A not-Lae'zel is forgettable if her alien culture is a mere veneer and gives you no reason to care. A not-Minthara is nothing more than eye candy if her dark elf nature is just a costume instead of her culture, her gender, her entire being. I love these characters, but I don't believe they were created by sheer luck or a mere stroke of brilliance. Much of the groundwork was already laid for the writers, essentially.
