Ive been programming since my early teens but I didn't go to college and I didn't look for a job and instead I was doing freelance from project to project and it was going well but now I'm fucked. so I thought hey gamedev is something where I'll have a competitive advantage but now even most of that is gone because anybody can buy a template and have an AI work on it for youI failed at life because I didn't go to college and didn't work 9-5 so instead of seeking any kind of stability I'm trying an even longer shotam I in the right place?

somehow commitment isn't the hard thing. the hard thing is finding something to commit to.if i'd compare it to dating, you'd need at least some basics to be in place. somewhat same age, not so unattractive that you have to lie to her about her looks, she being single and not married already, living in the same town or close.but what is the "game idea" equivalent of that?the thing is, i want to shift from "finding the best thing" to "making the thing i commit to work, at all cost".maybe i should just pick the game i played the most in the last 2 years and go with that genre?

>>583263949its time to grow up. in the 70s if rent got high and jobs weren't available, people moved to a new town and found a new job. or they got the job that was available.young people nowadays have all those expectations "i live here so rent should be affordable", "i'm owed a living wage", "i'm owed cheap rent", "i'm owned a job".you can also think like that, but you'll suffer all your life and always be a victim.get the job you can get, no matter what it is. if possible something where you enjoy being a customer, because that means they have good management and you'll have nothing to worry about other than getting your work hours done.if that feels like giving up to you, then think long-term. you can still try to slowly grind towards success in the next 10-15 years. just not fulltime (yet).
>>583262195So....if I go to that college I will meet attractive femoids who will date me?>>583262221Devs paid themselves a salary supposedly an average of 80k a piece. So techinically it was them giving their own money to themselves. Pretend that Eric makes a new game, a very low quality game over 1 year and then proceeds to say he spent $50m making it>the only cost was paying myself a salary of $50m to make itLel. i understand that all hyped games are more about the idea and the hype. but i personally enjoy early access games that got 8+ years of development love. like 7daystodie, kenshi, terraria, factorio etc.maybe i should just go that route too. it's not optimized, i can't depend on it making money, but it'll be "my cup of tea" kinda.and i guess there's always an option to join early access after 2-3 years of development.

Saturday is fucking wasted. Spent the entire day experimenting with visual effects and the best I got is some rainbow vomit:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxSn2In0BwYSo yeah, making an "arcade top-down shooter, but with random upgrades" was a shitty idea. Because random upgrades are killing the "arcade" part of gameplay and as result I got the worst survivors-like ever created. It's time to remake this shit. Again.

>>583265501Many such cases. Game design is the hardest part of gamedev. If you intend to sell on Steam, don't make "arcade" games. Steam is for PC games.
gamedev is not for me, yet i always wanted to bruteforce it cause i have no other idea what to do with my programming skills. i actually enjoy game programming, but i can't do art, i don't have a budget and i can't collaborate with gay furries. and i tried using assets, but it's such a hustle and often not practical, that i also gave up on that.maybe the way forward is to just accept the void i'm in where i have no idea/goals. or maybe accept that that's just life, unless you have luck and good opportunities in front of you.or i need a ground-breaking change of mind that allows me to mentally accept a 10 year long development process, but right now i'm not in the mental state for that long of a project.

AI is helping with the logic, design and coding, also telling it to keep it easily editable so lets say on the fly i want to switch out something I can just do it in game. It can make really fucking useful editor tools for godot. I have not opened godot itself other than creating the game project. Since that, ive been talking to codex and it been creating me .cmd files to test certain things and areas and such. Even if I cant make a cent with it, I am having fun and can convey my tragic teenage romance story I always wanted to make.

And the jam theme is.... https://youtu.be/kxVWGc8yo3A Anyways, that'll be the theme you work with for your game this week! Remember, you also have to work in the other requirements that you voted on this week which, as a refresher, are >Settings not fit for horror >A sacrifice mechanic >Riddles What any of that means and how it works in with the jam is left to your interpretation! Does sacrifice mechanics mean Aztec style sacrifices or does it mean that you're sacrificing something to gain something else? Or does it literally mean you sacrifice a car mechanic? All things I challenge you to have fun working with. And a couple other notes. Games do not have to strictly be made browser playable, we are able to download them as we have a windows OS to work with. A reminder that we will be reviewing jam submissions on a live stream next Sunday October 11th at 12pm EST. So make sure you tune in! Your jam submissions are due in OCTOBER 10TH AT 1AM EST! This'll allow for a day and a half of community ranking before us judges come in and give our score. Remember, to win you need the highest combined score from the community and the judges! And a disclaimer, while we cannot check for AI usage in code, we will be knocking down points for obvious AI art. Go out and have fun, and we'll check in throughout the week.

Which one has more potential for revenue: Steam or Play Store? Steam supports game demos, while the Play Store has a trial mechanic (people can try paid games for one hour of gameplay). I imagine if the mobile market is easier or harder to enter compared to desktop.
>>583265956Yeah, I know. Ideally I should make some simple incremental/autobattler/idle game which plays itself - those are easy to make and they are very popular on steam. But, man, I hate these games so fucking much! I actually tried to make some primitive autobattler, but ragequitted it after two days.
