The general idea has a small bit off logic since Megas empower the Pokemon that get them, regionals are just off colored cousins that often ends up stronger than the original due to power creep. And there's a Grand Canyon of popularity between the starters who got megas and the ones who got regionals. But even then, then the idea that regionals are a bad thing doesn't really work when icons like Meowth got one. And as I mentioned Slowbro got both.
