm going to design a game whose scope one person can actually finish.”

rather than:

“I need 20 people and $2 million before I can make anything.”

The professional realization isn't “I cannot make a game alone.”

It's:

“I need to understand what I can realistically accomplish with the resources available to me.”

And that can lead to a solo project, a team project, or a heavily outsourced project depending on what you're trying to build.

I always see whiny developers who need to cope say this. If you don't want to solo dev, don't obviously, but you don't have to redefine a word just because you want to seem "solo."

It's not a selling point anyway and literally no one cares besides the most nerdy of gamers, so it really doesn't matter that much.

I redacted that section since the post was at the length limit and I didn't feel like making a multi-post post
also, I'm pretty sure that's a disagreement with what chatgpt said though I also don't disagree, since I am an engine dev doing everything myself, and I haven't personally purchased or used any assets anywhere
I also do not copy gpt programming, since for me, I enjoy the learning process and I make things I enjoy regardless of financial situations
also, I don't really care about definitions personally, I identified myself here as "an engine dev", however only for context, I usually simply do rather than define

I think to do over $10 your game really needs to compete with AA. You might have enough content but does your game have the production quality to get there? If you don't have that sort of 9/10 quality then you're gonna lose sales early on because of the price. Some of those people might pick it up on sale but by then it's too late. You want to price for those early sales to boost your Steam algo.

I have friends who complain that a game is too expensive when it's over 10 even when it's a genre they like. They gotta know through the demo that they love the game for it to be priced higher and still a release day purchase.

>>577553757
If 5 people play it then no matter what you price it at you won't get sales. If 50000 people play it then you might get away with a higher price.

Obviously very few games are truly made by one person. I'd say when it's you working alone doing like 90% of the work then you're a solo dev.

>are they even profiting at that point?
Hell no. They launched at a steep discount and the game still hit mixed with only 200 reviews. For 40 developers it needs to gross millions. To pay 40 developers a poorfag wage of 1k a month they need 480k for the whole year. They're located in Moldova so maybe that's enough but I doubt the game's gonna get there.

The game is a low effort combination of a bunch of indie game mechanics. Nothing original and what they put together isn't particularly good. The art is nice and that's about it.

Ah I see so long as you are popular before, no matter how low quality your game is you can command a higher price.
>inb4 anon claims these games are of top tier quality and it's not about building a playerbase who will pay higher and higher prices just cause you're popular in the gamedev scene
>>
>>577596954
pricing is a shit-test that's backed by setting expectations which is backed by marketing.
quality certainly helps the expectations, but it has always been optional.
I agree BW is a $10 game, but Goose was also $20, so likely the price was insisted by their publisher.

I'm far from being the only loser here and I know this isn't the best place to ask but I also don't know of any better place.

I went in game dev a few years ago in hopes of making it a jobby, or get skills to get hired.
being a 1MA is inherently contradictory to being a wagie. Wide skills, medium level. you want high proficiency to get hired. even if I do get highly proficient, there are 50k laid off devs more skilled than me.
Making games is a gamble. I can make all sorts of games "like other popular things", I don't know if they'll be popular until 1-2 months into a prototype.
I can also make a deeper game, and that's my deepest desire, but I'm miserable stuck living in this shithole country in poverty.
>get a job
I likely will next month, but a mcdonalds type job will make me more miserable than attempting to solodev, so if I can't get something decent I won't.

I can continue solodev in trash conditions, not being able to realize my potential. I can also try to get high skills in a single profession, likely technical art. I tried becoming a webmonkey before and couldn't do it. If it bores me I don't think I can study it.
I don't know what to do.

>>
>>577614527
AI absolutely let's people make more complex games than they otherwise would have. It speeds things up dramatically. But it depends on the dev. Actually probably most devs struggle to use AI. They are fags who are like "wah wah it takes the fun out of things." "Wah wah I have to check the code so it's probably faster for me to do things myself, except I'm neurodivergent and can't focus with meth." I have a theory that if you're more of a sensor on the Myers Briggs test, the less you like AI. Not that you totally dismiss it, but the more of a sensor that you are, you less open you are to AI. The more intuitive you are, the more you like AI. And then the other issue is low caliber devs from a moral standpoint can't handle the power, and give over thinking to the AI 100%, and that'll only lead to hell and stagnation. But if you're intuitive and a person of lordly caliber, it makes you much more effective.

it's kinda insane how AI can handle things that normally only a fraction of devs would have had access to like the terrain deformation in those games

there's infinite ways to solve the problem but if you're video genning then comfyui has some background removal options and I'm sure there's nodes there to make sprite sheets as well

I haven't done video to sprite animation per se but I have done 3d to sprite animation in unity and it can do it just fine so any modern engine should be capable of it though I suppose background removal you might wanna handle elsewhere

there's tools like corridorkey to solve background removal

in the first place you should use an image that has white, black or green background though there's always a chance the video gen will fuck it up

For me the power ranks are:
Good vs Good > Good vs Evil > Anything with grey morality flawed characters
Characters who fundamentally are good people with reasonable understanding of morality who still come into conflict due to conflicting interests and beliefs is top tier. I clean good guy vs villain can be fun too if a bit simple usually. Personally I've grown tired of all fencing sitting grey characters. Its always some variant of "check this guy out, he tries to go the right thing sometimes, but is also a degenerate retarded and cant help but have incest and try and kill children sometimes". Give me character with an internally consistent moral frame work and who can actually uphold themselves to it.

This is why you gotta be ready to launch after your next fest demo. We're gonna see more and more of these sorts of demo snipes for small games.

I'm leaning towards a timeline like
>register for next fest
>reveal your steam page
>have demo up for 2-4 weeks before next fest and patch it for bugs
>participate in next fest
>finish game in 1-2 months and release
as that would leave no time for snipers to steal your shit. Only applies to small games that are quickly cloneable.

Honestly I think Rock Bottom trailer showing the late game chaos in the first few seconds might have made the difference. Of course releasing a couple days before is big too.

>>577622647
That is a good point. Diggin complaints in reviews seem to be centered around repetitive and grindy gameplay with poor progression pacing. Rock Bottom has some similar negative reviews but also a bunch complaining about AI art. Another thing to note is that Rock Bottom has 1 hour longer average playtime.

It's almost like game devs try to teach each other to make games I don't want to play. Yeah I understand scope has to be managable, but that's not my problem as a consumer. I don't play your games just to not hurt your feelings.
>>
>>577640921
If you're a dev you understand why this trend exists. Making games with any bit of scope takes a long time. It's a bit more manageable when you minimize other parts like art by going roguelike and such but it's still a fuckton of work to make a game with content and scope.

It doesn't help that gamers are rewarding devs for making these short consumable games in the form of friend slop, horror slop, incremental slop and idle slop. If releasing a game is a gamble it makes more sense to gamble on shorter games that you can dev quicker.
>>
>>577640921
>teach each other to make games I don't want to play
big plague in indie dev is hacks desperate for success, who succumb to slop. Subsequently, all their opinions start revolving around "Slop Success", which turns their "advice" into essentially telling other devs to lower their quality so they can ship faster.
>>
>>577640921
who cares about what games (You) want to play? there's all kinds of gamers out there and they like everything from nubby's number factory to baldur's gate 3. every developer has constraints and they're supposed to work within those constraints or never release a game.
>>
>>577641486
I almost tried to just make a slop game for the hell of it but I couldn't bring myself to do it. It just feels so soulless. This is why I'm ngmi.
>>
>>577641986
all the games i loved were MASSIVE hits. making a good game doesn't mean making a niche game.
>>
>>577641986
>who cares about what games (You) want to play?
same trash mindset of the AAA
>>
>>577640921
this is why if you have a big scope for your game you have to make a quality demo first and then ask for financiation. if you can't make a good demo then you can't make a complete game therefore you should just quit
>>
>>577642139
I know the feeling. Just gotta grind out the longer project and put enough soul into it that it's worth it.

>>577642221
There's a lot of great niche games but there's also a lot of "niche" games that are "niche" because they aren't so great. For the former I love that they have room to exist in the current market. Mech Engineer for example. Not a lot of people are into that but for those who are it's great that it exists and Steam allowed it to find an audience.
>>
>>577642384
i don't think current devs have any concept of kickstarter, early access, investors etc. anymore - they think you have to make the whole thing alone from scratch and it has to be a complete game. it's the exact people who complained about early access who make games now. they didn't understand that early access was necessary. they think a game should be made with 0 budget and 200 hour work weeks.

the cargo cult problem of modern society is growing, yet still nobody mentions cargo culting. this problem gets worse every year. people who have no idea how something works are trying to make the same things.

and ofc if you have this shit approach to gamedev you can only make sloppy scoped incremental shit.
>>
95% of indie devs abuse early access, which is why it got the stigma.

EA is just poorman's Patreon.
You're promising your payers that you'll work on the game, when all you're doing is drip-feeding them with content over years of minimal activity.

Dwarf Fortress mastered this.
>>
>>577643121
there are still kind people with a shit ton of money out there. if they see that your game is real and that you can make it and have the resolve to do it, they will support you

Vindication after vindication. I told you guys your ideas will be stolen and behold idealet thieves are making off like....thieves kek.

I will stay a whodev and keep all my games secret, even from Steam itself. You never know if Steam/Valve themself, one of their wagies, or a friend of one of their wagies somehow gets access to your non-published game, see's the vid, pics, and description, and decides it's a huge successful idea in the making and thus copies it.

Nope, nope, nope! You can all keep chugging the kool-aid that nothing like this happens despite the surge in this happening, you will never gaslight me into showing my game early. Even the longer development timeline games are far too high risk to share because now you open up yourself to being targeted by AA, AAA, or indies with a lot of money that will just steal the idea. Sure the game took you 2 years to make with 1 more year to go. But an AA, AAA, or big indie company with 40 employees could copy, make better, and release that game quicker than you going from year 2 to year 3.
>>
>>577618997
i would never feel bad for an incrementalshit game being stolen (most of them are)
>>
>>577636989
I don't need to be in direct competition with Erenshor. It also has a very sloppy asset store vibe to its visuals which means there's an opportunity to make something that looks better. Overall I think this is going to be one of those long lasting subgenres. People are nostalgic about old school MMORPGs but most of those people also do not have the time anymore to play a real MMORPG like that. These offline games with MMO vibes slid into that space but they're all these sort of 7/10 games that sell because there's not much else like them. There's also the co-op dungeon crawl type games that are trying to appeal to the instance running crowd. Not much competition there either and the games that exist aren't so good.

Another thing to consider is that they're quite suitable for EA releases which is nice. You get to build the MVP and expand upon it in both width and length assuming you are able to build an audience that sustains your development.
>>
>>577642679
you bring up cargo culting in every thread though
>>
>>577645850
this
incremental games are textbook definition digital goyslop
they're easy to make and their only purpose is to release cheap bursts of dopamine

if you make them, you recognize that your craft is merely a ploy to make money.

that reminds me

announcing too early is a suicide now especially when you got a solid appeal high concept game
you are opening yourself to copycats stealing your idea and making it to market before you
>>
>>577645648
Noun Who Verb's isn't an actual game idea, it's just a very generic concept that anyone can turn into anything.
Actual ideas aren't easy to clone so they rarely get taken.

There's that but it can also bring you confidence to keep going. Maybe it depends on what kind of person you are and why you got into dev.
>>
>>577648237
Even so PVKK may have shown up elsewhere first, have a steam page up first doesn't mean you made your game first. After all can you really trust Steam or one of their associates won't steal your unpublished idea?
>>
>>577649675
what when you run out of money?
>>
>>577650274
sure but both games look pretty high effort for small teams.
if it were just a matter of having an idea it would work with papers please graphics.
>>
>>577650889
You could make a 2d game with the idea but it doesn't have nearly as much appeal as the first person 3d simulator game that these are going for.
>>
>>577650186
I "comfydev" strictly for the thrill of making games and it has just resulted in me having like five unfinished projects. Maybe someday one will be finished.

No idea if I would be faster or more focused if I had to work, then go home and game dev, just commenting that I don't think having money or not makes a huge difference unless you are stressing for basic needs that get in the way of game dev.
>>
>>577651028
you could make it first person 3D but like Flyknight or something like that. you could also make it without that world building flavor. the appeal is in synthesis of the mechanics and polished presentation, and that's not something as simple as stealing the idea.
now if meccha chameleon posted the game long before releasing it and someone stole the idea, that would be different. if your game's strength is its idea then keep it hidden, keep it safe. but if you're making something that caters to a fantasy rather than offer innovative mechanics, you're probably doing yourself a disservice by not building an audience

The books usually have source code on GitHub or whatever you can copy and paste if you want.

>>577601921
3D is faster if you're trying to animate. Unless you're doing one of those weird indie games where basically nothing is animated.
