It was first and foremost the 3 house leaders already drawing people in and how you as a player interact around them. This element is lacking because Eshmel just works in a very different way to how Byleth works for the player as their anchor point in the world again I think indicates a lack of understanding and then capitalizing and actually surpassing what 3 houses did. You wouldn't have a slow trickle down of side characters worked into a somewhat simplistic and grindy recruitment system whose main goals seems to control when you get who. You would have IS make sure you have a team of at least 6-7 people early you fall in love with as fast as possible
