I've almost come up with a good AI system for my shooter. Basically the AI will imagine itself at a set of pathable points and pick the one it likes best. I've already coded the heuristic for rating spots, but I need to refine how picks the points to test. I'm thinking something like a poisson distribution on a heatmap of nearby pathable points, with the search radius expanding the less happy it is with its current position and the longer it's been there. But multiple Z levels (e.g. an overhang) make that kind of tricky to compute. I have the code for 2D heatmap distributions from another project but would need to figure out how to apply it.
