Early game zones are PvP-protected but once you play for like 16 hours and get to lvl 20 you'll have to go to contested territory (getting ganked and dying doesn't make you lose anything it's just time consuming), and at around lvl 30 you'll have to actively do quests that the opposite faction also have to do and active world pvp usually starts there
