Hello anons. Some of you might remember the game, it was posted a long time ago on this board. How fast the time has passed. Engine is rewritten and stable now, I'll spare you the autism.

Looking for play-testers and community members. The latest version(0.04w4) has gotten some in-game hints on recipes.
- Did you get stuck? If yes, where?
- When did you quit, and why?
- What did you expect to happen, but didn't?
- FPS and hardware?

Website is: https://justablockgame.com/
Download(grab alpha 0.04w4): https://justablockgame.com/downloads
Windows only, SmartScreen is going to complain because the exe isn't signed. Fuck microslop.

Also I wanna add multiplayer, would you play it co-op with 2-4 friends?

Changed some colours and trying to add a combat type for events. Reworking the event windows took me like 6 hours ahaha. Pure pain.
Not sure if i like the colours, but some feedback last time was that people assumed youre just some evil guy and that its too unreadable. I think the readability is better now, but i sort of went for a colour palette were you swapped from a evil guy to somebody that gets pegged by some hrtwink. Not that i mind it, but maybe others will.

Okay this isn't too bad at all, these are dead people mind you, I haven't lored it up completely yet but think 'dead in space for a few years'.

I've also started figuring out how to allowing the level generator to 'create stories' like this of how people might've died, it's not really important, this is just fluff, though you'll be able to, say, cut off the hand of the captain or something in case you need it to open a security door etc, and I still need to design how to best integrate all these corpes into the creep; what the fuck happens to them once they get eaten?

According to some guy that went through new releases for a while, about half of steam’s releases are now fully or nearly fully AI, in the sense of having very obviously chatgpt art and store page text and stuff.
Since nobody buys these, there are technically far less games being released than a few years ago, back to Covid levels. They are far more easily detected and less bought than asset flips.
So life is good.

They're just models of dead people (at first they're 'standing up' just to present them and for me to look at the models, they're not going to be found standing up), and the others are all just 'how they died', one of them died from falling, the other from being stuck under a shelf/storage unit/machinery whatever, and then others died of... who knows, hunger, maybe they killed themselves, etc etc because they could hear the aliens outside the door and there was no way out.

I've been testing out moving from static planets to an actual solar system. It makes things much more complex, which I think is actually a good thing, in the send it gives more room for progression and player learning. Performance wise, it's starting to kick my ass. I need to up my math game.

Pic related is getting resources back from a tidally locked moon.

I'm also adding a system to make cannons only fire during valid transfer windows between planets, but it's still very much a work in progress.

Alright, all the invites should be sent by now for this year's meet-up. If you didn't get a notification, there is either no clear way to contact you or your game just isn't complete or compelling enough.
As always accomodations will be provided for the week, but if you have financial difficulty with travel costs, there are instructions in the email for what assistance is available.

Betz and Joshua have been banned from the meetup. Fygoon was contacted but declined. Looking forward to seeing you all again and some of you for the first time :)

Pretty much all my favorite games are all made by mentally ill retards, so, yes, I agree with this part, but that's not what I'm referring to, it's not the quality or potential that is the problem, but the 'how do you reach them' that is, since that's what your question boils down to.

I don't think anyone here will respect you until you prove yourself, no matter what, though.

This at its core, is a creative problem
If we concede that more games are coming out and the differential will likely be the awareness, then that becomes VERY important. The other thing is this is also a lot easier than you guys think because if the average game developer doesnt like marketing, then getting decent at it has a huge ROI

another huge tip id give you all is you can afford to be not as standard in your marketing approach. you can have esoteric landing pages, you can have more avant garde trailers when youre a solo dev
>I don't think anyone here will respect you until you prove yourself, no matter what, though.

>>584363218
I think the questions is more along the lines of: what does your game need.
Which engine would YOU use, I think claude is going to be just as capable of using godot than unity: but godot is faster.
Godot allows claude or gpt to work on it directly at breakneck speed, no need to start a dozen editors or anything, it just edits the files and let's fucking go.

So if your game is simple enough and you want to iterate fast: godot
If you care more about quality and less spending 20 hours a day prompting new shit every 5-20minutes: unity

That's been my experience at least.

Shadowdropping your game can also get your game stolen. You need to make your game and
1. hope noone else wants to spend the time you did
2. hope that person has less taste and love for it than you do
And do all that while still marketing, or you will have no wishlist/hype and your game will be forgotten.

If you didn't spend time on it, and didn't have taste and love, you were never gonna make it anyway.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

you have a couple of options then
>document this process on social media and build a following so you win the optics of it all

fuck that is a weird issue idk bros

my guess is the solution will be some sort of new awareness channel, new website or maybe Steam does it

>people test it and decide if they wanna wishlist to follow the dev journey

but it basically doesnt prevent someone from taking that idea

it's you who is the retard. You're working on the premise that it costs, but the cost is *extremely* low, which is why it's so rampant. (I've done it to roughly 3 games here in the past week).

>>
>>584365020
Would cost way too much money right now, maybe in a few years (but it'd still be a big drain of resources).
I could see this being real if, say, you proposed a sub 'for 20$ a month you get to play with bots' but I don't think that'd be a smart plan long term. But it'll get cheaper.

Maybe local model-powered bots is more likely.
>>
>>584365020
depends, currently you could put an llm into the game to control the human but it looks retarded, see portal llm gameplay

Hey cris just wondering why you didn't reply to me on /pol/.
Because of this I've decided to start working on my game on aggy again.
Now that my life and career (I dropped out of my PhD over AI) is it's over now'd I've decided to hard focus on my only true talent: being schizophrenic and able to control vast amounts of schizo energy to the level of near divinity.
I have to restart my entire life, I'm waging as a plumber apprentice now literally getting real human shit on me, so I might as well restart my /agdg/ arc.
Oh don't worry as revenge against AI I've been spending an excessive amount of time overly formalizing AI in terse mathematical terms like endomorphisms that CStards can't understand and I intend to publish everything.
>inb4 why quit you phd dr. schizok?
it's ok I left with a masters.
>inb4 what is your game post 'gress

That's always been possible, engineers just haven't done it for some reason. I guess because making super strong unbeatable opponents is more exciting? I don't really know. But you have always been able to train in various directions instead of just "beat everyone always".
If I were someone like the Crusader Kings or Civ guys I would have been doing this with telemetry for a long-ass time. Use clustering to get 'kinds' of players, now you have different sorts of personalities involved at a much finer level than "Easy, Medium, Difficult"
>>
>>584365247
They can easily filter by whichever games are getting attention, why are you assuming it's going to happen to 30000 games? It's already hard enough to make a good game, and if you do you now also have to worry about it just getting taken.

Players love predictability in games with singleplayer focus. If they wanted to fight human-like entities, they'd play multiplayer.

I don't completely disagree with your assessment (except rimtalk, rimtalk is pretty trash and not deep enough, way too 'cosmetic'), but the main issue with multiplayer now is that... are you sure you're playing against a player?
And even if it's a player; can you be for certain he's not cheating?

It's less of a problem depending on the genre of game, ofc, but now cheating is going to explode in popularity, maybe AI from the studio will be able to keep up with it but I don't see that happening.
So, we're kind of at a dead end when it comes to competitive gaming, and that I think is what will lead to people wanting to play against 'seemingly real people' but knowing they're not actually cheating.

Not only that, but it kind of depends on the game, say you're playing borderlands, wouldn't it be more fun if the enemy was capable of coming up with new lines on the fly? What if it's based on what you're wearing or what gun you're using, or even if it's an enemy you saw before then maybe it's going to be using the nemesis system™ etc

I don't know, it's going to get interesting nonetheless.

the problem is, they are not
most people do not possess the level of passion and care along with the level of intellect required to spend the right level of attention on the right things, and make a good product
I have done many portfolio studies of awful (subjective) game design and potential suggested solutions and problems of either implementing or not implementing them
and like people, the majority of products are absolutely lacking in most areas of design philosophies
the most common thing is conflicting systems
the reality is that gpt is not currently able to do those things
it is possible to improve to that point, but it's not this year, or next year

>except rimtalk, rimtalk is pretty trash and not deep enough, way too 'cosmetic'
Conceptually, it's sound.
In a world with infinite processing power, you'd expect Tynan to implement something like that himself.

Well, that's the idea of RimTalk, generating dialogue based on deep context.

>I think is what will lead to people wanting to play against 'seemingly real people' but knowing they're not actually cheating.
I don't really know about that. I think the idea that you're playing against a neural network makes it feel pointless.
Right now, you could probably emulate an /agdg/ thread populated just with AI bots with persistent personalities, names, projects, goals, etc.
Would you prefer that over coming here and talking to real humans?

If you don't care about the social aspect aspect, we already have moderately convincing and very competent bots in multiplayer games where the AI does not have to cheat to compete with even good players, e.g. AoE 2 and Dota 2, yet barely anyone cares.

>rimtalk
My main gripe with rimtalk is that it's... not doing anything. It creates noise.
You can install a dozen different addons, which might or might not work with your version of the game to try to make it interact with the game more: but then what?
It's not bad, but the potential is nowhere near reached.
A good rimtalk would take control of the narrator on top of just adding a voice to your pawns, there needs to be a link there.

>generating dialogue based on deep context.
Yeah, but that's the point, in a game like borderlands, the pawn is something you shoot at and you don't care about him more than that, you just fuck him up -> next one. It's fine for a cosmetic addition here, it makes sense, but in rimworld, you're supposed to care for the little faggots, they're not just a number, you work with them, you give them life, you save them, this is important, which makes the 'cosmetic only' addition all the more jarring.

>I think the idea that you're playing against a neural network makes it feel pointless.
I don't see the difference with playing against a script in any other games. Yet most people enjoy that.

>Would you prefer that over coming here and talking to real humans?
What tells me you're not, already?
Why would that change anything, I don't know man, I don't have the same perception that you have, I do not care about whether I'm interacting with A or Y, it's kind of... the soul of 4chan. Why do you think we're anonymous?
Why should I care whether it's an AI I'm speaking to or a human?
As I said, I've had deeper and better arguments and conversations that had me actually thinking with fucking grok than I have had with some of the retards ITT; what does that mean?

>Why should I care whether it's an AI I'm speaking to or a human?
Between real Bokudev and AI Bokudev, you'd probably always be more invested in real Bokudev's journey because it does not necessitate a layer of playing pretend.
>As I said, I've had deeper and better arguments and conversations that had me actually thinking with fucking grok than I have had with some of the retards ITT;
'Quality' is the red herring in this discussion.
The reason people prefer talking to real people (or people they believe are real) is because they want to be invested in real things.
Talking to AI can be fun, and few can play pretend well enough to fool themselves that they're talking or playing against something that is genuinely invested in a project, conversation or game, but that's not the case for most people, nor do most people like that idea.
>people just don't care about these games because... who the fuck plays RTS games in 2026 lol
Dota 2 is still very popular and has even had a very famous match between OpenAI bots and pro players 8 years ago,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaBYhLttETw

It would be interesting to see concurrent NNs competing against world champions to see what near-perfect level play looks like, but I've never heard from players that they'd like to play against those bots themselves.

5K for $25K easy. Those people are devoted fans who would pay 50$ for a game. The free choice is just people who play a flash game, and will just move onto the next game.

1M for free

How are you gonna tell me I'm not gonna be able to make any money off the game's popularity? What's the point of the thought exercise. I can simply promise more content updates and people will throw money at you if your game is that popular, even if it's in the form of donations.

>this dev made a hugely popular game and made no money

I don't know.
Should I make a 6 months game or a 5 years game?

I don't know bro, I'm not saying this in a mean way, but my intuition screams at me that you're coping.
It's all cope. You say 'they're invested in real things', but you don't know that?
How can you really know that?
Maybe you're young or maybe you got very lucky and never had bad experiences, but, especially in the field (but this is just bias, it's not like I've ever worked in banking for example), there's a lot of bullshitters.
Mind you this was part of my job: interacting with bizdevs (aka the marketing-adjacent people that spend their time finding and making deals), and all of them are all bullshitters, to different extent, but that's just par for the course: you need to. The whole point is that you're selling a product after all; and what tells you this isn't the case in other parts of life?
I'm a big bullshitter too, not out of wanting to be an asshole but I realize that a lot of people love it when people sound interested in their shit, which means I get to have a better relation with that person.
Do you not do that with your gf/wife? That's also par for the course, methinks.

So I don't see it that way at all, I don't think of it that way, it's pretty hard to explain though, but I guess I quantify 'quality' of a discussion based on what I can get from it.
Why should I care about anything else?
What else is there to care about..?
If I'm speaking to a human, and we have a quality discussion because we both learn from it, this is great, this is absolutely fantastic. If it's an AI, and I can get something from it: why would I see it differently? Great. Fantastic.

>DOTA 2
Well this doesn't fit the discussion at all because; of course a bot will destroy you in an evenly matched game, how could they not? What's the point of an aimbot?
You don't even need LLMs for this, after all.

That's the wrong answer.
And all the information you need is embedded in the question. 5k players paid $25k for it. That's what the game is worth, otherwise it'd have earned more. So if you make a sequel, chances are it will attract fewer players, because sequels usually do. So you didn't get the $25k and if you want to earn money from a second game, it's likely to earn the same amount of money or less for the same effort.

But anyways, about the dota thing:
It's not about difficulty. It's never been about difficulty.
If you make a game where the hardest difficulty becomes impossible to beat: it's shit.
Nobody will like it.

That's the point, and that's why fromsoftware games rose above all so quickly: it's about the experience.
It's not the difficulty, it's not 'just' the difficulty, it's all about 'how do I balance it to make it challenging to the player without completely destroying his anus', it's not so simple to achieve.

Now, there are games where this works and some where it doesn't; but surely you've felt it, we all did; some games' hard mode is too hard, and some games' normal mode is not hard enough. What then?
What if the AI could figure this out and adjust the difficulty on the fly?
The rimworld's narrator is trying to do that with algorithms, 'oh the player just got fucked over by my last raid, I guess i'll chill for a second', but this is obviously limited by being code and algorithms. What if the code was written on the fly?

What if you played MGS5 and then the patrols would adjust based on your pathing patterns?
What if you played skyrim and the people could react to you being a werewolf AND the fact that you tried to kill them last week, rather than only one or the other?
What about strategy games where you can insult a lord and start a war over it, and then have actual, real 'life-like' diplomacy going on rather than.... number on screen goes up and the bar goes green.
I mean, the potential here is literally 'infinite'.
This is where I see the future and why Ai is going to be so good for it.

nobody seems to care that AI pajeets straight from the call center ghetto are stealing popular twitter indie games and just cloning them before the original devs can finish them, and realeaing the game on steam and mobile an html portals because making 5 usd per month is enough to be rich in mumbay.

Aren't stealth games mainly about memorizing and predicting AI pathing?
Human-level pathing adjustments would be painful for the average gamer.

The only game I'm going to do this to is Bokube, but it'll be free, just because it will be funny. Worth the token cost.
