I remember early on that an anon proposed the post CM race should be those with platinum titles only. That got shut down real fast. Even without the requirement, most participants are usually plat-worthy on average. The recent Pisces stakes where there was 14 end closers was pretty hilarious. Gave the fronts an easy path to victory. People really want backlines and oshis and whatever to win but the fronts see that as an easy ticket to victory. The stakes are inherently imbalanced

I was thinking along the lines of some kind of mix between a colony and tycoon sim. I suppose the core gameplay loop would be generating income from student enrolments and meeting performance targets and then spending money to build/upgrade facilities and infrastructure. The students' daily routines would be fun to watch, with them arriving in the morning, following schedules & interacting with each other and the facilities you've built, then leaving at the end of the day. I was thinking that the map would be a multiple z-layer grid with a zoning and freeform placement system akin to most tycoon games. The students would have basic info and stats which increase based on available equipment/facilities and efficiency of traversing the academy.
