I feel like a lot of utsuge is way more extreme than Hellraiser.

Not Hellraiser, but Clive Barker wrote a fantasy novel called Imajica that people freaked out over because of a loli rape/dismemberment scene. I can't get over how tame that scene was comparably after being desensitized by a hundred VNs that were worse. Actual-novels just seem not do shock value as well as VNs for me.
